Super Famicom Nintendo DS mod mock-up by Rokujo Ikken (click for a larger image). This is something a talented modder could actually make, right? One of you needs to buy a Pure White DS Phat, swap in colored buttons and a gray back, pull off some Ben Heck-style hardware hacking, and send that bad boy to me.

VI-Day: Dragon Quest VI hits U.S. on Feb 14

As a Valentine’s Day present to all those ardent Dragon Quest fans out there, Nintendo announced that it’s publishing DQVI: Reals of Revelation (a.k.a. Realms of Reverie) in North America on February 14th.

Originally released for the Super Famicom 15 years ago, this is the last main Dragon Quest title that hasn’t made it to the West yet. Check out the Japanese North American trailer for this DS remake after the break:

“Classic Commercial” for Donkey Kong Country Returns in Japan. Perhaps compelled by the popularity of its Japanese Super Mario 25th Anniversary ad from two months ago, Nintendo created another one of these nostalgia-exploiting spots (minus the “cassette fufu”).

I wonder if this will be a thing for all of the company’s revivals? Will next year’s Kid Icarus: Uprising for 3DS have a commercial with floppy slipped into a Famicom Disk System? And will StarFox 64 3D’s ad show a chunky gray cartridge pushed into an N64?

Mock-ups of Classic Controllers skinned after classic consoles. That NES concept is a bit rough, but the SNES/SFC designs are aces — I might want one of those over Club Nintendo’s official SFC Classic Controller.

Ultimate 16bit Machine Super Famicom shirts from The King of Games, available in white and gray.

These tees commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Super Famicom’s release in Japan, which is coming up this November! The shop taking preorders for the shirts right now, pricing each one at ¥5,500 ($62) before shipping.

While we’re on the topic of throwback tees, Club Nintendo in Japan added some fresh designs for its loyal customers/members. Ever the pessimist, I don’t expect Club Nintendo to offer the shirts in other regions — and if they do, it’s unlikely they will have as many artwork options or the interchangeable colors/elements.

SNES Boy by NeX. This mod, as its name suggests, stuffs a car’s in-dash screen and parts from a Japanese Super Famicom Jr. into a Game Boy, all powered by a 4.8v rechargeable battery. The hacked portable still uses the Game Boy’s original controls, amplifier, regulator board, volume control, power switch, and speaker.

Though the handheld only has two buttons, you can still play a few SNES/SFC games like Bomberman and R-Type without any problems, and NeX added an adapter so you can plug up to two SNES controllers into the back. Insane! And he hasn’t even finished working on it yet!

Famicom Collector cart shown off by Pokemon developer Game Freak in a short post about making your own Famicom cartridge labels. I’m sure I’m not the only one here who wishes a Famicom game about collecting obscure 8-bit releases really existed. It would be even more brilliant if all the games you have to find are made-up titles like Devil Cop and School’s Out For Blood.

Speaking of modified carts, how rad is this Super Famiphone (forged by GBA Touch maker Goteking)?:

So rad. I’m almost reconsidering my decision to buy a Palm Pre Plus from Verizon next week!

Arino the Wanderer Part 2 →

One last set of videos for today, though you’ll need to travel to an external site to watch them, as I’m having a difficult time embedding these Dailymotion clips.

In this second-half of Game Center CX’s latest two-part challenge, show host Shinya Arino continues his quest to complete the original Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for Super Famicom. Even if you don’t understand Japanese, so long as you’ve played a little Shiren and have a grasp of the game’s basic mechanics, you should have no trouble following the episode.

Now that your belly’s full of turkey and other fixins, why not close your Thanksgiving by watching Arino learn (the hard way, naturally) why you should kill Skull Wraiths as quickly as possible? Or by enjoying his reaction when he realizes a monster levelled up just a few spaces away from him? Will he manage to complete this notoriously difficult roguelike? Watch and find out!

As with the last episode, Arino takes a break and plays several Game Boy titles, one of which is Meldac’s curious shoot’em up Mercenary Force. I’d never heard of the game  before, but this shit looks banoodles.

