Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remade as a five-minute-long 2D shooter, by CalbiTheZebra. Not only is this more in my wheelhouse than the “real” game (which, in my limited experience playing it, was more like Call of What am I Supposed to Be Doing: Modern Some Dude Shot Me in the Back I Guess Oh Well), this Game Maker creation looks pretty nice on its own merits, completely independent from its purported basis.

The remake can be downloaded here

Kung Fu 2 trailer (retro remake, not Spartan X2).

KNPMaster completed and released his update of Irem’s beat’em-up, which adds new graphics, areas, mechanics, and more. I could do without the blinking combo text and fireballs, but the revamped look is very nice!

Is that boss in the wifebeater supposed to be rapper Rick Ross? It would be fantastic if he made his entrance with, “I’m the second boss that you’ve seen thus far.”

The Legend of Zelda: The Shards of Light.

This homebrew DS remake of the original Zelda NES game is early in development, but I hope BassAceGold eventually fixes some of the annoyances I found in this demo video — sword beams that sound like shots fired from a high-powered laser rifle, an overworld theme that sounds too epic, and over a dozen paragraphs of introductory text (skip to 02:10 for gameplay).

I wish this was more like Nintendo’s own Satellaview remake, BS Zelda no Densetsu, but then again, I have that same wish for every Zelda game.

The project has potential, though — I like the sprites so far, and having a map on the bottom screen is a good idea. The ability to hold four items at a time instead of two could be great, too (but it could also turn out terrible). BassAceGold also plans to drop in an achievement system that will “add little extra quests and unlockables” so that “the more achievements you unlock, the more extra goodies you can get in game.”

BassAceGold does not intend to release a demo before Shards of Light is completed. He has worked on the project since December 2007.

Remade in Ore →

Tired of seeing bite-sized versions of other games made with Made in Ore’s design tools? I hope not, because ITMedia has collected videos of thirty of them!

A few favorites: Bomberman, Spelunker, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, and my absolute favorite, which I meant to post before, this video featuring Beatmania, Monster Hunter, and Hatsune Miku games. I just think it’s so cool that it’s possible to make a (simple, five-second-long) rhythm game with this thing. I also think the super-annoying rendition of Beatmania’s “20, November” tune is hilarious.

You’ll need a Nicovideo account to view most of these videos. If you’ve yet to set one of those up, you totally should! This guide, written by NeoGAF’s sp0rsk, makes it easy.

Kung Fu Remaster →

Here’s a retro remake I missed: KNPMaster’s Kung Fu 2, a 16 bit (or maybe PC Engine-level 8 bit) update of Irem’s Kung Fu, featuring unnecessary blood and new special moves! It’s still all about kicking dudes before they walk into you and force you to shake them off.

It only took a few seconds of play to remind me of why I like Kung Fu, and why I really, really hate it.

The other bit Generations remakes are …

Rotohex and Cubello, according to the OFLC, Australia’s media ratings board. Presumably, those are reworked titles for Dialhex and Coloris.

JC and I both lose out, as we hoped that Nintendo’s new Art Style line would give us WiiWare remakes for DotStream and Soundvoyager, the two bit Generations GBA titles we were most interested in.

Rotohex and Cubello are both slated to appear on the Wii Shop Channel later this month. Who knows, maybe Nintendo has more bit Generations remakes planned — that’s the hope we’re holding onto.

An Orbital remake for WiiWare?!

Without any preceding announcements or media coverage, Nintendo put out what looks like a WiiWare remake for its stylish and immensely fun Orbital GBA game (gameplay video above), originally released in 2006 as part of the Japan-only bit Generations series.

Priced at only 600 Wii Points, Art Style: Orbient is cheap enough to try out even if you don’t know anything about the GBA release — it’s like Katamari Damacy, but in space and with an emphasis on gravity.

I wonder if there’s more to the remake than its new graphics? Hopefully, Orbient adds onto Orbital’s stellar soundtrack (puns always intended).

Additionally, two more Art Style titles are planned for WiiWare this October, likely bit Generations remakes as well. Hopefully, one of them will be Dotstream. That shiz was all the way live.

Bomberman Blast also debuted on WiiWare today, which is pretty cool, I guess, but it doesn’t have dinosaurs.
