Dark Spire for $5 at GameStop (in-store) →

New copies of The Dark Spire are now only $4.99 at GameStop and EB Games stores. $4.99!
I feel sorry for Atlus — despite its efforts to make this super hardcore game attractive by throwing in a soundtrack CD (the music is fab), there’s just no way the company attracted more than a handful of gamers with this first-person dungeon crawler.
The Dark Spire’s spartan boxart wasn’t doing the game any favors either. Look at how fast its price dropped after releasing just last April! This is why we’ll never see any of those Wizardry DS releases in the States. :o(

The Dark Spire on sale for $9.99/$8.99 Used (Gamestop in-store) →

Not a bad deal! Unfortunately, Gamestop’s online stock for this Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry-style first-person RPG is depleted, so you’ll need to find a nearby store with a copy, which you can do in the U.S. by hitting that link above and typing your zip code into the store locator.

The Dark Spire font patch →

I noticed this negligible issue in Retro Game Challenge, but it popped up again in The Dark Spire, which released last week. The typeface Atlus used for most of the first-person RPG’s text has scrunched up Ms and Ws — again, it’s a minor annoyance.
Gukid cared enough about it, though, to hack a fix that replaces the Ms, Ws, and punctuation. As usual, you’ll need a copy of The Dark Spire’s ROM to apply the patch, one that we advise you to acquire through legal methods.
It’s interesting to see someone clean up these issues, however trivial they might seem to others . Apparently, there are several other DS games wiith the same problem:
- Air Traffic Chaos
- Avalon Code
- The Dark Spire
- Retro Games Challenge
- Suikoden Tierkreis

“Our census data indicates that given the choice between only a game, and a better-packaged game with a free bonus soundtrack, a significant number of our fans seem to prefer getting free extras. We don’t want to rush to any conclusions here, but it seems possible that people enjoy free bonus things along with their games.
Hopefully, we’re actually reading the data correctly this time, unlike that study on whether or not our fans enjoyed bonus live scorpions with their games. We really blew it on that one, and we apologize to those affected.”
— Atlus PR manager Aram Jabbari, explaining the publisher’s decision to bundle upcoming first-person RPG The Dark Spire with a soundtrack CD.
I’ve mentioned several times that this game’s soundtrack is aces, but don’t take my word for it! Listen to and compare these modern and classic samples.

“Classic” version of yesterday’s The Dark Spire song.
I told you this joint would be off the chain. And here you have it, just as I described it, unchained.

I think I’m going to record an entire album of just me rapping over beats from The Dark Spire. Let’s not kid ourselves, it would be the next 808s & Heartbreak, in a good way. WORD.

Music from The Dark Spire.
This crooning dude is all over The Dark Spire’s soundtrack — it’s fantastic, as I’ve previously mentioned. I’ll post the 8-bit version of this song, which is somehow even more awesome, tomorrow. So, look forward to that.

IGN recently posted a decent hands-on preview for the Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry-style first-person RPG, if you’re starved for new information on it. The preview warns:
“It’s obvious that The Dark Spire is a game that only the most hardcore RPG fans will get into on DS, and one that doesn’t exactly have the visual charm that Etrian Odyssey has.”
While I don’t have much experience with first-person RPGs, I was a huge fan of MUDs (multi-user dungeons) in the mid-90s, and this seems like a somewhat close approximation for the DS. I’ll likely pick this up!
IGN also put up three character creation and combat videos, which we haven’t had luck with embedding here, so you can watch them at this link instead.

“Boss Music (Modern/Classic)” samples, The Dark Spire.

Coming stateside in March courtesy of Atlus, this Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry-style first-person RPG’s standout feature is its two dungeon modes: Modern Mode offers 3D environments and more detailed art, whereas Classic Mode presents the dungeons as 2D wireframes with simplified character sprites.
But more interesting to us, at least for this post, is the game’s excellent soundtrack, composed by Kenichi Arakawa. As you’ll hear in the audio snippets above, there are also Modern and Classic versions of the music.
There are no song samples at The Dark Spire’s English site yet, but the Japanese hub has previews from the region’s preorder CD, as well as an audio player that you can use to compare the Modern/Classic versions of three songs.
I hope Atlus will include a CD with The Dark Spire’s preorders in the U.S., as it has with some of its recent titles. Apparently, Success, the game’s publisher in Japan, also released a two-disc soundtrack for ¥3150 ($34). It’s unlikely we’ll ever see that brought to North America!
