Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator commercial.

I’ve never seen a Vulcan that I’ve wanted to punch in the face so much. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m headed to Musicland to pick up a Star Trek poster.

I guess you can talk about the new Star Trek film here, if you’re the type of person who loves talking about movies you just saw in blog comments.

Episode 2 of Infinite Space anime short fansubbed.

Once again, this DATS-translated webisode (ugh) doesn’t make much sense even with subtitles, but at least there’s more action in it than the first short.

With Sega putting out a new Infinite Space video every week now, and the Star Trek film’s release imminent, this Nude Maker-developed title has gotten a lot of buzz from geeks lately. Even as a JRPG version of Star Trek, a flavor many are hoping to taste, Infinite Space seems to capture the sci-fi series’ feel more so than Naked Sky’s licensed XBLA/PSN/PC shooter.

You can build your own starships! Not just customize it with new weapons and technology and what have you, but decide where to drop in the bridge, engineering, and other vital rooms. Battles aren’t fought with two crafts juxtaposed on the screen; you watch your vessel’s shots from inside the bridge, a visible team of subordinates working at their stations to coordinate attacks (those blurry spots are crewmembers, right?):

Infinite Space ships in Japan on June 11th, and is slated to release in the U.S. sometime this year.

Despite its anime cutscenes and JRPG-style dialogue sequences, Infinite Space looks like it will be the game that finally makes me feel like a starship captain, just like that time I went to Star Trek: The Experience (R.I.P.) at the Las Vegas Hilton.

This science fiction RPG, inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s novel Childhood’s End, is scheduled to ship in both Japan and the States in 2009. Here’s another trailer and a developer interview (in Japanese, unfortunately) sent in by reader JFreshIneffect.

Star Trek GIFs as fanboy commentary →

It’s interesting that the two most inventive forms of games industry criticism in recent memory were both borne from oft-reviled forums, Castle Vidcons from Something Awful, and Mama Robotnik’s Star Trek GIFs from NeoGAF.

While Castle Vidcons mocks the “console war” by depicting it as a farcical medieval power struggle, Mama Robotnik uses scenes from The Next Generation episodes to lampoon the embittered fanboys who invest so much of themselves into that war, their sanity dependant on their console’s victory.

The animations also tease system manufacturers and even community members, but my favorites are the ones where Jean-Luc Picard, representing NeoGAF and console fanboys everywhere, vents his frustrations over “waggle’s” emergence and lagging PlayStation 3 sales.
