“Solstice Speed Run”, a mash-up of Ghostface Killah’s “Run” and music from the NES’ Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos. God, that raucous, grimy beat is a perfect fit on Pretty Toney’s anthem for fleet-footed dealers.

“Run! If you sell drugs in the school zone
Run! If you getting chased with no shoes on
Run! Fuck that! Run! Cops got, guns!
They givin’ out life like by the ton
Run! If you ain’t do shit, you it
That next felony, nigga, is like three zip”

This is the second track on Safety Words’ 2009 mixtape full of Ghostface/NES remixes, productions combining “Criminology” with Golgo 13, “Triumph” with The Legend of Zelda, and “Charlie Brown” with those bangin’ thumps from Battletoads’ pause music.

There’s not nearly as many Raekwon vesrses on there as I’d like, but it’s probably the most solid chiptune/rap release I’ve ever heard.

Buy: Wu-Tang music for the children

2Pac and Suge Knight playing Sonic the Hedgehog. Though he never rapped about video games like Biggie or the Wu-Tang Clan (from what I can recall at least), 2Pac apparently did pick up a Genesis controller at some point in time.

Reader Rory Starks tells us they’re playing the “2P VS” split-screen mode in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. By the looks of his expression (and sweater), it appears Suge is losing.

Also, is 2Pac wearing two gold watches? BALLIN’.

Buy: Some 2Pac/Makaveli music

Ryu vs. Wu-Tang Killa Bees. Why isn’t there a Wu fighting game (one that isn’t Shaolin Style, that is)?

Yes, 15 seconds in, this video isn’t funny anymore, but I’ll find any excuse to bring up the Clan on here. Also, it gives me a chance to post this Wu-Tang joke I saw TheSimplicity tweet recently:

Q: How many Wu-Tang members does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Just one. Their solo efforts are always quite competent.

Buy: Lots of Wu-Tang stuff to enrich your life

“Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis” by Mustafa Maluka.

I don’t usually advocate using that many typefaces right next to each other, but this photo is tight as hell. No doubt, the SN Programmable Joystick was ruuuuuude!

What GTA: Chinatown Wars needs more of

… is science cocaine rap.

The more I think about Chinatown Wars’ instrumental-heavy soundtrack, the more it seems like a missed opportunity to introduce young gamers to corrupting, age-inappropriate cocaine rap.

Judging by the above trailer, Liberty City’s handheld counterpart is packed to the gills with llelo. With all the coke exchanging hands, it’s criminal to not have a few tracks on there from Clipse, a group popular for rapping solely about pushing weight, once absurdly bragging that they had “more white in the hood than the KKK.”

So, in the spirit of creating inane lists of random crap that no one care about, I’ve written up the “Top 5 Rap Songs About Cocaine/Crack That Should Be In Chinatown Wars But Won’t Be Because The Soundtrack Will Be Butt”:

  1. “Grindin’” by Clipse
  2. “10 Crack Commandments” by Notorious B.I.G.
  3. “Ghetto Dope” by Master P
  4. “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” by Melle Mel
  5. “Keys Open Doors” by Clipse

You call it abhorrent, irresponsible music; I call it a summer mix.

“8-bit Hip Hop Medley” by Jesse “Tugboat” Novak.

Some of these wouldn’t seem out of place in an NES game! If you don’t recognize them all, here’s the full list of rap song excerpts re-imagined as chiptune tracks:

  • “Dirt Off Your Shoulders” by Jay-Z
  • “What You Know” by T.I
  • “Ridin’” by Chamillionaire
  • “What’s Ya Fantasy” by Ludacris
  • “Neva Scared” by Bonecrusher
  • “Overnight Celebrity” by Kanye
  • “Move Bitch” by Ludacris
  • “Get Low” by Lil’ Jon
  • “Gold Digger” by Kanye

So long as we’re talking about rap, here’s another sort of remix, combining Sesame Street duo Ernie and Bert with Brooklyn roughnecks M.O.P., with the two muppets performing the latter’s 2000 hood-banger “Ante Up”:

Studies show late rapper Biggie Smalls ‘couldn’t picture’ owning Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis consoles →

For all its corny posts, The Minus World occasionally puts up hilarious 90s pop culture referencing gems like this:

“A recent scientific study has determined that imagining the possibility of potentially possessing the once cutting edge 16 bit video game systems was all a dream for departed lyricist Christopher Wallace, known to fans as the Notorious B.I.G.

Audio recordings from 1994 were recently procured and examined to reveal that the consoles were simply not optional purchases at the time of his lowest economic stature.”

And if you don’t know, now you know.
