Game Gear games rated for 3DS →

The first two 3DS Virtual Console games from a non-Nintendo platform will likely be Shinobi and Sonic Triple Trouble. These two Game Gear games have been rated for 3DS release by the ESRB. As someone who just loves the Virtual Console in general, I’m excited to see this GDC 2011 announcement come true. Ah, I love this period in a Nintendo system’s lifespan, full of hope for new services that has yet to be dashed by the minimal fulfillment of those services.

Turbografx-16 games were supposed to come along, but it’s not clear whether that will happen because there’s no Hudson anymore. I hope it happens anyway. I’ll buy Devil’s Crush on any platform. Let my redundant game purchases be the fuel for the company’s renewal!

Four more minutes of Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai that will make you curse 3DS’s region-locking.

Did you know that more Tiny Cartridge readers are excited about this game than upcoming “core” titles like Metal Gear Solid 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, etc.? It’s true! Another fun fact: after watching this trailer and hearing its music, more Tiny Cartridge writers are excited about Project Mirai than those other games, too.

Rhythm hanggliding in Rhythm Thief. Well, rhythm hanggliding plus rhythm… soccer ball shooting? Or something.

Sega put a few other videos of Rhythm Thief minigames up on its Japanese YouTube channel, You can see those below. The way the moves are called out kinda reminds me of Space Channel 5

There are also some commercials on the channel, but good luck making sense of them.

Trailer for Crush 3D demonstrates the game’s 2D/3D environment crushing system. Despite the amateurish art, strange boxart choices, and the colorful makeover (compare to the original PSP version), the puzzles in this platformer look really fun to play with.

Maybe it’s just easy to impress people with perspective-flipping, hence why people were so hyped for Super Paper Mario before that released, and why dudes are hyped about Polytron’s Fez now. Or perhaps this is a great game anyway, and that’s why it won Best New Handheld IP at the Develop Industry Excellence awards in 2007.

Ten GIFs of Sonic the Hedgehog running like an idiot, sparked off by an animation from Zac Gorman and a call by Nedroid’s Anthony Clark (click for larger images).

Participating artists in order of appearance:

There are like 20 billion more of these, and I unfortunately can’t share them all, but I like these the most.

Rhythm Thief trailer. I unfortunately tend to forget about this game among upcoming releases, but I’m quite into it whenever I’m reminded! This story trailer shows a lot of style, some exciting jazzy music, and … what, that guy’s supposed to be Napoleon? Huh.

Crush 3D’s Japanese and U.S. boxarts compared. The Japanese version looks like more like a brain training experience than a puzzle-platformer. Also, the game’s title there, Nightmare Puzzle Crush 3D, is literally the smallest text on the packaging (first line on the red strip).

I wonder if Japanese gamers will be disappointed when they pop this in and discover it looks nothing like the cover? And what about U.S. gamers, who will quickly learn that the game has nothing to do with Harry Potter or Dr. Wily, despite their cameos on the boxart?

“There are few other classic game reimaginings that do such a great job at modernizing a franchise while still capturing the original’s spirit as well as Shinobi [for 3DS]. It effortlessly plays in the same league as Bionic Commando Rearmed and Contra 4.

While not quite perfect, especially considering the graphics and the botched 3D mode, it’s one of the best games in the series yet. But also viewed simply as an old-school 2D action platformer, Shinobi is quite excellent.”

An excerpt of Hardcoregaming 101’s review of Shinobi for Nintendo 3DS. As with Cave Story 3D, this title suffered intense derision from gamers over its aesthetic leading up to its release — also like Nicalis’ game, now that it’s out, Shinobi is picking up generous reviews. I wonder if the developers at Griptonite are now like, “I told you this shit was gonna be the bomb, didn’t I? Eat it.”

I really hope this isn’t the last handheld action game we see from Griptonite, which brought us gems like Spyro: The Eternal Night (GBA) and the recent Spider-Man DS releases. “Freemium” mobile publisher Glu acquired the studio three months ago, though, and, judging by this posting, Griptonite’s headed in a different direction. :o(

Lance Henriksen, “Bishop” from Aliens, playing the Knife Trick minigame in Aliens Infestation. inspired by his own character (and hand). An AVP Galaxy member met Henriksen at an event yesterday, and “gathered up the nerve to tell him about Aliens: Infestation and the Knife trick mode they put in the game.”

He reportedly enjoyed the game, and its pixelated representation of Bishop’s bloody hand on the title screen. Even in context, it must be a little strange to be handed a video game about cutting up your own hand.
