Tiny Cartridge 3DS

"My Chariot" music video by The Depreciation Guild. Two opportunities to feature this Brooklyn chipgaze band this week! First, the group’s infectious cover of YMO “Kimi Ni Mune Kyun” — which I’ve listened to 20+ times the past few days — and now this slick video shot in Tokyo.

Random thought: how awesome is that black wallpaper (with matching curtains?) around the 1:25 mark?

If you definitely need more of The Depreciation Guild in your life but won’t be able to catch their tour this fall, they do make a cameo in chiptune documentary Reformat the Planet, so you should pick that up. Oh man, and guess what? We’re holding a huge contest giving away copies of the film and a lot more! Don’t you want free stuff?

The Depreciation Guild • In Her Gentle Jaws

"Kimi Ni Mune Kyun (YMO Cover)" by The Depreciation Guild, one of two region-exclusive tracks included in the Japanese release for In Her Gentle Jaws. These guys are touring Europe right now, but they’ll likely hit a city near you some time this October — I can’t wait to see them in Cincinnati!

The original “Kimi Ni Mune Kyun” music video by Yellow Magic Orchestra, by the way, is not to be missed:

The first half is pretty much what JC and I do every day, swaying our hips and snapping our fingers while dancing on top of Tiny’s face tiled across the floor. We don’t even have to type out our posts on keyboards; they just slowly fade into view as we clap our hands and stare at a video camera with dead eyes.

Crucify You - The Depreciation Guild

Crucify You

The Depreciation Guild • Spirit Youth

"Crucify You" by The Depreciation Guild. The NES hardware component of the Brooklyn chiptune/shoegaze band is even more obscured than usual in this track, likely blanketed under warm layers of distortion, but I’m throwing it on here anyway because I like the song.

This tune reminds me of another track called "Burn" from non-chip group and one of my favorite bands ever Rainer Maria. It’s good stuff; you should click that link and listen!

Oh, and The Depreciation Guild released the digital edition of its new album Spirit Youth today. You can download the entire deal on iTunes for $9.90 or on Amazon for $7.99.

"My Chariot" by The Depreciation Guild, the first single out of the 8-bit/shoegaze group’s upcoming album Spirit Youth (releasing May 18th).

This is the kind of song that seems perfect to listen to while driving home after a crazy night — maybe it was a make-out session with a girl you were absolutely not supposed to kiss? Or you’re coming back from the best fucking show you’ve been to in years (ears still ringing)? Whatever happened, this is the joint to listen to after it all.

"Dream About Me" by The Depreciation Guild.

I know they’re softspoken pretty boys, or at least the lead singer is, but I think I’ve found my new favorite chiptune group. This shouldn’t surprise you, as I’ve made no secret of my micromusic preferences — shoegaze and vocals.

That fuzzy chiptune elements are subtle, made possible by a Nintendo soundcard, according to Kanine Records, the band’s label. The Depreciation Guild will release “Dream About Me” on white 7” vinyl and via digital download.
