25th anniversary smartphone wallpapers. These are from the Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary backgrounds (except for the R.O.B. image), hence the Famicom, but since it’s the NES’s 25th birthday today, I thought now would be a good time to make a batch of these.

I created versions for both older iPhones (which will also work with Palm Pres) and iPhone 4s — I would have made a series for Android handsets, but it doesn’t look like there’s a standard size for the dozens of models out there, so you’ll just have to make your own wallpapers!:

“NES Anniversary” by Nintendo History System author Bill Mudron (click for a larger image). Mudron posted this dandy doodle of a DS playing Nester, his bow-tied partner Howard Phillips, the Notorious R.O.B., and Nintendo of America founder Minoru Arakawa to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the NES’s stateside release.

Did you know the NES’s initial 1985 test launch in New York was considered a failure? Shortly after its debut, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, “Nintendo, a Japanese company that attempted to introduce a new video-game machine over Christmas, failed miserably, retailers say.”

It’s a good thing Nintendo went ahead with a wider NES release despite that problematic test launch!

NES M9 display. This auction is a few days old and has been posted elsewhere, but I think this item is really neat. It’s a store display, containing non-functional versions of the NES, the ROB, and its games, with marketing junk about all of them on the back wall. It’s like a time capsule preserving Christmas 1985.

I remember staring at this exact display (well, an identical one, but you know what I mean) in the back room of the toy store in which my mom worked. It wasn’t on display out front because the NES had long since sold out and they didn’t want to appear as if they were carrying them.

Anyway, bidding is up to like a thousand bucks now.
