“The gaming industry seems to be on-the-fence about how they want to handle fan translations, but the fact that no one has said, ‘Hey, there is a legitimate business opportunity here,’ kind of surprises me.

We’ve got 30,000 people signed up to get an email when the translation is released; Nintendo’s marketing department would pay untold sums of money to get their hands on an email list that huge and highly targeted.

The fans have huge potential, which has gone largely ignored by the industry, something we’re hoping to change. Starmen.net has proven, beyond a doubt, that there is a giant pool of amazing talent in well-managed fan communities.”

Starmen.net’s Reid Young, a day before the Mother 3 English translation patch’s release, commenting on publishers ignoring the fan translation community.

The other big Starmen announcement: Mother 3 Handbook →

Along with today’s release of the Mother 3 English translation patch, the Starmen.net community revealed its plans to release the Mother 3 Handbook, a Earth bound companion to the GBA RPG.

In addition to the traditional walkthrough, the guide will feature eight chapters of original illustrations, photos of clay models, charts, maps, statistics, and game secrets. Starmen.net head Reid Young says that they might also include scratch-and-sniff trading cards with the handbook, just like the Earthbound Player’s Guide.

Expected to ship in January 2009, the Mother 3 Handbook is now available for preorder. Those who put in an early reservation ($20) will receive a custom-minted Courage Badge keychain and early PDF copies of each chapter.

Furthermore, Starmen.net will eventually release free, low-resolution copies of the guide online. You can download a sample PDF chapter from the site right now!

Mother 3 translation patch due this week →

Good news for those of you who’ve waited over two years to play Mother 3 in English, despite Nintendo of America’s reluctancy to release the RPG stateside. The fan translation patch has been completed:

“The patch will be out at the end of this week. Testing’s pretty much over now. Some bugs did turn up over the last few days, but they were all minor and quickly remedied. Some really hard-to-spot typos were also found and fixed.”

What will you need to play Mother 3 once the patch comes out? Well, a backed up Japanese ROM for starters, which can be obtained either illegally online or somewhat legally with a slot-2 flashcart and certain software.

Once you’ve applied the patch to the ROM, you should be able to play it in a variety of GBA emulators for PC/Mac and other devices, including PSP and maybe iPhone. You can also load it on a GBA/DS, provided that you have a slot-2 flashcart.

And now, we wait.

With the hacking phase now complete for Mother 3’s fan translation patch, project lead Tomato posted the above montage of various systems working as intended.

“Now that the hacking’s pretty much done (some miniscule things remain which may not be worth bothering with), that just leaves the testing phase. It’ll probably start sometime this weekend, and before people start asking, we don’t need help testing. The testing will be done internally for several weeks.”
