Y’all have to read this piece in the Atlantic: “A Quest for the Secret Origins of Lost Video-Game Levels" by Heidi Kemps. It’s about meeting Yuji Naka (repeatedly), about software piracy, and about her own history of fandom, and it’s the best thing I’ve read in ages.
I don’t want to say too much more about the contents of the story. Just do me a personal favor and go read it.

New images, stuff wrapped with athletic tape for Sonic Boom ⊟
I don’t know why the boomerang is wrapped with athletic tape. Maybe the same reason why Sega threw another silly friend into the mix, Sticks the badger. Because.
The two screens are from the Sanzaru-developed 3DS version, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Both the portable and Wii U releases (the latter titled Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric) will feature the new snake-y villain Lyric.
Here’s the scoop on Sticks, Lyric, and the 3DS edition:
"For the first time ever, gamers will be able to take on the role of Sticks, the newest member of the team who will play an integral role in the story after her best friend Amy gets kidnapped by the ancient villain Lyric. While the Wii U version is focused on action-adventure and exploration, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal will place a bigger emphasis on platforming and puzzles. Additionally, unique collectibles featured in the Nintendo 3DS version will unlock special content on Wii U via Wi-Fi connectivity.”
It looked like there was a video of the 3DS version published earlier, but now it’s been taken down or set to private?

This is what Sonic & his strong friends look like now ⊟
Sega announced another 3DS/Wii U exclusive with Sonic Boom, which will accompany a new animated series and toy line, all of which feature the Sonic family’s revamped look. The reactions I’ve seen have ranged from “Sonic Boom will save anime” to women calling off their weddings with Knuckles.
Myself, I’m so divested from the series by now, I’m not even bothered that it looks like King Tut bit the heroes and turned everyone into half-mummies, or that Knuckles went HAM on the weights but forgot leg day. (my favorite reaction has been Kyledk05's: “How the f*** is Knuckles supposed to maintain those siqq gainz with all the cardio he's gonna be doing?”)
Anyway, Sega handed off development to Big Red Button Entertainment (Wii U) and Sanzaru Games (Nintendo 3DS). The games will feature “collaborative gameplay at its core,” and will also ”introduce exploration, combat and a new Enerbeam tether mechanic that will allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways.” Trailer after the break:
Sonic returns for Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U ⊟
Watch him make his entrance here. Also headed for the game’s roster (we forgot to post about it): Toon Link! The game releases in 2014, which, as you can tell from the second row of GIFs above, is not the Year of Luigi.
Here is the Sonic Lost World trailer
Not gonna let myself get sucked into the Sonic cycle — just gonna leave this here and let you guys talk about how it maybe looks fun or it reminds you of Sonic X-treme or blah blah shitty friends or good god why is there already so much fanart porn for the green lady.
Here is an image that maybe shows what the portable version of this 3DS/Wii U-exclusive looks like, or maybe it’s not real. Maybe none of this is real, this news, this blog, you or me. Maybe we’re just badly drawn fanart porn on Tumblr, a scroll away from someone seeing us and our shame.
[Update: False alarm, here are some 3DS screenshots]
3D Sonic the Hedgehog coming to eShop
Sega’s 3DS series of remakes for its classic games will bring an enhanced edition of the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Japan next week!
This release includes nice extras like the spin dashing that you can turn on or off, button remapping, normal and CRT modes, and the ability to switch between the Japanese and Western versions of the game to experience their differences. You can even set the audio to emulate the original Sega Genesis or the Sega Genesis model 2, and adjust the stereoscopic 3D to emphasize either depth or pop-out effects similar to Super Mario 3D Land.
I’ve no idea why Sega hasn’t brought its 3D series to the U.S. yet…

Two-button Street Fighter does not sound fun (from what I remember, Mortal Kombat for Game Boy was straight-up basura), but these old sprites overlaid into real-world environments would be a dream to see on handhelds.
The artists behind the strips you see here include:
- Brandon B.
- Geneva Hodgson
- Sam “Hidalgo” Logan
- Tyson Hesse
- KC Green
- Nico Colaleo
- Ashley Davis
- Anthony Nedroid Clark
- Marlo Meekins
I hope this renaissance of game series-specific zines (e.g. Zelda Zine, Ghost Pokezine) never ends. I love this.
Stop lying, Sonic.
It’s way cruel to fill your younger self’s derp-ish head with false hopes and dreams that will never come.

24 copies of Sonic & Knuckles in MEGA LOCK-ON, by @waffleman. It works! I will always remember where I was when I saw this. We are all different people than we were before this.
Hello Kitty the Hedgehog, the result of a collaboration between Sega and Sanrio, which promises more items of this cute nature. Sega will make this plushy available at its amusement centers in Japan later this month — the companies intend to bring their mash-up products to other countries some time next year.
