“When it comes to the appeal of the Nintendo 3DS, the 3D images have been focused on. I believe, however, the actual users understand that its expanded communication methods like “StreetPass” and “SpotPass” that have a lot of potential.”

Satoru Iwata espousing the “other” features of the 3DS, in an investor briefing. It’s basically Nintendo’s own fault the 3D has taken precedence — marketing and communication with press has heavily favored “glasses-free 3D” as the marquee feature, and the damn thing is called the “3DS” — but as one of those “actual users,” I feel way more impressed by these features.

Few things about the hardware are more exciting than receiving a new inappropriate Swapnote and seeing that blue light come on, or capturing a horde of Miis.

Nintendo is (maybe?) acknowledging the importance of networking, finally, with things like demos, decent eShop games, and the upcoming Nintendo Network, and though it’s not one-for-one with other systems in that department, interesting things happen when Nintendo does care about connectivity stuff.

What’s this SpotPass ‘Notification TEST’?

If you see a blue notification light on your 3DS today, it’s likely this cryptic SpotPass message titled “Notification TEST English”. There’s not much explaining the memo other than what you see above, which for some reason features “Opt out” buttons. Tapping “Launch Software” brings you into the eShop.

There’s speculation over what this could be:

  • Perhaps someone at Nintendo accidentally sent this out while testing the SpotPass delivery system.
  • Nintendo is preparing to send Shop notifications for when it releases new games every Thursday.
  • You have an English test coming up. Better study.

We have contacted Iwata Comics star Satoru Iwata for clarification on the unexplained message, and will update this post if we receive any comments from his staff.

3DS TV content comes to Japan this week →

Nintendo of Japan will release a new 3DS app this week that delivers TV content from Japan’s Fuji TV channel and Nippon TV — though it doesn’t include Fuji’s show Game Center CX, clips of which are available separately through Japan’s eShop.

The “Itsu no Ma Terebi” (SpotPass TV) service, first announced on September of last year, will begin June 21, delivering free 3D television content (with ads), including scintillating, can’t-miss shows like (titles roughly translated by me) Daily Animal Calendar on TV, View a Random Selection of Trains 3D, Magic Classroom 3D, Ido-ring! 3DS Sumo Stadium (idols sumo wrestle), Daily News Pop, Choukoku-no-Mori 3D (views of the Hakone Open-Air Museum five days a week) and ENJOY! SPORT.

If you think “oh, this definitely means we’ll get a similar TV service in Europe/North America” allow me to refer you to the Wii’s “Wii no Ma” video on demand service, the home shopping channel available within the Wii no Ma channel, the Digicam Print Channel, the food delivery channel, the TV guide channel, etc.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition promotional SpotPass notification from Capcom. If you have a 3DS and the game, you’ve probably already received this, but I was late to be pinged and thought it was noteworthy.

Capcom sent out a code today for a special unlockable Blanka figurine (sorry to ruin the surprise). As far as I know, Capcom is the only company doing this kind of SpotPass promotion, which basically has no benefit to them since it only reaches existing customers. It’s just nice. I guess it keeps people playing? Capcom is also the only company to release a launch game with online play, so I guess it just has more interest in taking advantage of the 3DS’s features.

The code, by the way, is DmdkeRvbxc.

Nintendo 3DS’s SpotPass and eShop demonstrated. We’ve discussed much about StreetPass, the system’s ability to automatically exchange user/game data between two 3DSes, but this new Japanese video sheds light on SpotPass, the feature that downloads “information, game data, free software, videos” and more through your wireless router or WiFi hotspots.

This clip shows how the 3DS lights up after downloading content, offers a list of notifications, and presents the downloaded content as a wrapped gift — this looks like a Samurai Warriors Chronicles scenario? The handheld also appears to download promotional materials, like the Professor Layton newsletter. There’s some eShop stuff shown but nothing we haven’t already covered.

This and several other new 3DS videos were posted by NintenDaan last night (nothing too newsworthy from what I can tell, though the Nintendogs trailer is cute):
