DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Shots from a Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney cutscene, showing Phoenix and Maya on a flight to London, animated by Bones (who you might remember is also animating Grasshopper Manufacture’s shooter in Guild01).

No new details about the game for the moment, but it’s still slated to release in Japan for 3DS this year.

Layton and the Last Specter site opens, with demos and more stuff →

I’ve been looking around the Professor Layton and the Last Specter site, trying to find the hidden wallpapers, videos, and other content, but all I’ve found are a couple of streaming songs that I can’t really put in this post.

Anyway, even if I did get all the hidden junk, the real attraction to the site are the demo puzzles, which I can’t embed here. So, uh, go ahead and click over and stuff.

I think the wallpapers and trailers at GoNintendo were pulled from the scavenger-hunt content on the website. Above, a trailer in which Emmy (“Remi” in Japan) is a dangerously terrible driver.

Explore Little London in Professor Layton & the Last Specter. Well, unless you’re in the U.K. (or continental Europe) — in that case, you will have to settle for exploring the real London, which lacks the Mother 3-esque spritework you see in this short trailer.

That’s because Nintendo elected not to include the London Life 100-hour RPG in the game for Europe, as it would have “significantly delayed” the title’s launch there. Importers and everyone in North America, however, will be able to play it in their copies of Professor Layton & the Last Specter, and it will even be unlocked at the start.

New Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney TGS trailer. The new 3D models for Phoenix and Layton are quite nice in motion! The whole game, unsurprisingly, looks hot.

An English-language press release for this 3DS game was found at TGS last week, implying a Western release is in the works. It seems obvious that Level-5 would consider it, what with this being the top-voted entry in the publisher’s poll for which games its fans are most excited about (Ni no Kuni for PS3, the wrong version, was the survey’s second most popular item and will come to the U.S. in early 2012).

First Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney screenshots. The new characters accompanying the professor, Phoenix, Luke, and Maya, are Mahoney, the blond girl accused of being a witch; and Jeeken, the ginger prosecutor/knight.

This Level-5/Capcom 3DS collab, which has only been announced for Japan so far, introduces a “Mob Judgment” system in which ”Phoenix goes up against a crowd of witnesses” and “witnesses may talk amongst themselves during a cross-examination”.

Professor Layton & the Last Specter releases October 17, includes London Life RPG

Though we feared Nintendo of America would cut this extra mode to save on localization costs, it turns out Professor Layton and the Last Specter will include London Life, the Brownie Brown-developed, “100-hour” RPG with a visual style reminiscent of Mother 3 (Brownie Brown also co-developed that). Joy!

What’s more, as a “North American exclusive”, this bonus RPG is available at the start, and not an unlockable after you finish the game — I’m not sure if this means European gamers will need to complete Last Specter before playing London Life, or if they won’t receive it at all.

Oh well, Europe got Xenoblade, and will soon be playing The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower, so it’s not like that region is getting screwed by Nintendo.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva out in America on November 8 →

Viz Media has officially dated the North American DVD release of Level-5’s Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva film; it’ll be out November 8. Here’s the synopsis:

“Professor Layton, true English gentleman and the world’s greatest amateur super sleuth, embarks on his most daring adventure yet when he receives a letter from his old student, the famous opera diva Janice Quatlane. She is to perform at the legendary Crown Petone Opera House and invites him to attend as her special guest.

Meanwhile, a spate of disappearances hits London. Two young school girls are the latest victims, and the Professor suspects it’s related to the mysterious occurrences at the theatre. The Professor and his loyal assistant Luke travel to the Opera House to solve their toughest puzzle yet, the mystery of Eternal Life!”

This was announced on Level-5 IA’s website. Is the U.S. branch of Level-5 involved with this, or just announcing something having to do with one of the company’s properties? Maybe working on the licensing stuff for this DVD is the first project out of the Santa Monica office.

Professor Layton’s Luke and his future self comparing DS hardware, by Yuening. Future Luke is a dick. Even his 3DS looks kinda evil with those red camera eyes.

The best part is that little Luke is going to grow up, remember future Luke being a total dick, and then do the exact same thing to his younger self.

New packaging for Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle. Like Nintendogs + Cats, the Professor Layton 3DS release is getting a revamp for its box in Japan. The new sleeve adds a bigger top hat, the game’s supporting stars, and a lot more color to the cover.

I was curious to see what other boxes woud look like with the sleeve, but the only one that I could make work was the U.S. box for Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever edition. I think the puppy looks quite dapper here!

Professor Layton movie coming to U.S. →

Viz Media announced at Anime Expo that it’s picked up the American distribution rights to the Professor Layton animated movie, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.

The company didn’t disclose a date for the release, but if (like me) you haven’t been motivated enough to track down the Japanese or UK versions, you can probably stand to wait until whenever Viz gets around to releasing it. Not that I’m not excited to see it — a couple of hours of just hanging around in Layton’s lovely universe without being harangued about making change or drawing maps sounds like a nice change of pace.

E3 trailer for Professor Layton and the Last Specter. Yay, Nintendo is actually bringing the fourth game from this adventure/puzzle series to the States, instead of skipping it and just pushing out the fifth, 3DS Layton title.

There’s no word yet, though, on whether this will include Professor Layton’s London Life, the Brownie Brown-developed “100-hour RPG” you can unlock at the end of the game — I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo of America cut this to save on localization costs.
