Watch the Game Center CX USA Special →

Valiant Something Awful members have translated, subtitled, and posted the recent two-hour Game Center CX special in which Arino and his crew visit California. You can see the episode in the YouTube video above, or download it here when the video is inevitably pulled.

In this episode, we see Arino play vintage games at the Musee Mecanique, irritate a serious Skee-Ball player, and compare the owner of a suburban game shop to a tired Mario. There are also appearances by Ray Barnholt and Attract Mode’s Adam Robezzoli! So awesome.

The challenge this time is Data East’s Robocop game for NES, which looks really, really bad.

Shinya Arino’s Retro Game Master business card and signed Game Center CX instruction manual (click for larger image). I wonder if that card is a super collectible, since it’s an English version, unlike the ones that come in Japanese copies of GCCX/GCCX2.

The excess Tokyo Game Show news this week delayed all the GCCX stuff I wanted to post from last week:

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino visiting fans at Los Angeles’ Japan Arcade last night. If you skip to the 4:05 mark, you can see him receiving and reacting to the poster from Nina Matsumoto that we featured two days ago.

And after that, you’ll see a lady totally freaking out over meeting Arino. Not going to lie, had I been able to make it, that would’ve been me, except more high pitched.

You can see photos that fans took at the event on the Retro Game Master USA Facebook page. If you were there, make sure to post/link your own experiences in the comments!

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino screws around with the Nintendo 3DS’s stereoscopic 3D display in this special eShop episode — available only in Japan.

So,this week Japan gets Arino antics, Europe gets a 3D trailer for WayForward’s Mighty Switch Force, and we get… Nintendo Show 3D! Has anyone watched this yet? What do you think? How does it compare to Nintendo Week? And why is it streaming on the eShop instead of appearing in the Nintendo Video app?

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino vs. the Angry Video Game Nerd, by Jaime Herrera (click for larger image).

I love the Nerd, but he is just outclassed in this match. Arino’s Ultra Combo, where he sends opponents back to the ’80s to play old video games and complete challenges while a younger version of him cheers along, is a doozy.

Have you kept up with the Game Center CX/Retro Game Master episodes Kotaku has been airing? The latest episode is for The Mystery Of Atlantiswatch it here!

Game Center CX’s Arino playing Excitebike 3D. If the video here doesn’t load for you — Nico Nico Douga can be finicky like that, and it’s not too friendly with Tumblr’s dashboard — you can settle for a condensed commercial Nintendo posted on its Japanese site.

Want a new reason to hate 3DS region-locking (or region-specific content)? While we’re dicking around with Green Lantern movie trailers on the eShop, in Japan, 3DS owners are watching free episodes of Game Center CX.

Each year brings a new reason for Game Center CX fans in the West to feel slighted. :o(

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World film director Edgar Wright (also directed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz). The two met up recently to record a commentary track for the Japanese Blu-ray release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World!

You can see more photos from Edgar Wright’s trip to Japan, including some Retro Game Challenge shots, a Tiny Nintendo DS, and a very serious Michael Cera over here.

And while we’re talking about this, Ray Barnholt, publisher of Scroll and editor of the Game Center CX 2/Retro Game Challenge 2 fan translation, appeared on The Rumble Pack podcast and talked about his work on the fledgling project. It’s reassuring to hear he’s aiming to match Mother 3’s English translation for this work!

“I’m not really in touch with [my high school friends] from that time, so I don’t know. But they probably watch my shows and think ‘My God, that guy used to be the number one biggest loser in our group!’”

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino thinking back about the high school friends he once sharpened his video game skills with, and what they think about his “success s a video gamer” now. This was the only interesting bit from Arino’s brief “interview” that I spotted in the latest issue of GamesTM (#100 — lot of rad covers!).

As someone who went back in time and played more than a dozen games with a younger Arino, I can say that I don’t think he’s a loser at all! Just misunderstood…

Arino's office chair up for auction →

I’ve mentioned before that you can buy the same Duo Rest Chair model featured in episodes of Game Center CX (if you have $559+ to blow), but you can now acquire the actual chair that GCCX section chief Shinya Arino sits on when filming the retro video game show!

SKY PerfecTV is auctioning off the autographed office chair for charity, sending all the proceeds to Japan’s UNESCO association. The auction ends in five days, and the current highest bid is at ¥12,000, $142.

Now you, too, can play classic games in your office while enjoying maximum comfort in a teal chair. And after you finally defeat Bowser in Super Mario World following dozens of failed attempts that leave you with only one life left, when you lean back and throw your arms up in victory, know that it wasn’t just a chair supporting you during this trial, it was Arino’s spirit that empowered you.

Who knows what strange powers might still be imbued in the seat, and whether it’s capable of passing on that arcane force from Arino’s butt to yours?

Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino plays Populous for the Super Famicom, by AZ (click for a larger version). As far as I can tell, Game Center CX has never aired a Populous episode — I see no mention of Arino playing it at Crunk Games, at least — but I like this depiction of the Kacho immersed in the strategy title’s game world.

If you examine the image closely, you’ll notice that Arino is lounging on the teal Duo Rest Chair we featured here seven months ago. I once had dreams of purchasing one for my office, but it was priced at around $559 before shipping!

Arino’s Super Mario Bros. 3 challenge, Virtual Console commercial. The Game Center CX host is yelling “heta” (“unskillfulness”)  while trying to hop onto the Goombas for the World 1-2 1UP trick. And at the end of the clip, he admits, “The kacho is not good at games!”

He actually took on the same challenge during the show’s second season, and though Arino failed to complete SMB 3 after playing for 18 hours, he was able to pull off the 1UP trick after 39 tries. Not trying to brag, but my wife is like 80 million times better than Arino at SMB 3. Seriously, she’s a genius at the game (while I’m terrible at it).

Buy: New Super Mario Bros. Wii ($46.99 with an extra $10 video game credit)
