Tiny Review: Space Invaders Get Even

I knew that I was going to love Space Invaders Get Even for its concept alone, as well as the words “Space” and “Invaders” in the title, but Taito pleasantly surprised me by delivering a game that I actually enjoy for real.
Three details about the game that are yaaaaay:
- The narration. From the game’s attract mode through each level, Get Even is always talking to you, either in the guise of a narrator or the radio chatter of the doomed hu-mans whose space you’re invading. The dialogue is all of the “unintentionally hilarious” variety, except I think it’s intentional. Which brings me to the second point:
- This game beautifully matches the Space Invaders series to ’60s sci-fi movie tropes. It was pretty easy to do, just by changing the perspective and showing exactly who is being Invaded.
- The episodic format. This is less an expensive WiiWare game as it is a cheap Wii game that you can buy and play without getting up. The format also means you’re only out five bucks if you hate it.
Three details that are less yaaaaay:
- The extra ships (based on the classic Invaders UFO and ships from Darius and RayStorm) are better than the main ship, and excluded from the leaderboards. Boo.
- The bosses who kill the most of your Invaders don’t really give you time to regenerate them (by shaking). I guess that’s balance, but why give me the feature if I can’t use it when I need to?
- The episodic format. Twenty dollars for this game isn’t bad, but it still kinda feels like really expensive WiiWare to me, just because it’s WiiWare. It will also destroy your storage space.
Score:
- Space Invaders ‘95: The Attack of Lunar Loonies/100
