Forbidden Magna is looking alright ⊟
At least better than it did when I last saw the game on a Nintendo Direct months ago. ICYMI, this is the action RPG/sim that has you running an inn, and is the latest from a number of people who worked on the Rune Factory series before the Neverland studio shut down.
Forbidden Magna releases in Japan on October 2.
Rune Factory 4 cancelled in Europe ⊟
First spotted on Rice-Digital but later announced to other sites by MAQL, the European release of Rune Factory 4 has been cancelled. “While MarvelousAQL has made every effort to secure the title’s release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time.”
One theory going around is that the cancellation has something to do with the closure of developer Neverland, but I don’t think so! The game is done, and I’m sure MAQL would be able to hire somebody to implement the localized text. My guess is the localization itself is the problem: it would be expensive to translate a text-heavy RPG (and its butler puns) into multiple languages, and the prospects of a fantasy farming RPG may just not be worth it.
Rune Factory dev Neverland closing ⊟
The Japanese studio behind the Rune Factory and Lufia games is filing for bankruptcy and shutting down after failing to raise funds to continue operations. I was shocked to hear about it, as Neverland has been around for 20 years now, and its most recent release Rune Factory 4 was the franchise’s fastest-selling game.
The Rune Factory series will stick around, as its publisher in Japan Marvelous AQL owns the property. Yoshifumi Hashimoto, producer for the series at MAQL, posted a message (translated by Siliconera) indicating there’s another project on the way: “it’ll still remain a secret as to what kind of title we’ll be releasing next, but I can say that the staff members are still doing great.”
Thanks to Otome Game Blurbs for the pic.
Rune Factory 4 is a game after my own butt ⊟
There’s a great article by Jason Schreier at Kotaku about the work that went into Xseed’s localization for this 3DS JRPG. Read it if fun translations/localizations interest you!
Doktorzara is to blame for the pic above, one of many shots that have done a great job convincing me that I need to try this out.
Our leaked Pokémon XY shots ⊟
Wait, this isn’t Pokémon at all! This is Rune Factory 4, which released for 3DS earlier this week. And we didn’t even take these shots — credit for that goes to Sugarbloodsuckerz.
This isn’t the only video game joke Xseed threw in — here’s another one for a certain Western RPG you might be familiar with. The publisher brought this great item description back from Rune Factory 3, too.
Didn’t know Rune Factory 4 did this! ⊟
Not many 3DS games release in North America with inside cover art that takes advantage of these eco-friendly boxes! There’s Kid Icarus: Uprising and… Maybe something else I’m missing?
[Update: Commenters and peeps on Twitter have pointed out that Theatrhythm, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and Nintendogs have had this inside cover art too]
Rune Factory 4 finally has a release date ⊟
It’s October 1 — the same day that Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl releases. Sure, they’re both very different games, but y’all are going to release two niche Japanese 3DS RPGs on the same day? And Pokemon X/Y releases less than two weeks after…
I really hope these two games don’t get buried this fall. At least this isn’t as crazy as what’s going on when November 22 hits.
Here’s the official Rune Factory 4 U.S. website by the way. Zen United also recently announced that it will release the action/farming game in Europe.
Rune Factory 4 coming to 3DS in North America this summer from XSEED
The publisher is super busy today, also announcing Killer is Dead (PS3/Xbox), Valhalla Knights 3 (Vita), Ys Memories of Celceta (!)(Vita), and Ys I & II Chronicles + (PC). Today is XSEED E3, I guess.
Three minutes of Rune Factory 4, releasing for 3DS in Japan on July 19 — we’ve yet to hear a U.S. announcement from Natsume, though it does intend to release Harvest Moon: A New Beginning here some time this year.
Some details you might notice in the trailer: floating islands, this fancy dude with his peacock feather fan, and a brief bit hinting that swimsuits will likely make a return — I’m told that people are excited about that last point.

Rune Factory 4 has a guy with a banana in his pants. And a carrot in his jacket, cupcakes on his rings, and buttons oozing with icing (click for a larger image).
And here I thought this series was just an action RPG with Harvest Moon elements, and maybe the occasional picnic. But no, according to this Famitsu scan, Rune Factory is also about dudes with fruit stuffed into their trousers.

Picnicking in Rune Factory 4. Like other Harvest Moon series games (of which Rune Factory is a spinoff), it is possible for your character to date and eventually marry an NPC. In this game, you can take that date out on a picnic — “and,” as Siliconera puts it, “if you’re lucky you might get a love confession.”
Or murdered, because there are monsters everywhere, even during your picnic.
