Footage from Nintendo’s Spirit Camera event in San Francisco, during which the San Remo Hotel was made up to be all haunted-y and video game demo-y. This looks really fun, with lots of costumed “ghosts,” paranormal experts talking about scary stuff, and, of course, opportunities to play Spirit Camera.

I bet people were really scared and kind of annoyed when they were playing and some dude jumped out at them. But from my perspective, with the benefit of not having been one of those people, hahahahahaha.

Spirit Camera video from the official site (warning: site features lots of spooky sounds). Is that David Hayter? Snaaaaaaake? Probably not. But close enough to be distracting, so I didn’t really notice what was happening. Upon a second viewing … oh, creepy dolls!

If you’d like to see a bunch of small gameplay clips, you can browse around the site — or watch them on YouTube thanks to Nintendaan.

Nintendo setting up haunted hotel in SF for Spirit Camera

To promote Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, Nintendo is turning San Francisco’s San Remo Hotel into a hella spooky haunted house on March 30. It’s so spooky that nobody under 18 will be admitted. It’s so spooky that only media will be allowed in between 6:30 and 8:30 (it’s well known that video game journalists are all expert ghost hunters.)

You’ll also get an early opportunity to try the game. And those with enough determination will be subjected to — FOOD AND BEVERAGES! Do you dare enter the hall of food and beverages?

Here’s the rest of that Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir live action promo clip we showed last weekend. It’s a bit too silly to actually scare anyone — not that the Japanese version was frightening — but it’s neat to see Nintendo of America producing something like this for a small release.

The part where the woman sees her ghost boyfriend with the 3DS’s camera reminded me of The Baby’s Room (a scary Spanish film I recommend!). I’m hoping the game has more moments like that, and less of rooms looking all splotchy, which doesn’t seem particularly terrifying.

The booklet in this video looks quite a bit bigger than the one packed in with the Japanese version; I wonder if it’s bigger in the Western editions, or if it was just made bigger for the purposes of this video?

North America is getting spooky videos of its own for Spirit Camera — continuing the tradition Japanese horror films adapted for Western audiences, replacing unsettling scenes and creepy moments with surprise shocks.

Here’s the dramatic short movie that was shown for Spirit Camera in Japan, in case you missed it.

Spirit Camera to haunt 3DSes in the U.S.

Though we didn’t get Fatal Frame 4 in the States, the latest game from the horror series’ team at Tecmo Koei, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, will release here on April 13th — Friday the 13th, naturally.

Nintendo provided this description for the augmented reality (with the help of a special booklet) 3DS game:
