DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!
“I’m constantly amazed that people view markets as if they’re zero sum. We ain’t living in Highlander, nigga; there can be more than one.”

Real talk on whether iPhone 5 will “officially kill off” the Nintendo 3DS, brought to you by Damo Suzuki — the Tiny Cartridge commenter, not the singer of the same name.

In case you missed it Saturday, this is a response to this troll-bait article by SlashGear’s Don Reisinger, whose previous doomsaying articles include the following:

You don’t have to click any of those links or anything. You could spend your morning listening to this instead.

“We tend to focus more on what we have to offer. We certainly wouldn’t change our strategy or our approach based on what a competitor is doing.”

Nintendo exec Charlie Scibetta on whether the PS Vita’s low, loss-leading $249 price will provoke a markdown for the 3DS. He argues that so long as the company gives people enough reasons to buy the handheld — such as must-buy games — they’ll purchase a 3DS.

Namco Bandai’s Carlson Choi doesn’t want Nintendo to discount the 3DS either. He told Gamasutra yesterday, “The moment you cut the price of the item, the perceived value goes down. We’d love to have them retain the price because it keeps the premium status of that product and it allows us to bring premium games to that market.”

With where 3DS sales are at right now, I don’t believe Nintendo can sell the number of systems it wants to and expand the userbase enough to make publishers happy at its current price. Real talk, when the PS Vita hits with the same price point but significantly more powerful tech, I can’t see gamers standing for a $249 3DS.

“When the PSP and DS came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play on the iPod Touch, they don’t stack up anymore!”

Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller on the iPhone and iPod Touch’s superiority over the DS, PSP, and other past handheld gaming consoles.

Space Invaders: Infinity Gene is great and all, but real talk, the game Apple decided to show off shortly after that quote was a touch-controlled Halo clone… from Gameloft. Everyone knows that game is gonna be total Butt City, Population: a butt on your iPhone that you think is a game.

“Nintendo holds the publishing rights to Fatal Frame Wii, which was developed by Tecmo LTD. and Grasshopper Manufacture and released in Japan on July 31, 2008.

Nintendo of America has since then decided not to publish the title in North America – consequently, the title will not be released in this territory.

As the owner of the IP, Tecmo feels very unfortunate that the fans of the series in North America will not have a chance to play the game, but respects the final decision made by Nintendo of America.”

— Tecmo representative breaking the news that Fatal Frame IV will likely not release in North America.

I’m not the type who’s easily aggravated by decisions like these, but real talk, this is on some ol’ bullshit.

A bunch of iPhone junk

If it seems like there are fewer updates here than usual, it’s because I’m temporarily maintaining Finger Gaming, a somewhat suggestively named iPhone gaming blog from the Gamasutra network.

It’s a fun gig! Hopefully, Jeremy Parish won’t put my coverage to shame when 1UP launches its own iPhone site.

On a related note, I’ve read a couple articles lately arguing that the iPhone could eventually usurp the Nintendo DS’s handheld gaming throne through hardware superiority, a belief shared by Apple’s Greg Joswiak, who says that the iPhone’s significantly greater computer power and 3D graphic power will lead to better games than the DS’s.

I won’t say that the iPhone will never oust the DS — who knows, we might see a Castle Vidcons comic about the DS’s downfall in a few months — but I’ll contend that Apple won’t do it through better graphics and sound, or even through features like the iPhone’s multi-touch display and built-in accelerometer.

As the PSP learned, competing against the DS isn’t about besting the system’s hardware, which already seemed outdated before it even hit stores; taking on the DS means beating Animal Crossing, Brain Age, Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros., and of course, Pokemon.

What developer is going to do that on the iPhone? EA Mobile? THQ Wireless? Sega Mobile? Gameloft?

That’s not to say that there aren’t great games coming to or already on the App Store, or that smaller studios aren’t working on creative titles. I’m really looking forward to Dr. Awesome, Microsurgeon M.D., a Qix clone with a Trauma Center-esque premise.

To be honest, though, I’m more excited about the N-Gage’s upcoming titles — Yamake and Ghostwire both seem like they could be really fun.

[Disclaimer: Both N-Gage and Dr. Awesome developer ngmoco sponsor Gamasutra sites.]
