Tron Game Boy by Thretris. Tron imagery looks way better on a Game Boy than on, say, some engineer.

This was made in honor of 8 Bit Weapon’s Tron chiptune album, which you can download for free here. I’m way more excited about both of these projects than I am about the Tron Legacy movie!

White Stripes: Modded Game Boy with blue backlight, dual prosound (3.5 mm stereo jack and RCA jacks), and slick paintjob by Thretris. Gunpei Yokoi must be smiling down from heaven after seeing this.

Custom Anamanaguchi Game Boy by Thretris, the same dude that created the totally fab “Billtendo Killboy” a few months back. Can’t wait to see it in the flesh at Anamanaguchi’s next show; I wonder if Thretris is modding a NES next, since they use both?

Steampunk Game Boy by Thretris. In addition to adding extraneous gears and a necessary layer of gold paint, Thretris obviously added a line-out mod so he could use the distinctive console to make music with LSDJ. Check out some more images here! People still think steampunk stuff is neat, right? I mean, gears!

Custom GameCube by Thretris. While painted, LED’d GameCubes aren’t that uncommon, I love that Thretris hooked this one up in a studio setting, with a Game Boy Player and LSDJ, to make a sort of Game Boy sound studio out of it.

In a weird way, it makes me want to have a GameCube around, just as an object.

Custom NES consoles painted by Thretris. Personalizing an NES like this seems easy, but you’d be surprised by how often these paintjobs turn out awful, usually doomed from the start due to modders applying the wrong kind of paint or the artist’s incompetence. Thretris is a total pro, though, as you’ve seen from his Billtendo Killboy mod.

I have an old system that I’m hoping to one day customize like this — though I managed to keep its exterior a handsome gray for over a decade, I made the mistake of packing the NES in the trunk of my car when moving to a new apartment years ago, and when I pulled the console out a half hour later, its jaundiced plastic was unsightly. I’d love to see it return to tip-top condition.
