For those of you with import copies of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 1 to 3, when your adventurer dies deep inside the games’ dungeons — as he often does — starting November, you can no longer put out a WiFi request for friends to come rescue you and your gear.
That’s because Sega will shut down the servers for the Shiren games it put out in Japan (Shiren 4, which was released by Spike, is unaffected). Sega also published the first Shiren DS game in North America, and people have had issues connecting to the game’s WiFi servers for months now — it’s likely they’re offline, too.
Of course, hardly anyone uses WiFi rescues; password rescues, which allow you to trade codes with online dudes willing to save you, are more common. In fact, someone even created a Revive Key Generator for the first game! That’s a super useful tool, if you don’t mind cheating.

As promised, Shiren the Wanderer 3’s boxart remains intact for its North American release next Spring, though Atlus did use a questionable Papyrus knockoff for “The Wanderer”. I showed JC the new cover, and he responded, “Looks like Shiren: The Crocodile Hunter”.
The new packaging art also uses a lame gradient effect on the logo — the original gradient was much more attractive. What’s up with Atlus and its terrible logo gradients lately, anyway? Here’s SMT: Strange Journey’s U.S. box:
Did Atlus travel back in time and hire a new artist fresh from the 1994 U.S. anime industry?
Back to Shiren the Wanderer 3, you might have heard that publisher Spike is porting the roguelike to PSP with six new dungeons and balance changes. I hope Atlus will include those additions with the Wii verson’s U.S. localization!
