Another charming Super Mario 3D Land commercial starring Haruka Ayase. I’ve been wondering why I like these so much — I mean, they’re just advertisements, and it’s not like they demonstrate anything new or interesting about the game — and I think I’ve figured it out.

They’re like video versions of my DS Life/handholding posts, moments captured from a portable gamer’s life. I’ve been slacking off on sharing those lately, so I need to post more of them. That and chiptune tracks.

While Nintendo hires Haruka Ayase to hawk Super Mario 3D Land in Japan, we get… eShop hipster John. Who’s just as awkward as ever in this Valentine’s Day spot.

I actually like John (somehow), so it’s nice to see him kinda paired with an alterna-girl here. I guess things didn’t work out with that Samsung Galaxy S II lady.

Super Mario 3D Land Enemy Collection keychains. One of the best things about Super Mario 3D Land is that you can count on pretty much every enemy to dress up in a raccoon tail at some point, whether it makes sense or not. A Bullet Bill with a tail on is both adorable and surprisingly tricky. If you want the full set, you can pre-order it from HLJ at a discounted price of around $15.

I’ve just realized that the Mario games have led me to a lifestyle in which I believe it makes sense for some creatures to wear a false raccoon tail, but not others.

Another Super Mario 3D Land commercial featuring Japanese actress and Oppai Volleyball star Haruka Ayase, playing video games in bed and eating a clementine.

New Japanese commercial for Super Mario 3D Land starring actress/idol Haruka Ayase. This is the handheld gaming experience — spending a quiet afternoon slouching in a chair, knees up, talking to yourself and making weird noises as you guide characters around a tiny screen.

Looking at Ayase’s filmography, I saw she was in a hilariously titled Japanese movie called Oppai Volleyball, which I found this amusing description for:

“Haruka Ayase stars as a newly-transferred 23-year-old teacher who takes over coaching of her new school’s volleyball team, only to discover the squad’s 5 players are all geeks who are too preoccupied with girls to bother practicing. Without realizing quite how effective it would ultimately be, she somehow gets roped into promising to show her ‘oppai’ (breasts) if they win a game, turning the boys into highly-dedicated sportsmen overnight.”

She was also in Kwak Jae-yong’s (My Sassy Girl) Cyborg She, which I hear was good but haven’t checked out yet.

“The Mario Drawing Song.” This Flipnote drawing tutorial, with original vocal music, was released on the Nintendo Channel a year ago. So why post it now?

Check out this lovely song from Special World 8 of Super Mario 3D Land:

I guess Nintendo borrowed a song from the in-development SM3DL for that Flipnote! And a year ago, we had no idea we were getting a preview of its soundtrack. How fun!

Super Mario Balance Block by Media Factory. It’s like Jenga, with ?-blocks, bricks, and … what do you call the empty blocks? It also has a little mushroom and a Mario-on-a-stick to push blocks out with.

This is even more 3D than Super Mario 3D Land! Garaaaan!

Editorial: Lay of the 3D Land →

Many years ago (two), I wrote for a small video game blog called Joystiq, contributing stories to its now defunct satellite sites. My byline hasn’t appeared there for some time now, but if you took a break from the turkey festivities yesterday to check the site, you’d have caught a new article from me that will be of interest to you.

In the editorial, I talk at length about how Super Mario 3D Land is the “Avatar of 3DS games”, and why developers shouldn’t struggle to match its stereoscopic 3D feats. While it’s a topic I’ve discussed briefly here before, you should read it anyway, as it was an excuse to gush about Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars ($13.99 right now!) once again on a major outlet.

Super Mario Hard Pouch, Protect Cover, and Protect Filter for 3DS, by Hori. It’s curious that both Hori and Keys Factory released non-Super Mario 3D Land-themed Mario accessories concurrent with that game.

That ?-block skin is so neat — why does it have to come with a Mario Party group portrait on the front? I don’t want to decorate my 3DS with Waluigi.

Penny-Arcade on Super Mario 3D Land’s Invincibility Leaf (click for a larger image with legible text):

“Upon missing that same jump that you missed many times previously, you may find that a magical leaf has been provided.

This leaf is a kind of Super Tanooki Suit, which transforms you into a kind of sparkling megaraccoon which cannot be harmed. You don’t have to take it. You can just leave it there and continue to fail again and again, as you have so miserably.  But the strong implication is that you need this leaf very badly.

You will most likely accept it, but you won’t like it; you’ll resent the leaf. You’ll feel the leer of a Koopa Troopa hot on your neck, its beak curled in disgust. You’ll get to the end, you’ll get the flag; you’ll tick your adventure forward one Standard Destiny Unit (SDU). But a taste will accompany the proceedings.

This taste will be bitter.”

I love that smarmy Goomba on the bottom right of the second panel: “Don’t jump on me, Mario.”

NMA interprets the PETA vs Super Mario Bros. debacle. You’ve likely read about this already from other outlets — which is why we passed on covering it ourselves — but I love how the Taiwanese firm breaks down the silliness of it all in this new CGI-animated report.

The little inaccuracies of the video are great, too — how are two people playing Super Mario Bros. (NES) at the same time? Or Super Mario 3D Land (on a Wii no less)? And how did Mario score a Tanooki leaf in World 1-1 of the original Super Mario Bros.?

Super Mario 3D Land all up in this piece

Having spent quite a few hours with Super Mario 3D Land (I’m now making my way through the second half of the game), I considered typing up a Tiny Review for the title, but there’s really no point since Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan and our own JC Fletcher have already hit all the points, left no Star Medal uncollected, and Gold Flagged everything as far as reviews go.

Instead, as the game releases today, I’ll just make this statement: Super Mario 3D Land is the best original Super Mario Bros. game on a handheld in more than 15 years.

Have you picked it up yet? What do you think about it so far? What are your favorite details and stages, or what parts do you think are butt?
