Sonic Lost World 3DS trailer

The 3DS version of this new Sonic game looks surprisingly similar to the Wii U version! And looks pretty cool! Although I imagine it has the potential to make you super sick in 3D.

I haven’t played a Sonic game seriously in forever, but kinda thinking about giving this one a try.

PREORDER Sonic Lost World, upcoming games

Here is the Sonic Lost World trailer

Not gonna let myself get sucked into the Sonic cycle — just gonna leave this here and let you guys talk about how it maybe looks fun or it reminds you of Sonic X-treme or blah blah shitty friends or good god why is there already so much fanart porn for the green lady.

Here is an image that maybe shows what the portable version of this 3DS/Wii U-exclusive looks like, or maybe it’s not real. Maybe none of this is real, this news, this blog, you or me. Maybe we’re just badly drawn fanart porn on Tumblr, a scroll away from someone seeing us and our shame.

[Update: False alarm, here are some 3DS screenshots]

Ten GIFs of Sonic the Hedgehog running like an idiot, sparked off by an animation from Zac Gorman and a call by Nedroid’s Anthony Clark (click for larger images).

Participating artists in order of appearance:

There are like 20 billion more of these, and I unfortunately can’t share them all, but I like these the most.

New Sonic shirts by Cospa. Sure, that Sonic Generations shirt looks like an especially expensive custom airbrush job from the mall, or like one of those polyester button-ups with an all-over Goku, but I kind of like it! Do I like it ¥6,300 ($82) worth? Heeeeeelll no.

The other shirt, with the clever text design, is much more stylish — and also cheaper at ¥3,045 ($40). Keep in mind if you get one of these, though, that everybody’s going to know you like Sonic.

“Sonic Boom” by Orioto. The artist has occupied himself with 3D conversions of previous art recently, but he took the time to make this original digital painting inspired by Sonic CD. Seeing how cool Sonic could look just makes the games that much more of a punch in the gut.
Speaking of Sonic games, there are some new Mushroom Hill Zone screenshots here of one that doesn’t look too bad: the 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

More 3D Mario art by Mikaël “Orioto” Aguirre. After seeing a favorable response to yesterday’s experiment on a certain influential blog, Orioto converted another of his digital Mario paintings to 3D, available either in wigglepic format or as a 3DS browser-friendly MPO here.
He then did the same for some of his Sonic artwork:

3D Sonic that looks cool! Miraculous!

Pakistani Happy Meal commercial for Sonic the Hedgehog LCD toys. The UK and France had their own McDonald’s ads for the toys, but neither were as classy as this one.

You should note that Rouge the Bat isn’t wearing clothes in this video. I guess we’ve become one of those sites.

Sonic jackets, including a Sonic/Coca-Cola tie-in, a Sonic 2 jacket, and a Sonic GOTY jacket. If you get one of these, you can pretend you played sports at Embarrrassing Promotional Item High. If you get one of the Sonic Colors pre-order hats, you can pretend you were the mascot.

“Sonic 4”, not the one that Sega revealed a few days ago, but the one that’s been around for well over ten years now! As noted by Frank Cifaldi, it’s obviously not an official game, but a rom hack of an old SNES Speedy Gonzales game. It’s been getting a decent amount of attention since Frank put a spotlight on it, though a few simple observations have yet to be made:

  • Since the SNES can’t handle Sonic’s normal running speed (you know, because Genesis does what Nintendon’t), the programmers decided to add puffs of smoke wherever he went. Either that or it originally belonged to Speedy.
  • Sonic’s sprite is from Sonic 2, with one sole exception: when he slides down a line via handlebars, that’s actually from Sonic 3!
  • But for whatever reason, Sonic’s “curling up into a ball” animation is completely absent. Instead, he jumps with his body completely stretched out, utilizing the sprite normally displayed when he’s jumping off a spring.
  • And because he doesn’t use his backside in an offensive manner, i.e. as a spiky ball, he can’t jump on top of enemies. Instead he simply kicks his opponents by walking/running into them. Which begs the question of whether or not foes can do harm at all. The boss battle in particular is anticlimactic.
  • For whatever reason, Mario is in the game, and trapped in a cage. Which Sonic can free him from by, once again, just running into him It’s funny how, whenever Sonic is in a rom hack, his company’s primary competitor is not too far behind…

You know, stuff like this is precisely why I miss the 8/16 bit era. Granted, not all bootlegs are this interesting, but most have some degree of charm, plus the more ambitious ones are actually quite fine games in their own rights. Now, if you go to YouTube, you’re going to find a mountain of Sonic rom hacks, but here are my personal favorites:

Two kind of neat shirt designs. First, “8-bit Blues” by Jaakie201, which is a cute variant on the usual “blowing on NES cartridges” joke, which normally irritates the hell out of me on shirts. If you like it, go vote for it, because this submission hasn’t been chosen for printing by Threadless yet!

Second, “Metal Sonic Sprites” by Trunks & Soto. The same idea as the webcomic’s Sonic Sprite shirt, but with cooler-looking Metal Sonic sprites, in the shape of a cooler-looking Metal Sonic head. This one is available for sale for $17.95.

Sonic shirt by the creators of the Trunks & Soto webcomic. It can be damned hard to be a Sonic fan these days, but at least some t-shirt-designing fans are treating the character with some respect with this sprite mosaic.
Maybe you can get this shirt and keep it in your closet, so you’ll be ready to jump right back into proud Sonic fandom once again in the unlikely event that Project Needlemouse isn’t a major disappointment.
