Two minutes of Renegade 3DS gameplay. I know most previews for this import-only 3DS game are mixed, to say the least, but you’ll want to watch this anyway just to hear that remix of River City Ransom’s shop music again.

While I expect hardly anyone will buy this in Japan, I’m crossing my fingers that sales will meet expectations and Arc System Works will greenlight a similar remake for River City Ransom — I’d love to see this motorcycle sequence brought into that potential game.

Downtown Special: It’s Kunio’s Period Piece, Assemble Everyone!!, or Technos Samurai, patched with a new English translation released a couple months ago.

This Japan-only Famicom game was a follow-up to River City Ransom that had Kunio and friends acting out a period play taking place in Medieval Japan. I brought it up because, as you might have heard, Miracle Kidz is crafting a modern sequel to River City Ransom that will release for consoles in Japan this summer and on PCs next year.

Miracle Kidz, which is working with some ex-Technos staff, is the same doujin group that released River City Dodge Ball All Stars!! for PC and XBLIG not too long ago. The team is also releasing a WiiWare port for that dodgeball title to Japan in two months.

If we’re lucky, publishers will overlook that hardly anyone bought River City Soccer Hooligans or River City Super Sports Challenge last year, and will decide to localize these games in the U.S. anyway.

Someone playing River City Super Sports Challenge. Unlike River City Soccer Hooligans, the 3D engine makes sense for this game! I love the variety of environments with each screen; this looks way more fun than I expected.

Speaking of River City Soccer Hooligans, that game hit stores this week (just in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup), but you probably knew about that already, what with all the hype and promotions for it. :o/

There was a time when many would have murdered in cold blood (ironic considering the hot-blooded nature of the Kunio-kun series) for a sequel to Nintendo World Cup; what happened? Did the 3D engine turn them off? Was Super Dodgeball Brawlers so much of a disappointment that Kunio fans turned in their jackets? Perhaps today’s gamers just aren’t interested in seeing dudes punch each other and barf all over the place anymore?

What a sad world this has become, where gamers have outgrown Kunio-kun.

Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet re-appears, releases next February in Japan

I figured this game was dead, seeing as how we haven’t heard a thing about Kunio-Kun no Chou Nekketsu! Daiundoukai, or Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet, since last January. Arc System Works, however, just posted a bare teaser site for the game, announcing its Japanese release for February 4th, 2010.

From NCSX’s product description:

“Kunio and friends engage in various athletic events including track, hockey, soccer, and dodgeball. The sporting events are played without too many rules so punching and kicking are par for the course.”

The four-player game is modeled after Famicom/PCE/GB/GBA import Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku: Soreyuke Dai Undoukai, or Hot-Blooded Marching Anthem: Go Go! Big Athletic Meet. Unlike Arc System Works’s other recent Kunio remake for the DS, Super Dodgeball Brawlers, though, this game is presented in butt-ass 3D.

Aksys localizes pretty much everything Arc System Works puts out in Japan, so it would surprise me if I didn’t hear this eventually announced for the U.S. You can hear a short audio sample from the game on its official site.

Crash ‘n the Boys: Street Challenge Japanese commercial.

This odd “sports” competition NES game for hit the U.S.’s Virtual Console service today, and while its title might sound discouraging and its boxart might look god awful, it’s really fun, trust me! It’s also a Kunio-kun game, which is always appreciated around here.

You know a game is worth paying attention to when someone went out of their way to create a Made in Ore (WarioWare D.I.Y.) microgame for it, like this one:

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Muscle Spark’s Kunio-kun sampler. This newly released album published by Dangerous Mezashi Cat features 17 fanmade arrangements from Technos’s popular Kunio-kun titles — River City Ransom, Super Dodge Ball, Nintendo World Cup, and other Japan-only sequels.

You can look over Muscle Spark’s full tracklist at VGMdb.

Speaking of Kunio, whatever happened to Kunio Ultra Hot-Blooded! Big Athletic Meet, the DS “sports” game modeled after Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku: Soreyuke Dai Undoukai (Hot-Blooded Marching Anthem: Go Go! Big Athletic Meet)? I haven’t heard anything about the title since January. I guess Arc System Works quietly cancelled this 3D abomination?

“Bros Before Hoes” by 9000.

This is terribly immature, I know, but I love the idea of Billy and Jimmy deciding not to fight each other at the end of the original Double Dragon game (NES/Arcade), agreeing that Marian isn’t worth fighting over.

My cousin Anwar and I used to spend all our quarters on Double Dragon at Major Magic’s (Detroit’s janky version of Chuck E. Cheese), and I hated it when we got to the end because he always killed me to make sure Marian ran to his arms for a kiss. Total dick move!

Game Center CX Nintendo Channel special, featuring Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou. This sequel, or spinoff, or something of River City Ransom, released this week on the Japanese Virtual Console, features Kunio and gang(s) as samurai in feudal Japan.

Because of a fanmade remake of this game, it’s damned hard to find footage of the original on YouTube, which just makes me appreciate this Game Center CX clip, and Nintendaan for uploading it, even more.

3D art from a Downtown Nekketsu Kōshinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundōkai scene. Tibori Design has a blog filled with more 3D scenes from Nintendo games like Balloon Fight and Excitebike. You can see the Japanese design company’s other work, like its pieces for chiptune group YMCK, at its official site.

The 3D blog has been linked by a number of sites already, but I couldn’t resist sharing some Kunio-kun art with you. Since I hate to post stuff that you might have already seen, here’s some more Kunio-kun junk to make up for it.

I feel bad for Technos/Aksys

As magnificent as Super Dodgeball was for the NES, its Virtual Console release this week will be completely overshadowed by Mega Man 9’s arrival on WiiWare.

It must be even worse for Sega Genesis platformer Vectorman, which also hits the Shopping Channel today.
