Indies Zero head Masanobu Suzui crying at Yodobashi Camera because he can’t find a copy of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, which his studio developed for Square Enix.

The Final Fantasy rhythm game for 3DS released in Japan this week, and apparently it’s selling quite well — some even report that a few stores have sold out of their copies! That might be due to a low initial shipment, but still, I figured a lot of people would ignore this and wait for the much cheaper iOS version that seems inevitable.

[Update: In case it’s not obvious, I’m glad that wasn’t the case, and that people are supporting Indies Zero!]

“Special trailer” for Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy. This has tons of footage of all the in-game modes — which are basically just variations on tapping and swiping to on-screen icons.

Man, I want to play this. I’ve lost all interest in the Final Fantasy series, but I can still dig the music, and that simple remix of the Final Fantasy theme totally works for me.

What is the Nintendo Network? →

Someone spotted that the Japanese box for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy bears a logo previously unseen on 3DS games: an orange icon with the text “Nintendo Network.”

Speculation over what Nintendo Network could be ranges from it being a rebranding of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, to it signifying the involvement of an illuminati group conspiring to overprice games, take over the world, and cover up the assassinations of Tupac and Biggie.

3DS Tribe has an analysis that makes sense, theorizing that it’s the 3DS’s online platform with new features like the Friends List’s “Join Friend” option or paid DLC (Theatrhythm will have downloadable songs).

It seems to already be used by Mario Kart 7, as evidenced by its “Connecting To Nintendo Network” message when you sign online. The company also registered a domain for NintendoNetwork.net last October, but so far it’s only used the site to promote the 3DS photo contest in Japan.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy’s Japanese boxart. Very nice!

I’m certain Square Enix will be fighting an uphill battle trying to convince gamers to pay full price on this instead of waiting for the inevitable iOS port — not knocking the quality/content of the title, just the easy adaptability of its concept/touchscreen controls for iPhones.

That said, videos for the Japanese demo are popping up (hey, Nintendo of America, where are our eShop demos?!), and it looks tight: here’s the best demonstration video I’ve seen so far. Theatrhythm ships in Japan on February 16. No announcement for a U.S. release yet!

Three minutes of Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, the upcoming 3DS title that takes you through the Final Fantasy series in various rhythm game formats.

Siliconera notes you’ll be able to battle an adorable Sephiroth and other villains in the game’s Chaos Tower, a boss rush that pits you against “bosses like… the Black Knights from Final Fantasy II with a special ‘dark score’.”

Japan: February 16. Everywhere else: No date announced.

Three new Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy clips take you through a FFVIII ballroom dance, a FFXIII trek through various areas, and a party of heroes pulled from several different games battling a Fire elemental.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy wallpapers, featuring really cute chocobos and other characters. More sizes are available on the site: click the button on the top right (marked “new”) and then the text on the top right.

So I really liked my demo of Theatrhythm at TGS. I think the simple rhythm-based gameplay with even the merest suggestion of RPG elements is going to be right up my alley, in a way that “normal” Final Fantasy games aren’t.

In fact, I haven’t looked forward to a Final Fantasy game this much since Crystal Bearers, a game I’m sure Square Enix would rather I didn’t mention. I liked Crystal Bearers! Deal with it!

New trailer and stages for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. This is looking leagues better than the initial trailer we saw for this rhythm game, with its seemingly pushover difficulty — and it doesn’t seem as intimidating as the preview clip Famitsu posted, which has already convinced me that I lack the dexterity to play the harder modes.

I knew I could trust you, Indies Zero.

First footage of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy — the music doesn’t kick in until 00:40 for some odd reason.

I don’t think this looks as terrible as some people are making it out to be, but that’s because I’m hoping that the stages get a lot more difficult as you progress. I do wish, though, that there weren’t any diagonal inputs for this; I’m terrible with diagonals. Otherwise, I am into this.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I believe in you, Indies Zero! Even if this does look like an iOS game!

New Theatrhythm Final Fantasy screenshots and artwork (click for larger images). As others have pointed out, this rhythm-based RPG is looking a lot like DJMax Technika — which wouldn’t be a bad thing at all!

Add this to the list of upcoming DS/3DS titles that I was initially skeptical about but am beginning to get more and more excited over as new media comes out. Other titles on that list: Aliens: Infestation, Heroes of Ruin, Kirby Mass Attack, and Cave Story 3D.

Remixed Final Fantasy theme from Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, the music-based RPG coming to 3DS from Indies Zero (Retro Game Challenge, Electroplankton).

Andriasang shared some gameplay details:

“You’ll be able to select a title, from Final Fantasy 1 through Final Fantasy XIII. Each title has three stages: ‘field’, ‘battle’, and ‘event’. Each of these stages has different different gameplay systems. You can also select difficulty, making the game suitable for beginners and rhythm masters alike…

Joining the rhythm gameplay, the game has character growth and collection aspects. When you clear a stage, your character will level up, although Square Enix did not say what getting a level up means in the context of a rhythm game. The collection aspects involve collecting music and movie scenes.”

Other songs featured in the title include ”The Sunleth Waterscape” (FFXIII), ”Clash on the Big Bridge” (FFV), “One Winged Angel” (FFVII), and “At Zanarkand” (FFX).

Theatrhythm: FF is an Indies Zero joint →

The teaser site for Square Enix’s bizarre 3DS rhythm-game spinoff Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy reveals the developer of the project as Indies Zero, not Jupiter as was rumored.

While a new Final Fantasy-related game by the team behind The World Ends With You would serve to drive many fans’ current bemusement with the game into burning desire, the attachment of Indies Zero to the project does a lot more to attract me (and, I’m sure, Eric) as Indies Zero is responsible for the two Retro Game Challenge games (and, uh, Personal Trainer: Cooking and the recent DualPenSports).

The site also features a nice remix of the classic Final Fantasy theme, and the unbelievably adorable logo seen above. Now Square Enix just has to do something about the name, and I’ll be able to declare my interest in the rhythm-based RPG without shame!
