Let Us Sing Together again: Tactics Ogre →

I cannot stop thinking about the new Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together PSP remake, which is a terrible, terrible affliction for someone who does not own one of these Portable PlayStation devices — I know, I’m the last handheld gamer in the world without one.

1UP’s A+ review of the SRPG and Active Time Babble’s podcast discussion last week have further weakened my immune system, leaving me in a feverish state. My wife tells me that in my semi-consciousness last night, I cried out for archers to take the high ground, then communicated commands to an imagined unit of rogues via subtle but complex hand gestures.

I’m trying to forget Tactics Ogre’s release tomorrow by diving into another portable RPG remake that hits this week, Dragon Quest VI. The video embedded above, some kind of mash-up of Tactics Ogre and The Idolmaster, though, has been stuck in my head for the past week. Even the Dragon Quest overture cannot drown it out.

Tactics Ogre remake headed to PSP

Famitsu’s latest issue revealed a new title in development at Square Enix: Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fate for PSP. Why bother mentioning it here when it isn’t a DS title?

  • It’s a remake of Quest’s beloved Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, which originally released for Super Famicom (eventually coming to the States on the PS1), with new side stories, characters, and gameplay systems. Yasumi Matsuno, director of the original game, is working on the project.
  • The Tactics Ogre series, for those of you who don’t know, was the precursor to Final Fantasy Tactics, an SRPG franchise that seems to have a devoted fanbase on the GBA/DS side.
  • Akihiko Yoshida, who was behind the brilliant artwork for the Final Fantasy Tactics series and Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, will handle the remake’s character design.
  • It’s our site. If it sounds interesting to us, we get to write about it even if it isn’t relevant to the rest of the crap we usually post (e.g. Gun O’Clock).

Square Enix recently registered a grip of Tactics Ogre trademarks in the U.S. and Europe, too, so it’s likely Wheel of Fate is already slated to hit the West!

Tactics Idol: Let Us Sing Together (music starts at 01:20).

This odd, fan-made video melds Quest’s hallowed Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together with an inconceivable partner, Namco’s The Idolmaster.

I never knew that there was a need inside me to see a fantasy-combat SRPG combined with a pop idol group management sim, but now that I know that such a thing can exist, I can think of nothing else.

And god damn this song’s chorus is catchy. You can also see and hear the “Danketsu” track — taking in some context that will help you better understand the above clip — with this subtitled music video.