Import: Game Center CX 2

Buy: Retro Game Challenge ($19.49), Shiren the Wanderer DS ($13.39!!!)

Arino the Wanderer (and Panty Winner)

Oh, joy! Two of our favorite things, Game Center CX and Shiren the Wanderer, combined! This is even better than the time I discovered that leftover, heated up cornbread makes for a delicious breakfast with cream cheese.

In this latest episode from the Japanese program that inspired Retro Game Challenge, show host Shinya Arino plays through Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer for Super Famicom. As fans of the roguelike series should know by now, this is the release Shiren the Wanderer DS was based on, so if you played that handheld remake, you’ll have a good idea of what’s going here.

Arino dies during his attempt to complete the main adventure, which is expected considering the game’s infamous difficulty. He makes a lot of rookie mistakes even late into the dungeon, like chasing after Mini Tanks in a straight line (you should approach them by walking in diagonals to avoid getting hit). Also, it’s amusing to see Oryu get the best of him when they first meet.

The GCCX host eventually takes a break to visit a local arcade where he bowls, plays Gals Panic S2, and wins a pair of girl’s underwear from a crane game. Scandalous!

New trailer for Brandish 2: The Motherfucking Planet Buster. If this trailer, featuring the motivational power of random hockey clips and Ravi Drums, doesn’t get you totally pumped about an unofficially-translated Falcom RPG, then either you didn’t watch it or you are a bitch and are wisely staying away.

Brandish 2 SFC English patch released →

Almost fifteen years since its release in Japan for the Super Famicom, Falcom’s Brandish 2: The Planet Buster is finally playable in English, thanks to a patch released today by Synchronicity Translations.

Unfamiliar with Brandish but still curious to play a 16-bit dungeon crawler that never made it to the States? HG101’s piece on the series is an excellent starting point.

According to Synchronicity, the translated script is “absolutely 100% faithful to the original”. And the game, from what I hear, is also absolutely “not for bitches”.

On a related note, I love Brandish 2’s PC98 box!

[Thanks, denpanosekai!]

Shiren DS 2 translation on hold as work on Torneko GBA roguelike begins →

After releasing a v0.2 patch last September, Xvirus took a break from his Shiren DS 2 translation efforts, citing difficulties with replacing the Japanese dialogue:

“The main reason that it was put on hold was that there were odd things happening when I translated the dialogue. I’m not sure how it happened, but after I translated the dialogue in a building, it would lock you in there and let you clip through walls.

There has been some more work done on the game though, particularly with the in-dungeon text. I just think it needs to be a bit more polished before a new version gets put out.”

The v0.2 patch is still useful even without any dialogue or monster/item descriptions, as most of the menus, monsters names, and item names are translated. Almost half of the in-game messages are also in English. It’s your best option for playing Shiren DS 2 for now, lest Atlus decides to pick it up for North America like it did with Shiren 3.

In Shiren DS 2’s stead, Xvirus is working on another project that fans of Chunsoft roguelikes will appreciate: Dragon Quest Characters: Torneko no Daibouken 3 Advance. Starring Dragon Quest IV’s lovable shopkeeper Taloon (Torneko), the GBA game has the merchant exploring dungeons for items to stock his store with.

This is the last untranslated Torneko roguelike. The first Super Famicom game, which you might recognize from John Harris’s magnificent playthrough diaries, spawned the Mystery Dungeon series and received a fan translation. The second Torneko title, released to PS1 and GBA, somehow made it to the States as Torneko: The Last Hope (only the PS1 version, though).

Xvirus’s team, Orenji Translations, is looking for help with the Torneko 3 patch, so if you have any Japanese translation skills, please volunteer them for this project!

One last bit of roguelike news — look at what came in the mail, courtesy of JC and his recent Tokyo trip:

It’s the original Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer! It has a “2” on it because this is the second Mystery Dungeon title, following right after the first Torneko game. Now, all I need is a Super Famicom to play this with.

Import: Shiren the Wanderer DS 2 ($48.90)

Preorder: Shiren the Wanderer Wii ($39.99)

Buy: Shiren the Wanderer DS ($17.99)
