Sepas Channel: G-Mode's new-ish RPG for DSiWare →

G-Mode, a company known mostly for its stewardship of Data East IP, launched a new Japanese DSiWare RPG called Sepas Channel yesterday. The gameplay concept involves switching between four different amnesiac characters (each on a different “channel”) in order to solve character-specific challenges.

It’s the style that makes this mobile port interesting. Between the modern setting, cutesy character designs, and traditional RPG presentation, it bears a strong resemblance to Earthbound/Mother, though with crisper art. For some reason, it reminds me of a Skip game.

We were going to pass on talking about this game, but then Andriasang posted the above art. Very nice!

Etrian Odyssey 3 food truck. To promote the April 1 release of Etrian Odyssey 3 in Japan, Atlus has parked this goofy truck in Akihabara to sell rice balls and tapioca drinks, and hand out coasters with the game’s character art on it. Too bad the WiZMan’s World ice cream cart didn’t beat them to market!

People around the Daido Limited Building in Akihabara are going to be able to find out what hardcore dungeon crawling tastes like! Also, they’ll have a prime spot to meet up with other Dragon Quest IX players. There’s probably going to be a crowd of them around there.

Yes, Luminous Arc 3 has public bath event scenes. It promises that you will be able to see girls’ figures. Or something like that. You’ll also be able to get a look at one buff, sullen guy.

This is, of course, exactly what I look for in a role-playing game. When did these games start getting so matter-of-fact about this kind of fanservice? It’s basically listed as a feature.

Personal Trainer: Walking Warlord →

I’m very happy with this article I wrote on Walking Meter: Unification ~ Become the Ruler of the Warring States by Walking, a pedometer-based Sengoku strategy RPG. It’s easily the raddest game I read about this week.

JC, who helped a lot translating details for the piece, and I discussed at length about our wishes to see RPGs further integrated our lives, giving us the motivation and routines we need to get so many unmanaged tasks taken care of.

Exercise RPGs, finance RPGs, and chore RPGs are just the beginning. How about a hygiene RPG? Imagine an MMO in which the high-level players were actually the least gross people. Or an RPG for dealing with social anxiety? Or an RPG about blogging about RPGs?

Amazon’s preorder deals for DS RPGs

If you’re looking to shave a few dollars off the Nintendo DS’s lineup of upcoming RPGs (with hiked up prices thanks to Atlus’ Spoils bundles and the Square Enix tax), consider these preorder deals:

Mario & Luigi 3 RPG!!! boxart. The American covers for the Mario & Luigi games are certainly nothing to complain about, with gorgeous full-color art from Masanori Sato instead of that same bullshit 3D Mario model Nintendo uses for everything, but the minimalist Japanese covers are even better.

This latest box is my favorite of the series, because it’s a play on the first game’s boxart:

The new one is the same box, but interrupted by a giant Bowser! How clever!

Here’s the Mario & Luigi 2 boxart, because, well, I’ve kind of got a post about Mario & Luigi boxarts going and I might as well throw it in:

Trailer for Iron Master: Legendary Blacksmith. “Make hundreds of arms and armors from Touch Action Games.” Barunson Creative’s DS game is basically a game about running a shop inside an RPG!

Not only do you make weapons and armor, you also manage a shop and deal with the paladins, warriors, archers, and other stereotypical RPG members who come in. Feel the thrill of management!

Don't expect A Witch's Tale any time soon →

Well, if I was impressed with the early availability of A Witch’s Tale art before, I’m … uh, more impressed than that now. RPGamer spoke to NIS America about their upcoming projects, and A Witch’s Tale is no longer expected out until fall of next year, with a possible Halloween release.

That’s a drastic delay for something that was expected this winter. According to NIS, the developers have decided to change the game from an action RPG to an RPG.

Item Getter celebrated with... dance moves →

Item Getter is more and more hilarious every time it comes up, and the recent press conference and media blitz is keeping the game right on track.

Not only does there seem to be a curious lack of items in the screens (even the screens with items lack items in some slots, the slackers), but promotion for the title was done with, uh, dancing and people in costume. The only item around seemed to be a promotional poster.

I love this game.

“Thanks for developing Dragon Quest X for Wii!”

Satoru Iwata, reacting to Dragon Quest producer Yuji Horii’s apparently unintended announcement of the next game in the venerable RPG series.

There’s not much more to the announcement than that — except for the DS Dragon Quest IX’s Japanese release date (March 28) and price (ouch — 5,980 yen, or $65).
