DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Gameplay footage for Divergent Shift, previously known as Reflection — that puzzle platformer developed by a team of students from University of Southern California, who managed to score a deal with Konami after taking home IGF Mobile’s Next Great Mobile Game award in 2009.

The game is out now on DSiWare for 800 Nintendo Points, but you’ll probably get more enjoyment out of this than other similarly priced titles on the platform like, say, Hell’s Kitchen VS. From what I played of the game a couple years ago (when it was just a homebrew title running on some students’ flashcarts), it seemed very fun!

Buy: Nintendo DSi XL (Burgundy and Bronze), Standard Nintendo DSi (White, Pink, Black and Blue)

Intrinsic Connection: Reflection & TC

Though Reflection didn’t release on DSiWare last November as planned, Konami and Intrinsic Games hope to release the puzzle-platformer soon. If you follow DSiWare news, you’ll remember this student-developed title enjoyed a bit of buzz last year after winning the ‘Next Great Mobile Game’ award at IGF Mobile next year.

In Reflection, you play two platformers simultaneously, with your character’s movements on the top screen mirrored on the bottom; you need to jump on platforms in one screen while avoiding obstacles in the other. It’s a concept similar to EnjoyUp’s Chronos Twins, which the developer says it wasn’t even aware of until one of the team members came across a write-up of their project:

Reflection releasing mid-November

Reflection, Konami’s Chronos Twins-esque puzzle-platformer, will hit North America’s DSiWare service in mid-November for 800 Nintendo Points.

The downloadable title was initially developed by a student team from University of Southern California, and attracted attention from major publishers earlier this year when it took home IGF Mobile’s Next Great Mobile Game award — the only DS game to win a category at the event.

I spent time with Reflection earlier this year, and even in its rough, unfinished state, I found the game’s concept (playing two platformers simultaneously while navigating obstacles on both screens) engaging. My only serious concern with the project was its unappealing art, but it appears as if Intrinsic Games addressed that issue without telling anyone (see above image).

DSiWare-bound: Reflection, Jake Hunter

The tail end of last week brought two interesting DSiWare announcements, one for the U.S. and the other for Japan.

Reflection received significant buzz last March not only because it was held up as IGF Mobile’s Next Great Mobile Game, but also because it was the only non-iPhone in the competition to take home an award.

This student-developed project is a puzzle platformer in which you control a young woman and her shadow simultaneously, taking objects and obstacles in both screens into account while you jump and slide your way through each stage. It’s slated to release this summer.

1UP’s Jeremy Parish called it “innovative” in his excellent preview, but based on the preview I played at GDC before Konami picked the title up for DSiWare, I’d describe it as a more thought-out Chronos Twins, without any enemies.

Due Wednesday, the Japanese title, Detective Saburo Jinguji: Whereabouts of the Camellia & Murder Mystery Notebook (loose translation), is yet another Jake Hunter story ported from a previously released mobile episode. You can download a PC demo for it from the official site.

I’m not sure what the story has to do with Alabama’s state flower, but you’ll be helping a high school boy find a missing online friend. This 500 point release comes with a cute comic adventure, The Composer Mystery Case.

As great as this all sounds, it fails to distract me from the fact that Nintendo still hasn’t announced Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! for Japan, even though it comes out in North America. Blast you, import system!

Buy: U.S. Matte Black and Blue DSi

Import: Japanese Nintendo DSi (White, Black, Pink, Lime Green, Metallic Blue)

Let’s look at IGF Mobile’s DS entries

This coming Independent Games Festival Mobile competition — an event designed to “promote innovation in portable games” — features five Nintendo DS entries, three of which I’ve never seen before.

Some look more promising than others, but I’ve gathered all of the independently developed DS titles here for you to preview. Who knows, one of them might win big like 5th Cell’s Drawn to Life did last year!

Mortley: A Stitch in Time (Yellow Monkey Studios)

A homebrew game from India! Is this a first? Yellow Monkey’s blog has more artwork for this adventure title.

“Its the yearly mad scientist reunion, or ‘In.S.A.N.E.’ awards! Award nominee Dr. Frank Einstein’s Doomsday device is a sure winner. But alas, its stolen. Dr. Frank stitches up various body parts to create Mortley, a grotesque rendition of a noir film detective who is literally falling apart!

Play as Mortley, meet fantastic characters, replace his various body parts with in-game items, travel back in time to recover the doomsday device and save the world in this quirky adventure game for the DS.”

Oozerts (Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab)

This group put together some really interesting prototype Wii games last years, several of which I remember seeing featured in some Brit gaming mag’s sidebar. You can see more screens and even a trailer on Gambit’s site.

“Oozerts, Tastipet Inc’s bestselling candy bar, is low on supply and they need help! In order to fulfill their shipment orders, you have been hired as an intern at the Candy Reclamation Plant. Your job is to dispense every monster’s favorite candy bar into awesome-looking candy wrappers. Your supervisor, Scoop McGoop, wants you to fill each candy mold with precisely the correct amount of Oozerts.

Developed especially for middle-school pre-algebra students, Oozerts will be a highly enjoyable and interactive experience for everyone, regardless of their age.”

Reflection (Team Reflection)

This sounds like Chronos Twin, except upside down! Team Reflection has a PC prototype available on its site.

“Run and jump across two screens at the same time! Reflection is a 2D puzzle platformer developed for the Nintendo DS at the University of Southern California. Follow the adventures of an inquisitive young girl who accidentally releases an evil being, and the no nonsense warden she must team up with to stop the destruction of the world.”

UZA The First Journey (Multiple: Option)

I’m really surprised that Multiple: Option submitted this instead of Game Trivia Catechism: The Secret of Mister X. I haven’t played UZA, but you should try out GTC if you get a chance! Download UZA here.

“Arcade action meets abstract art - UZA: The First Journey is an arcade action game similar to Robotron/Geometry Wars. Guide UZA through fifty rounds of frenetic action, where wave upon wave of relentless enemies test your speed, accuracy and coordination. Watch as your gameplay performance creates a piece of real-time abstract art. With only one life, how long can you survive, how much can you score, and what will your actions look like?”

Wardive (and-or)

Wardive reads the names of the hotspots in your immediate area and turns them into enemies which try to take over your wardrive-crystal. Try to fend them off with your touch pen, put your shields up, and don’t just stay in one spot. take Wardrive for a walk or on a ride through town. find out how may enemies hide in the area you are in or pass through.”

Here’s a link to download and watch video for Wardive. Developer and-or has another similar DS application called sniff_jazzbox, which “creates an audible city” by converting nearby wlan-waves into sound waves.

Good luck to all of the entrants!
