Theatrhythm Final Fantasy hits iPhone, iPad today

No big surprise here, the beloved 3DS rhythm game is out for iOS devices today (New Zealand shop, U.S. link incoming). Also unsurprising: in-app purchases are insane in the membrane, crazy insane, got no brain.

The app is free to download with two songs (“One Winged Angel” and “Zanarkand”), but then you’ll spend $0.99 on each song, $2.99 on each song bundle for the numbered Final Fantasy games, and $1.99 on each character. Buying all of the content will set you back around $90. Oh, and this mobile edition lacks the EMS feature that lets you play extended versions for a number of songs.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for 3DS is currently $30 at Amazon (includes around 80 songs, more available as DLC).

Some of you might have noticed that after a month of disappointing everyone, eShop was back on point this week with four new releases: Toki Tori (GBC) for Virtual Console, mobile port SpeedX 3D, hippo murdering sim Outdoors Unleashed: Africa 3D, and Escape the Virus: Shoot ‘Em Up for DSiWare.
Plus a free demo for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy! The trial was long overdue, but to make up for it, the demo has unlimited plays, which is a first for the eShop!

Theatrhythm Persona 4 illustrations by Satake. I totally missed out on Persona 4 when it released for PlayStation 2, but after hearing so many great things about it, I’m definitely picking up the PS Vita port that releases this fall.

Theatrhythm Super Mario Bros. created as a microgame in WarioWare DIY by Dragonmario2011. Here’s a Theatrhythm Hatsune Miku game he created, too!

It’s unlikely we’ll ever see either actually made, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Square Enix produced a Theatrhythm Dragon Quest (and didn’t release it in the States).

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy releases today, and while I’m sure many of you have already got your preordered copies on the way, what about your Theatrhythm coffee mug?
If you act quick, you can get one cheap at Amazon for $14.99. Various import shops also have them in stock.
And for those wondering about our thoughts on it — the game, not the mug, which I’m sure is wonderful at delivering drinks to your mouth — our own JC Fletcher played through Theatrhythm and posted his review here.

E3 trailer for Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, which releases in a month, so get in your preorder for that free stylus.

There was very little in the way of the news about 3DS games today — what with today’s conferences being devoted to Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft, and EA — and I don’t expect there will be too many tomorrow either, since Nintendo’s event will focus on Wii U. We might hear about a bigger 3DS if we’re all on our best behavior, though.

On Wednesday, however, Nintendo will host a software showcase that’s all about 3DS. Wow, the company has so much news to deliver, it needs three E3 presentations!

English Theatrhythm Final Fantasy screenshots demonstrate how character progression and skills will work for your heroes — there’s more to this 3DS title than just DJ Max Technika-style rhythm gameplay, after all.

Square Enix explains that different characters and skills will give advantages in the various stage types:

  • Characters with high Strength or Magic skills can more easily defeat monsters in battle;
  • Characters with high Agility can travel greater distances in the field with an increased chance of finding treasures.
  • Characters with high Luck have greater odds of finding rare items and can avoid taking damage more easily.
Even though they’re crammed with data, these are the most attractive menu screens I’ve seen for a 3DS game.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy’s U.S. and Japanese covers compared. Square Enix thankfully didn’t feel the need to drop Kirby-style scowls on all these cute faces, but it did throw in some enemies to indicate that the game’s not all rainbow musical notes and singing Chocobos.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy tote bags, in natural “walking” and black “monster” versions. These will be available in Japan for 1,890 yen ($23) each. So cute!

I’m so disappointed that I didn’t get to check out the US version of Theatrhythm at PAX East. I’m disappointed that I didn’t have an appointment; I’m disappointed that I didn’t have time to wait in line; I’m vaguely (not really) disappointed that the people didn’t just get out of the way of a person who clearly Really Wanted to Play Theatrhythm.
