Blaster Master’s Sophia the Third in Super Mario Bros. Crossover! This addition makes the game look much easier, what with the ability to hang from the ceiling and shoot Bowser in the face, but, oh, the novelty of wrecking enemies with a hovering tank and its multi-warhead missiles!

Coder Jay Pavlina intends to release the Blaster Master update for Super Mario Bros. Crossover later this month. Someone turn this into a DS game already!

Commercial for Atlantis no Nazo. This ad almost makes the game look like an exciting, normal game instead of the spiderweb of hidden crap it really is. Also, GOBLIN.

[Note from Eric: The Game Center CX episode for this game is worth seeking out, though Fuji TV might have stamped out all the YouTube/Crunchyroll uploads for it]

Super Pitfall II vs. Atlantis no Nazo →

Not only did Activision localize the weird Famicom platformer (and early Game Center CX challenge) Atlantis no Nazo as Super Pitfall II, the company actually edited gameplay elements of the game before… failing to release it.

In a wonderful Dream and Friends post, Danny Cowan examines some of the changes made to Super Pitfall II, from the necessary (changing a goroawase clue to just numbers) to the kind of random (removing secret items). In general, any time I read about Atlantis no Nazo, it’s fascinating, as it’s a game riddled with semi-nonsensical secrets.

Sound Boy: NCSX Deal of the Week →

NCSX is offering new-in-box units of the Sunsoft Sound Boy, an external speaker for original DMG Game Boys. This item is perfect for chiptuners! Perfect for making the Game Boy a tiny bit louder, in case you’re playing for… I don’t know, a very small crowd in a room with you. Maybe a crowd sharing a couch with you. If the TV isn’t on.

If you’re more interested in seeing this item than hearing it, there’s a lovely photo gallery (from which the photo above originates) on Game Boy Carts.

Sunsoft’s Ufouria: The Saga, an endearing NES platformer that released in Japan, Europe, and Australia but never North America. The game recently appeared with a new rating at Australia’s OFLC site, causing some to speculate that it’s headed to Virtual Console in that region and might eventually make it to the States.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, Ufouria is one of those fun platformers in which you can switch characters for different powers that you’ll need to progress. Lost Levels/1UP’s Frank Cifaldi described it as “Cutesy Metroid” and said it’s one of his absolute favorite games on the NES. That’s enough to get me excited for a U.S. release!

Alternate Fester’s Quest opening, by Everdraed. I’m sure you’ve all seen this by now, but I just don’t give a shit.

Arino and assistant director Tsuruoka sing along to The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido’s annoying music.

According to Game Center CX historian Ray Barnholt, Arino was trudging through this infamously difficult Famicom title from Sunsoft when AD Tsuruoka walked in with a page of lyrics found in the game’s strategy guide:

“He says that the game’s strategy guide has lyrics for the game’s annoying music, and encourages Arino to do some karaoke. Tsuruoka plays as Arino sings along. He’s not really putting himself into it, though.
Tsuruoka offers to try. He sings it well, but it’s kinda high — he’s trying too hard to go for that enka vibe, and Arino has to stop him since it’s just too hilarious. ‘JYUUri!’ Then they sing it together, and Arino still can’t stop laughing. Tsuruoka leaves, letting Arino continue.”

Alright, here’s your homework for the weekend: come up with lyrics to accompany a Game Center CX/Retro Game Challenge song (extra credit if it’s for Rally King and if it’s about my complete domination of the game).

Gameplay video for Mr. Gimmick, Sunsoft’s charming NES platformer released only in Japan and Scandinavia. The game looks fun, but I’m posting it because Retronauts’s Frank Cifaldi did a bang-up job producing the clip, making this not only the most informative video game playthrough I’ve ever sat through, but the best use of annotations I’ve seen yet on Youtube. Watch the entire playlist here (don’t miss the minecart section in part 2!).

I typically cannot listen to more than a few seconds of the longplay movies posted by talkative or preteen nerds on Youtube — though I love the way the kid in this Retro Game Challenge video sings, “This game is win! Very much win!” — so it’s nice to come across such a well-executed, annotated clip like this. Of course, it helps that Mr. Gimmick looks like one of the most fun and impressive Famicom/NES games I’ve never played.
