Yes, one more post about a Super Mario Bros. romhack! This time it’s for New Super Mario Bros. 3, a fanmade game that recreates the levels of NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3 through a patch for New Super Mario Bros. DS.
As you can see in the extended trailer above, developer SKJmin has not only dropped in all eight worlds from Super Mario Bros 3., but also the stages from other Mario and non-Mario titles (e.g. Metroid). There’s some original levels in the patch, too. What you won’t get in this homebrew release are power-ups from the original games, so don’t expect to rock that shit with Kuribo’s shoe. :o(
While the patch requires a ROM of New Super Mario Bros., we advise you to not pirate the game and obtain this digital copy through legal means — though the legality of current methods are still up for debate.
“Hatsukoi” from Mayumi Kojima. I’ve always wondered about the enchanting music that played in this brilliant Japanese commercial for Super Mario Advance 4 (Super Mario Bros. 3 re-release for GBA):
Thanks to Fuck Yeah GBA, I now have a name and artist to associate with the tune!
“Funny, Super Mario Bros. 3 never had to remind me to play it.”
Gamasutra commenter on the exodus of players from FarmVille and other social games after Facebook disabled “notification spam” from apps on the social network.
If you missed it, earlier this week, Bill Mooney, vice president at FarmVille developer Zynga, said with a straight face, “More people have played FarmVille than have played Mario”. To which Winnie the Pooh replied:
One-of-a-kind Scott Pilgrim DS Phat up for auction. Dugless42069 approached Bryan Lee O’Malley some time in 2006 and asked the Scott Pilgrim creator to doodle his hero, in Super Mario Bros. 3/Super Leaf form, on a DS.
O’Malley obliged, and now Dugless42069 is selling the personalized portable on eBay — with five days left to go, the listing has already attracted 13 bids, with the top bid at $305! The winner of the auction will not only receive the system, but the feather stylus that came with copies of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.
You know what would be cooler than a Scott Pilgrim DS? If Ubisoft released the upcoming Scott Pilgrim video game on DS. The system needs an 8-bit-style, 2D brawler!
The “P” in Super Mario Bros. 3’s P-Wing stands for “Paratroopa”, as in Paratroopa Wing. Mind blown.
Almost as surprising — Nintendo veteran Toshihiko Nakago revealed in a recent interview with company president Satoru Iwata (the same Q&A that betrayed the above secret) that he shared a bed with legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto on more than one occasion:
Arino’s Super Mario Bros. 3 challenge, Virtual Console commercial. The Game Center CX host is yelling “heta” (“unskillfulness”) while trying to hop onto the Goombas for the World 1-2 1UP trick. And at the end of the clip, he admits, “The kacho is not good at games!”
He actually took on the same challenge during the show’s second season, and though Arino failed to complete SMB 3 after playing for 18 hours, he was able to pull off the 1UP trick after 39 tries. Not trying to brag, but my wife is like 80 million times better than Arino at SMB 3. Seriously, she’s a genius at the game (while I’m terrible at it).

Not as life-changing as the original Super Mario Bros.’s clouds/bush discovery, but just as astonishing as SMB 2’s surprise ending. This requires further investigation.
