Spelunker’s music performed by a percussion ensemble. I haven’t had an opportunity to post Spelunker music in a long time! This energetic arrangement should be a great way to start your Turkey Day.

The only problem is that it makes me want to get back to Spelunker HD … just as I’m leaving home for the weekend.

Spelunker is a Teacher, and his anime looks fantastic

Above is the opening credit sequence for Spelunker Sensei/Spelunker is a Teacher, the animated film in which the easily-killed explorer from Spelunker tries to live a normal life as a teacher. Above is the opening, featuring a rock version of the Spelunker theme song with Engrish lyrics, sung by legendary Sega musician Takenobu “Daytonaaaaaaaa” Mitsuyoshi.

You must listen to it.

Here’s the ending sequence:

Join me after the break for bonus Spelunker video wonderfulness.

Trailer for Spelunker Sensei, a Flash animated film releasing on DVD March 16. Based on a 4-koma comic posted by Irem (which is, of course, based on Spelunker, the game), Spelunker Sensei is about a gym teacher who is also a Spelunker — helmet, frequent deaths, and all.

Publisher Enterbrain hasn’t shown any actual footage yet, but these Japanese trailers are cute:

This one being the cutest of all:

Speaking of Spelunker, the PS3’s Spelunker HD was one of my “Best of the Rest” of 2010 on Joystiq. If you’re not tired of year-end list features yet, why not read about Spelunker HD and other games I liked?

Japan shopping report, 2K10 edition! I didn’t buy as much big-ticket stuff this year as I did last year, but I did pick up enough interesting things to put up a totally self-indulgent post about.

1. Slime plush and Rockmanjuu: I picked these up at TGS. I walked into the show fully aware that I was going to walk out with some kind of toy Slime, and the Rockmanjuu were one of the cheapest, but most impressive Mega Man items available. I was going to justify the cost even further by eating them for lunch, but Jeremy Parish warned me against eating them. I may still do a Tiny Review!

2. Minna de Spelunker stickers: Super cheap! How has buying Spelunker junk become a tradition?

3. Phantasy Star Zero HUmarl figure: these were 100 yen from a machine in Yodobashi Camera, I think. I got one for me and one for Eric (still be-egged).

4. Famicom games! I didn’t have any particular wants on my list, but I saw neat games in Super Potato’s clearance area. Tetris, in box, was just 50 yen! The other game is Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugo, also known as that one where Kunio’s a samurai.

5. Game Center CX 2: The bottom dropped out on prices for this game, so I was able to pick one up for Eric.

6. Syrupy Slime beverage: For relaxing Slimes, make it Suntory Slime. I have yet to drink this.

7. Famicase poster: I totally could have bought everything in Meteor, but that’s way dangerous considering how many King of Games shirts were in there. I limited myself to just two of these (again, one for Eric).

8. Space Invaders Eco Bag: these were on sale in the Taito Station in Shinjuku. I ended up having to use it when my suitcase was 5 kilograms over the weight limit at the airport.

“King of Famicom,” the Famicom crossover fighting game I desperately wish could be real. I’m a total sucker for these Famicom crossover videos (like Sikamako’s “Michael Fantasy” series).

Poor Spelunker! Even his most powerful, effective attack is based on his crippling weakness. My favorite attack is also from Team Irem: Thomas’s random tonfa fusillade, consisting of “Tonfa Punch!,” “Tonfa Kick!,” “Tonfa Beam!” … “Tonfa Balance!,” “Tonfa Rolling!,” “Tonfa Pushup!,” “Tonfa Do Nothing!” and “Tonfa Escape!” That tonfa is useful!

Spelunker of Love” by Snatch — the Spelunker music made into a theme song, about Spelunker. Proof that there’s someone out there for anyone, even the ineffectual and fragile Spelunker.

Minna de Spelunker Black for PS3. Apparently the first PSN Spelunker game wasn’t frustratingly unfair enough, so IREM came up with a sequel in which you can’t see shit.

The sequel has the same four-player split-screen mode as before, so now you and three friends can each not see a portion of the screen!

Classy Spelunker hoodie design from The King of Games’ Dotlike label. I saw the other “Weakest Explorer” design on a t-shirt in Irem’s booth at TGS, but limited my Spelunker purchases to the business card holder. It was very tempting to blow a bunch of money on a shirt that nobody would have understood (and few would have seen anyway).

This hoodie comes in three colors for ¥7800 ($87).

Spelunker statue from today’s 3D Dot Game Heroes event. The ancient sprite, translated into 3D, and then made real. Fantastic!

From Software could have shown off the game at Tokyo Game Show, where not only thousands of fans, but the assembled gaming press could have had a look at it.

But why do that when you can debut the game at Yodobashi Camera a few weeks later? Good for them, I guess, that they didn’t rush a demo out. Not so good for me.

TGS shopping report! Forgive the not-great photos. I’ll try to swap better ones in if I manage to get any better ones.

Since Tiny Cartridge is, for all intents and purposes, our personal blog, this is the hot destination for all of the non-news-related ephemera from my Tokyo Game Show trip and subsequent Tokyo vacation. And nothing is less news-related than “hey, I bought stuff.” Still, I thought you guys might enjoy seeing it!

By the way, hi. I’m officially back. Eric did a killer job of holding the site down while I was away, and I hope you can all accept the return of my mediocrity.

TGS has a separate expo hall dedicated to shopping. On the two business-only days, I found this to be ridiculously excessive. However, when the public arrives and the thirty-minute line forms just to get into the Capcom booth (and just forget about even getting close enough to the Square Enix booth to see it), it makes rather a lot of sense.

The Capcom booth is where I spent most of my cash. Joystiq’s Ludwig Kietzmann, who is just as much of an Ace Attorney fan as I am, accompanied me, making the act of coveting the Blue Badger jacket a lot more fun. I purchased, instead of the jacket, this little plush Blue Badger, along with an adorable plush Mega Man I couldn’t not buy.

In a last-second impulse purchase, I grabbed the Okamiden screen-cleaning strap, though I realized that buying swag for an unreleased game I’d never played was a risky endeavor. What if the game turned out to be terrible, and I had just committed an act of fandom for something sucky? Luckily, the game has actual promise.

Near the Capcom booth was the Game Center CX booth. I purchased a little strap featuring the King and Arino sprites. When I went back the next day to take pictures, there was a significant line precluding me from further purchases … but there was also a capsule toy dispenser containing these other different straps and badges with caricatures of the ADs.

Finally, my favorite purchase of the show, the Spelunker business card holder. If you ever meet me in a professional context (and some of you have), and if I remember to act like a professional and give you a business card, you’ll see this little beauty in real life.

“Mikulunker,” the Spelunker music and sound effects made entirely with Hatsune Miku Vocaloid software. Not only does this replace the original music and sound with Miku vocals, from what I can pick up, those vocals also describe the action, literal music video style. For example, the ghost theme now has the lyrics “obake ga yattekita,” literally “here comes a ghost.”
