Super Mario Bros. (VC) ambassador update

Nintendo has put out some weird updates for eShop titles lately, and many have had trouble identifying what they add to their respective games. That’s not the case with the Super Mario Bros. update for those who downloaded the NES game as part of the 3DS Ambassador program.

The obvious change, as you can see in the image above, is the new menu icon, which replaces the generic box with an NES, a TV, and a shot of the screen. It also adds save states (tap screen) and a digital manual for the game.

Nintendo hasn’t announced this week’s downloadable games yet, but early reports indicate that they will be iSpot Japan on DSiWare (200 Points), Strider on Wii Virtual Console (Genesis, 800 Points), and the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D demo on eShop (Free).

It’s also likely that Super Mario Bros. will be made available to non-Ambassadors now, making it the first NES game offered for sale on the 3DS Virtual Console in the States. There are reports, too, that Dillon’s Rolling Western releases next week in Europe — maybe we’ll get it in North America at the same time!

New 2D Super Mario coming to 3DS

In a meeting with investors today, Nintendo CEO and president Satoru Iwata announced that the company intends to put out a new 2D Super Mario title for 3DS some time between March 2012 - March 2013 (I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s toward the end of the period).

His exact statement:

“We are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.”

He did not provide any additional details or media beyond that, so it’s up to you to speculate on what this will be. Finally a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2 (US)? Or could it be a continuation of the New Super Mario Bros. line? Whatever it is, my body is Reggie.

“Super Totoro Bros” by Lukas Stobie (click for a larger image). These suits won’t enable you to turn into a statue or whack enemies with a tail. The only power you’ll pick up is the ability to fill your heart with warmth and wonder and everything that ever made you smile as a child.

Figure for Heinlad, one of the Transformers from Japan-only animated series Beast Wars Neo. I came across this guy while searching for Tanooki images yesterday.

Check out his Wikipedia description:

“Heinlad usually acts dazed and vague, often talking with a lazy and nonchalant style. He has a clock in his stomach, which gives him the ability to manipulate time.

His super secret skill is being able to stop or stretch time for a limited duration, but there’s a flaw in this ability: he still can’t control it at will. Heinlad’s past and combat abilities are surrounded in mystery. …

His beast mode is also unique, being based upon the tanuki or raccoon dog animal. The most notable feature of said animal was amazingly large testes which, according to Japanese legend, the tanuki used as both seat and as drums. This trait is reflected on the toy as two round objects right underneath his clock belly that become hip pads in robot mode, one of which contains his spark crystal.”

Inafune isn’t actually the father of Mega Man — he’s said before that his mentor at Capcom (likely Akira Kitamura) designed the character. Inafune made Zero, though!

Disk-kun Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch. This special edition Game & Watch, inside a case shaped like the Famicom Disk System mascot, was given away to high scorers in a Famicom Grand Prix F-1 Race contest. 

Since the contest has long since ended, and you’d have no shot against whatever dudes have been playing Famicom Grand Prix since 1987, there’s no way to get one of these for yourself. Unless someone were to put one on eBay, like has been done right here.

Unfortunately, there’s something of a high score contest going there, too. The current bid is at $1225.

Super Mario Bros. 1-1 recreated as a Demon Returns stage. This is only a slice of the full level Tiny Cartridge reader Zachary Robinson laid out — see it all right here.

Demon Returns, of course, is the Ghosts ‘n Goblins / Adventure Island-style platformer included in Game Center CX 2, an import-only game we’ve hyped so much that it will likely never meet your immense expectations.

Two things about Game Center CX 2:

  1. There might be a translation project in the works — it all depends on whether or not Japanese translators man up and volunteer their services. Like men.
  2. I popped in the used copy of GCCX 2 (perfect condition, even has Arino’s business card) that JC bought my the other day, and discovered the most amazing thing — the previous owner already unlocked all the games! I’m trying to collect every letter in Super Demon Returns now.

Things are looking up for GCCX2.

“Chung-chung-chung”. Along with mentioning the new Super Mario Bros. game coming to Nintendo 3DS and Koji Kondo holding out for Shigeru Miyamoto’s approval after 25 years, the latest “Super Mario 25th Anniversary” Iwata Asks session has this fun moment:

Kondo: Mario sort of  flashes as he gets bigger, so I made that sound effect to match. And to save memory, I needed to get a lot of use out of the same sounds. So, for example, I used  the same sound for when he gets smaller and when he goes into pipes.

Miyamoto: When he goes into pipes, it goes chung-chung-chung. I bet you hadn’t noticed they were the same.

Iwata: Oh, I guess they are.

Kondo: And the bwip! sounds when he steps on turtles and swims are the same.

Iwata: They seemed different in my head, but I guess they’re the same!

Kondo: That was all to save memory.

It’s not as mind-blowing as Super Mario Bros.’ identical clouds/bushes — most of you probably already recognized the sounds were re-used — but I like hearing about all the tricks game developers depended on to get the most from memory/hardware limitations.

Gloves fashioned after Bloopers (those squid-things from Super Mario Bros.) by Omonomopoeia. They’re made of white fleece and black felt, and are perfect for terrifying plumbers as they swim under you.

This seems like such an obvious idea, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any craftsters make a pair! If you want one, Omonomopoeia is selling the gloves in its Etsy shop for $15 (+$5 shipping) with customizable expressions.

French take on Japan’s nostalgic Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary commercial, switched up a bit to feature the NES and push copies of Super Mario All-Stars.

It’s not nearly as great as the original TV spot, but its the first/only Western version of the ad I’ve seen. Also, note the lack of “cassette fufu” in this version.
