3DS is strap ambidextrous

Today, Eric and I were discussing one of our biggest concerns about the new Nintendo 3DS hardware: that we wouldn’t be able to attach wrist straps on it.

This would be terrible because not only would we risk dropping our expensive-ass systems, Eric wouldn’t be able to accessorize with the Game Center CX charm I gave him. It would also mark the end of the thumbstrap thingy that shipped with the original DS “Phat.”

Upon closer inspection, however, we discovered that the 3DS still accommodates straps and charms — the holes have just moved from their spot on the upper-right corner of the system. In fact, the 3DS offers two options for strap attachment, either on the lower-left corner (under the SD slot) or on the lower-right (next to the power light).

Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations Rubber Strap Collection. Volume 1, including ten characters from the main AA series, will be out in Japan this May, and volume 2 with Ace Attorney Investigations characters will be out in June. Yes, that means that if you buy a (¥5,000) box of the first set available, there won’t be an Edgeworth or Gumshoe in it. Which is unfortunate.

Less unfortunate, however, is the fact that these are SO CUTE. So. Cute. If they’re importable individually (they’ll sell for ¥500 yen each in Japan) I might end up with some more straps I don’t do anything with. The box sets can be preordered at Amiami (vol. 1, 2).

Rockman Dot Strap Collection Vol. 1, a set of phone (or DS or whatever!) straps bearing little sprites of Mega Man characters. E-Capcom is selling these as a set for ¥3,598, sparing Japanese consumers the shame of buying blind boxes and getting Eddie/Beat straps over and over again.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn “fuwa-moko” (“soft and fluffy”) strap. This adorable knit Kirby strap is packed in with the February issue of Nintendo Dream magazine, which… I don’t know how to import. Cat not included!

Come to think of it, that looks like it would be a great cat toy. Is it sadistic to let your cat bite and kick a tiny, defenseless Kirby? Or does doing something to your cat outweigh being mean to a fictional character?

Animal-themed DS cartridge cases! How frickin’ cute are these accessories? Each one looks like a different creature: cats, mice, frogs, bears, koalas, and pigs.

The cases sell for around ¥580 each (around $6.39), and while they only hold one cart, they also come with a matching trinket that doubles as a stylus (e.g. a tail for the cat, a tadpole for the frog).

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker screen cleaning strap, the latest awesome unlicensed accessory from DealExtreme. Just $2.16! Also available: Sonic, LittleBigPlanet, GTA Chinatown Wars, Harvest Moon, and Nintendogs.

No idea if there would be any unforeseen side effects from buying a knockoff phone strap. Although it’s morbidly funny to imagine it smearing some kind of residue on your screen or bursting into flame, it’ll probably just fall apart after a while.

The best game you’re not playing right now (unless you’re also not playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii).

Maestro is a lot more fun than I anticipated, and I had very high expectations for the rhythm platformer when I popped the cart in, especially after watching these gameplay clips. Unfortunately, it’s only out in Europe (with no U.S. plans announced yet), so you’ll need to import the title from some online retailer if you want to see how great it is.

Also, how awesome is my Game Center CX charm? (previously seen in this post) Thanks, JC!

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva straps, featuring Professor Layton, young Luke, Flora, and new character Remi. Complete sets will ship from NCSX in December for around twenty bucks.

I’m just glad to see some Layton stuff actually being available. There was a booth full of Nintendo toys at TGS, displaying these awesome Layton plushes, which weren’t actually available yet. How great would it be to have a tiny Layton patronizing you and chiding you for not being gentlemanly?

Bad decision made better: Mega Man DS accessories for $15 →

It’s kind of dumb to buy a $20 DS accessory kit just for the Mega Man screen-cleaning strap, but now that GameStop has shaved $5 off of the DS Lite Mega Man Star Force 3 kit, it’s … kind of slightly less dumb. But that’s what I do here: talk about bad purchasing decisions that I usually don’t actually make!

The DSi version appears to be sold out online — I can’t tell if it’s been dropped as well.

It’s not an entirely terrible purchase, as it comes with a case, stylus, storage for three games, etc.
