A screenshot from Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Can it be that it was all so simple then?

Strange Journey is one of the many DS RPGs released this year that I really intended to play but didn’t have the time or money for. Between this, Etrian Odyssey 3, The 4 Heroes Of Light, Infinite Space, Lufia, Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow, and Glory of Heracles, it’s well crossed the point where I can convince myself into believing that I’ll one day come back and spend time with all these games.

Buy: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey ($19.99)

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey trailer. It’s difficult to believe analysts when they describe the Nintendo DS as in its twilight years when you have titles like this, Infinite Space, Dragon Quest IX, Picross 3D, River City Soccer Hooligans, WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, and an ass-load of DSiWare releases to look forward to in the near future (well, DQIX will likely hit later in the year).

Does anyone else besides me think of Stargate — the first movie, not all the nonsense that followed it — whenever you hear the plot of SMT: Strange Journey?

“When the black spot appeared in the Antarctic, mankind became nervous; when it began to spread, that anxiety turned to panic. The Joint Project, convened to discuss how to deal with the expanding anomaly, decided to send in four ships carrying humanity’s finest soldiers and most cutting-edge technology. The mission: to investigate what lay on the other side of what had been dubbed the Schwarzwelt and find out if there was a way to stop it from eventually covering the Earth.

You are an elite soldier hand-picked for the Strike Team, outfitted with a Demonica environment suit and posted to the Red Sprite under Commander Gore. Upon entering the Schwarzwelt, the crew finds itself forced to deal with harsh conditions, supernatural interference, and throngs of demons populating the bewildering world.”

It’s a loose analogy but one I can’t shake.

As promised, Shiren the Wanderer 3’s boxart remains intact for its North American release next Spring, though Atlus did use a questionable Papyrus knockoff for “The Wanderer”. I showed JC the new cover, and he responded, “Looks like Shiren: The Crocodile Hunter”.

The new packaging art also uses a lame gradient effect on the logo — the original gradient was much more attractive. What’s up with Atlus and its terrible logo gradients lately, anyway? Here’s SMT: Strange Journey’s U.S. box:

Did Atlus travel back in time and hire a new artist fresh from the 1994 U.S. anime industry?

Back to Shiren the Wanderer 3, you might have heard that publisher Spike is porting the roguelike to PSP with six new dungeons and balance changes. I hope Atlus will include those additions with the Wii verson’s U.S. localization!

Preorder: Shiren the Wanderer Wii ($39.99)

English Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey screenshots and art, released with Atlus’s announcement that it will publish the game in North America in spring 2010.

I’m not going to lie; I only posted these because I found it hilarious that Atlus named its hero Shabadoo (no relation to Joey Joe-Joe Junior Shabadoo) when capturing the screenshots. Also, the guy with the buffalo head and teal pants seemed worth sharing.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey screenshot.

What is going on in this encounter? The flaming pair and vogue-ing Kratos with his purple, frilly collared, and bellbottomed jumpsuit are odd enough, but there’s also a crocodile and a monoplane just chillin’ in the background. All of this atop a checkered floor — an odd choice for a dungeon with these sorts of characters and attractions.

In other first-person RPG news, Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, to my surprise, doesn’t look terrible! It reminds me a lot of Hexen/Heretic:
