Tiny Cartridge 3DS

Some kind of new Kid Icarus: Uprising content hitting Nintendo Zone ⊟
I don’t know what it is, but there’s SOME kind of Kid Icarus stuff coming to the Nintendo Zone public download stations in North America this October and November, as announced in this morning’s Nintendo Direct. “Additional content for Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Mario 3D Land, as well as special Gold Pants Mii character distributions, will become available later this year,” Nintendo’s follow-up press release notes.
If this is more, like, actual game content for these games, I’m going to scream. In either case, I think our elite Kid Icarus guild, Garfield & Friends, is due to reunite and reassert our dominance over all other would-be Kids Icarus.

Flame Red 3DS variants

Turns out the Flame Red 3DS included with that Super Mario 3D Land bundle is different from the one released on its own! As pictured in this photoset by manderpants, the bundle version lacks the silver bar around the cartridge slot, isn’t as reflective, and is just plain a different color.

It doesn’t even have the three-tone layering effect! I thought that was a 3DS signature look.

Anyway, it’s a little different. Sorry, collectors…

Nintendo 3DS + Super Mario 3D Land's Black Friday bundle. The system, which comes with a pre-installed copy for one of the best games released last year, is priced at $170 — not bad since that's how much the handheld usually costs alone, and the game typically sells for $40.
Of course, if you visit this site on the reg and don’t already have a 3DS plus a copy of Super Mario 3D Land, I wonder where we went wrong…

It’s Super Mario 3D Land for iPhones! Er, or rather a game that has the enemies, power-ups, and stage elements that are nearly identical to Nintendo’s game… It’s actually called 3D Cartoon Land: Safari, and is made by Walnut JZ, the same people behind other iOS classics like God of Warriors and Fury Birds.

According to Walnut JZ, “This unique game requires you to quickly jump over obstacles and collect coins. But you are not secure in this beautiful cartoon world. An angry tortoise could bite you. An easy and smooth control makes it very funny and to jump or run.”

The next Super Mario 3D Land could look like this, if Nintendo modeled it after the quirky second game in the original NES series. That’s unlikely, but if Super Mario Bros. 2 taught us anything, it’s that a fellow can dream!
This mock-up comes from @pokecapn, and is based on the clean version Bill Mudron illustrated without all the 3DS screen’s quirks (e.g. ghosting, lines, etc.)

Korean Super Mario 3D Land commercials, released for the recent Korean launch of the 3DS. Two things: first, I guess I never paid much attention to the Cobalt Blue 3DS, but it looks way nice!

Second, I love every commercial in which a celebrity puts on a Mario moustache. Like this one, a true classic:

Long-legged Mario, one of many scrapped ideas Koichi Hayashida and his team tried out for Super Mario 3D Land. The problem with this concept? It was too scary! He’s starting to look too much like that creeper Waluigi in these mock-up images from EmCeeGramr.

Christian Nutt has a great write-up of Hayashida’s inspiring talk about Super Mario 3D Land at the Game Developers Conference yesterday. Definitely give it a read.

Another charming Super Mario 3D Land commercial starring Haruka Ayase. I’ve been wondering why I like these so much — I mean, they’re just advertisements, and it’s not like they demonstrate anything new or interesting about the game — and I think I’ve figured it out.

They’re like video versions of my DS Life/handholding posts, moments captured from a portable gamer’s life. I’ve been slacking off on sharing those lately, so I need to post more of them. That and chiptune tracks.

While Nintendo hires Haruka Ayase to hawk Super Mario 3D Land in Japan, we get… eShop hipster John. Who’s just as awkward as ever in this Valentine’s Day spot.

I actually like John (somehow), so it’s nice to see him kinda paired with an alterna-girl here. I guess things didn’t work out with that Samsung Galaxy S II lady.

Super Mario 3D Land Enemy Collection keychains. One of the best things about Super Mario 3D Land is that you can count on pretty much every enemy to dress up in a raccoon tail at some point, whether it makes sense or not. A Bullet Bill with a tail on is both adorable and surprisingly tricky. If you want the full set, you can pre-order it from HLJ at a discounted price of around $15.
I’ve just realized that the Mario games have led me to a lifestyle in which I believe it makes sense for some creatures to wear a false raccoon tail, but not others.

New Japanese commercial for Super Mario 3D Land starring actress/idol Haruka Ayase. This is the handheld gaming experience — spending a quiet afternoon slouching in a chair, knees up, talking to yourself and making weird noises as you guide characters around a tiny screen.

Looking at Ayase’s filmography, I saw she was in a hilariously titled Japanese movie called Oppai Volleyball, which I found this amusing description for:

"Haruka Ayase stars as a newly-transferred 23-year-old teacher who takes over coaching of her new school’s volleyball team, only to discover the squad’s 5 players are all geeks who are too preoccupied with girls to bother practicing. Without realizing quite how effective it would ultimately be, she somehow gets roped into promising to show her ‘oppai’ (breasts) if they win a game, turning the boys into highly-dedicated sportsmen overnight."

She was also in Kwak Jae-yong’s (My Sassy Girl) Cyborg She, which I hear was good but haven’t checked out yet.
