3D Sonic the Hedgehog coming to eShop

Sega’s 3DS series of remakes for its classic games will bring an enhanced edition of the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Japan next week!

This release includes nice extras like the spin dashing that you can turn on or off, button remapping, normal and CRT modes, and the ability to switch between the Japanese and Western versions of the game to experience their differences. You can even set the audio to emulate the original Sega Genesis or the Sega Genesis model 2, and adjust the stereoscopic 3D to emphasize either depth or pop-out effects similar to Super Mario 3D Land.

I’ve no idea why Sega hasn’t brought its 3D series to the U.S. yet…

Two-button Street Fighter does not sound fun (from what I remember, Mortal Kombat for Game Boy was straight-up basura), but these old sprites overlaid into real-world environments would be a dream to see on handhelds.

Hello Kitty the Hedgehog, the result of a collaboration between Sega and Sanrio, which promises more items of this cute nature. Sega will make this plushy available at its amusement centers in Japan later this month — the companies intend to bring their mash-up products to other countries some time next year.

I would have been fine ignoring Sonic & All Stars Racing: Transformed, the new 3DS/Vita/360/PS3/PC racer releasing late this year, but then TSSZ dropped some (likely untrue) gossip that the game will feature Ristar and Vectorman as playable dudes. O_O

Other new characters: Vyse (Skies of Arcadia) and Gilius Thunderhead (Golden Axe). Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing didn’t do much for me, but I’m keeping an eye on this.

New Sonic shirts by Cospa. Sure, that Sonic Generations shirt looks like an especially expensive custom airbrush job from the mall, or like one of those polyester button-ups with an all-over Goku, but I kind of like it! Do I like it ¥6,300 ($82) worth? Heeeeeelll no.

The other shirt, with the clever text design, is much more stylish — and also cheaper at ¥3,045 ($40). Keep in mind if you get one of these, though, that everybody’s going to know you like Sonic.

“Sonic Boom” by Orioto. The artist has occupied himself with 3D conversions of previous art recently, but he took the time to make this original digital painting inspired by Sonic CD. Seeing how cool Sonic could look just makes the games that much more of a punch in the gut.

Speaking of Sonic games, there are some new Mushroom Hill Zone screenshots here of one that doesn’t look too bad: the 3DS version of Sonic Generations.
