Immediate thoughts while watching this Power Rangers Samurai: The Game (for Wii and DS) commercial:

  • Wow, way to go, Asian kid, managing to get a white girlfriend at such an early age (does his mom know?).
  • It’s obvious this is a staged scene; no real Asian household allows kids to wear shoes inside.
  • The girl doesn’t actually have any lines. I like to imagine she’s afraid to say anything, worried that she’ll look silly — “Maybe this kind of samurai stuff happens all the time in Oriental homes?”

Samurai forever.

Screenshot from Kyoryu Sentai ZyuRanger (Dinosaur Squadron Beast Ranger). As you can probably guess, this game is based on the Japanese show that eventually came to the States as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Aparently this game is terrible — the first eight links that show up on Google after searching for the title say “AWFUL GAME”. In ZyuRanger’s defense, though, all of the links direct you to the same goofy YouTube video.

If you’d like to play the Famicom title, Dank-Trans just posted an English translation patch, 17 years after the Japanese release. “Ai, yi, yi!”

Clip from short-lived early Sentai/Power Rangers ancestor JAKQ Dengekitai. JAKQ’s gimmick was that their costumes and weapons were all playing-card themed. Specifically, Nintendo playing cards show up a lot in this show. It only makes sense, given that Nintendo was the leading playing-card company in Japan, and thus probably the most widely available.

Even so, there was probably some kind of promotional relationship going on here. Look how awesome and powerful the show makes Nintendo cards seem! I totally want some. Also, I am in love with the music, and the first person to find me some JAKQ background music wins.
