Japanese Scribblenauts commercial. Forgive me — it’s about a week old, but I hadn’t seen this yet, and I think it’s interesting. Ever since Konami announced that it would publish 5th Cell’s puzzle game in Japan, I’ve been curious about how it would handle text input, and now thanks to this trailer I know.

Luckily, kanji knowledge isn’t required to play Hirameki Puzzle Maxwell no Fushigi na Note (that’s the Japanese title): it deals only in the hiragana and katakana syllabaries and our alphabet, all accessible either through handwriting input or virtual keyboards.

I… think this trailer also offers the debut of Maxwell’s voice! Speaking Japanese!

Finally, here’s the Japanese boxart, which is adorable:

“Scirbblenauts Tribute” by Andy Poon (click for full size).

[Update: Disregard everything I said below except for the last paragraph! I mixed up Andrew Poon from Rainmaker Studios with Andy Poon from Nerdcorps Entertainment. The latter actually created this magnificent piece, and he’s an art director / concept artist at his respective studio. Please accept my apologies for the confusion!]

Andrew works as an animator at Vancouver’s Rainmaker Entertainment, formerly Mainframe Entertainment, which has created “cinematics” for games like Ghostbusters, Prototype, and Assassin’s Creed 2.

Back in the day, though, Rainmaker/Mainframe also produced CGI-animated shows like ReBoot and Beast Wars — Andrew wasn’t at the company around that time, but I wanted to bring it up because I haven’t thought of ReBoot and Beast Wars in forever. Those shows were soooo tight (despite me never getting home from school in time to catch the first ten minutes of Beast Wars).

Anyway, Andrew created this great art as a tribute to his friend, Edison Yan, art director of Scribblenauts.

Super Scribblenauts commercial. I haven’t paid much attention to this sequel (partially because of the reduced attention it’s received from the gaming press, but also because I hardly made any headway with the original game), but this comes out today!

This might be the last DS game we see from 5th Cell for a while, what with the studio working on an unannounced XBLA title and not yet developing anything for Nintendo 3DS, so if you enjoy the company’s work, pick this up!

By the way, I hope Super Scribblenauts has an ending that’s as crazy as Drawn to Life 2’s credits.

Super Scribblenauts trailer shows off purple cars, rainbow telephones, and other adjective-noun combinations. Though this is receiving a tenth of the hype that the original Scribblenauts enjoyed, I’m thrilled that there’s a possibility players will be able to summon tiny cartridges.

Other stuff I can’t wait to conjure: surfing ninja, dancing robot, musical lizard, floating house, estranged father, supportive mother, lost innocence, unbroken family, sober living, happiness that isn’t in a bottle, and a bunch of other zany things you don’t see every day!

Three screenshots from Super Scribblenauts, the sequel to last year’s noun-summoning hit, now with adjectives to modify the “colour, size, style, behaviours and many other aspects” of whatever object you’re looking to conjure. Now you can call on pink aliens, raunchy cowboys, cursed ice cream, and tiny cartridges to do your bidding.

5th Cell and Warner Bros. expect to release Super Scribblenauts, presumably with the control issues from the original game addressed, this August.

Scribblenauts 2 revealed on Nintendo Power’s latest cover. According to the magazine’s April issue, the sequel will release this fall with some 10,000 new words, 120 new levels, more merits, a new hint system, improved controls, an enhanced level editor, and a focus on adjectives. Also, Scribblenauts 2 will no longer feature a par system.

This follow-up makes sense, business-wise, as the first game sold more than a million copies and publisher Warner Bros. is in the business of continuing profitable franchises. I wonder if Scribblenauts 2 will receive as much hype this time around, now that the concept isn’t so novel? I suppose we’ll find out soon if this “adjectives” mechanic is enough to inspire the hearts of gamers again, maybe even at next week’s Game Developers Convention.

“[We worked on Scribblenauts for] a year and three months, which is crazy. That’s probably the only thing I don’t like about 5th Cell’s development. It’s just how it is. That’s the way it is. We’re competing against companies like Square Enix and Nintendo, triple-A products.

People hold us to the same standard, which I’m totally fine with — I want them to hold us to that standard. But they get three years, and I get one year. That’s the big difference. I feel like a boxer with one hand tied between my back.

I can make incredible stuff in three years, you know. I made Scribblenauts in one year. What could I make in three years with their budget? That’s just how it is. That’s just what you have to deal with.”

Another excerpt from 5th Cell creative director Jeremiah Slaczka’s interview with Gamasutra. This bit was stuck in between details about the studio taking a break from the DS for the next year and working on an XBLA game.

How would Scribblenauts have turned out with another year or two of development put into it? Imagine how Contact, Puzzle Quest, Barnyard Blast, and other flawed DS titles would’ve played given additional time to cook.

“Other people say like, ‘Oh, open world! Sandbox!’ and all this stuff. But it’s not really. You’re in a giant square, and you can drive a car anywhere… sort of. But that’s not really emergent or anything, you know what I mean?”

5th Cell creative director Jeremiah Slaczka advocating Scribblenauts’ emergent gameplay while slagging off the predictable open worlds you find in many “AAA” titles that don’t fulfill their promise of “sandbox” gameplay”.
