DS and 3DS music coming to arcade rhythm game Maimai. Sega’s arcade game, which looks way too much like a washing machine, uses a circle-shaped touch screen, with icons around the circumference that you tap and slide.

An update adds three songs from Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s Treasure – the theme, “Show Time,” and “Encouraging Maria,” along with a song from the long-forgotten DS minigame collection The Rub Rabbits!

I totally want to play this game.

Rhythm Thief: The Musical, by Random Encounters. Check it out, it’s some Sega-sponsored marketing for Rhythm Thief, which should help build awareness that the company’s 3DS rhythm adventure comes out… wait, TODAY?

The video itself is super goofy, and very… musical-like.

Sega’s still saying a vague “early 2012” for the American release of Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s Treasure. In Europe, however, the game has a release date that you can actually circle on your calendar without a paint roller — April 5 (April 4 in Spain).

For the Euro release, Sega has partnered with Nintendo for distribution, a company who, I guess, is less timid about putting a specific timeline on things. Nintendo’s doing pretty good at co-distributing interesting 3DS stuff in Europe!

I enjoyed the time I’ve spent with the game so far, so I hope Sega gets around to specifying a North American release too.

Rhythm hanggliding in Rhythm Thief. Well, rhythm hanggliding plus rhythm… soccer ball shooting? Or something.

Sega put a few other videos of Rhythm Thief minigames up on its Japanese YouTube channel, You can see those below. The way the moves are called out kinda reminds me of Space Channel 5

There are also some commercials on the channel, but good luck making sense of them.

Rhythm Thief trailer. I unfortunately tend to forget about this game among upcoming releases, but I’m quite into it whenever I’m reminded! This story trailer shows a lot of style, some exciting jazzy music, and … what, that guy’s supposed to be Napoleon? Huh.
