Tiny Cartridge

If you ever wanted to send messages to Swapnote’s mascot Nikki, you sort of can now — some young lass has set up a Tumblr blog for the green sweatered character.

There’s an Ask form for submitting questions, and if Nikki likes them (and if they’re not inappropriate queries that make her blush), she’ll post a sketch response. Neat!

At first, we thought of a character who would drift in all of a sudden like a balloon. Later there was something like a combination of a bird and a ghost. That was actually a final candidate!

It was actually cute, but it looked pretty freaky. It could write a note for you, so it had something like hands, too. Maybe that was something else middle-aged! (laughs).

Motomasa Kondo, Swapnote lead designer, reveals an early version of the Swapnote mascot in a new Iwata Asks interview. I doubt we’d have the same volume of fanart of the drawing bird-ghost!

The piece is full of embarrassing notes about how “middle-aged” the program was turning out until Nintendo and developer Denyu-sha brought some younger people, women in particular, to work on it.

It’s also interesting that Swapnote was originally planned as a DSiWare diary app with no networking! So just Note, then.

Freakyforms QR code for Swapnote’s Nikki. The 3DS’s messaging app mascot is everywhere nowadays — she’s in Mii Plazas, user photos (OMGGG), foot fetish fanart, and now Freakyforms! What next? A Pushmo puzzle? A cameo in Super Smash Bros. 3DS?? A guest verse on the remix for Birdman/Nicki Minaj/Lil’ Wayne’s “Y.U. MAD”?!?

Four Swapnotes for the new year, plus a very special message from Mare Odomo (click for larger images). These awesome sketches from Cory Godbey, Ashley Davis, Jonathan “Persona” Kim, and Hef helped me get over Nintendo not sending its Japanese New Year Swapnote — and its special stationary — to the rest of us.

Nintendo also posted an official QR code for Swapnote mascot Nikki in Japan. If you’d rather have her name in English text, IGN’s Lucas Thomas re-created her Mii here.

Do you know how you can tell that Swapnote and Nikki are really taking off? There is now foot fetish fanart for the fictional character. Is no Nintendo character safe?

“Swapnote RPG” by Ben Gray. Emergent gameplay is emerging! Using a series of text notes for gameplay text and the “graph paper” stationery for maps, Gray made a D&D style RPG playable entirely in Swapnote.

I basically like everything about this… I especially like the asynchronous nature. It’s like Words With Friends: The RPG. I’d imagine your Swapnote inbox would get full really quickly doing something like this, though.

Fanart for Swapnote’s Nikki by Happy Freshener. Wow, people love this app so much, they’re drawing tributes for this minor character from the Nintendo-verse. Of course, perverts have even made “sex” comics with her.
I know dudes want me to add them for Swapnote fun, but my Friends List is pretty much full right now!  And I need to stop inviting people to send me messages — as much as I enjoy them, it’s totally getting in my way of playing the other eShop stuff I’ve downloaded.
Like, with what little free time I have, I’ll sit down to play Mighty Switch Force, VVVVVV, or Pushmo, but nope, there’s two dozen new Swapnotes for me to check out first! And then there goes the rest of my night.

Swapnote Tinies, sent in to Eric and me. Truly, a hand-drawn representation of our mascot is the best expression of one’s feelings. Any feelings.

I’ve been absolutely delighted to check Swapnote and find tons of notes. Thank you all so much for including the two of us in your 3DS mailing lists! Actually having messages makes this thing so much more fun.

Thanks, Zero-chan, Lance, Axel, and Persona! And thanks, everyone else, for all the fun notes you’ve sent!

Swapnote trailer. I find the included tutorial images so cute, and the same style is in use here! Seriously, I skipped all the tutorials at first, then went back and watched them because “Nikki” and the drawings were so charming.

I’m kind of really excited about this goofy messaging app! I’m looking forward to idly sending silly animations back and forth to Eric as we work.

Swapnote is out on the U.S. eShop! Go download it for free, and start unlocking features/sending stuff to your friends. I expect you will heed this advice from Nikki (the application’s guide, whose name translates to “Diary” in Japanese), and send only non-offensive messages, just like you did with PictoChat that one time you used it.

Demonstration of Swapnote, the 3DS’s new messaging app releasing soon. It’s what we always wanted from PictoChat: an application on your portable for sending 3D messages, photos, and even bits of audio to your friends online. It took seven years, but it’s finally almost here.

This came out in Japan today as Itsuno ma ni Koukan Nikki, and releases this week to Europe’s eShop (along with Game Boy’s Tetris!) as Nintendo Letter Box. If we’re all good little girls and boys, maybe it’ll release in North America this week, too, just in time for us to send notes to people in our Friends List for the holidays.

Along with being able to pass messages to your friends (apparently there’s a mass send function, too) and people you encounter via StreetPass, you’ll also be able to just save your notes as a personal diary.

Trailer for Swapnote, an eShop app coming this December. It’s not quite PictoChat, not quite Flipnote Studio, but it is a new drawing and message app for 3DS. Somehow, you’ll be able to send 3D messages — I’m guessing by dropping 3D objects in, or maybe drawing in different layers.

And it supports both StreetPass and SpotPass, so E3 is basically going to be a massive dick-drawing exchange network.
