Totaka’s Song found in X-Scape. Yes, it’s that catchy melody Nintendo composer Kazumi Totaka likes to hide in every game he works on (e.g. Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Paint, etc.).

I mentioned this tune’s discovery last Friday, but Pyro873 posted this clip with instructions for finding it:

Save the fake doctor from planet Mapate — he’s wearing goofy sunglasses and has his tongue sticking out. (An obvious homage to how the song was triggered in the original “X”; I’m not sure if it will work with the real doctor)
Bring him to the main base on planet Mordarl.
Continue the conversation with your robot until he asks, “What’s that?!” You’ll hear the music change to a weird distorted tune. Let it sit for roughly 2 minutes & 45 seconds and Totaka’s song will play.

Speaking of music, from what I hear, X-Scape’s soundtrack is bangin’. In JC’s interview with Q-Games (Dylan Cuthbert) and Nintendo — in which Totaka’s involvement with the project and the song’s inclusion was revealed — Cuthbert promised, “When you hear the music and sound in X-Scape, your mind will be blown.” Blown!

And while we’re talking about music in DSiWare games, Maestro! Green Groove released on the DSi’s download platform today! This contains only a fraction of the songs included in the full European release, but it’s nice that this is finally available to buy/play in the U.S.

X-Scape is X-Returns in Japan

Keeping up its tradition of renaming all of Q-Games’ DSiWare releases for different regions (e.g. Digidrive and Intersect, Trajectile and Reflect Missile, Starship Defense and Starship Patrol), Nintendo retitled X-Scape — 3D Space Tank in Europe — as X-Returns for Japan.

It’s a title that makes sense for a couple reasons

Japan missed out on the R&B quartet of the same name that soulfully sang ’90s hit “Just Kickin’ It”
The game’s Japan-only prequel was titled X

Anyway, I’m using this non-news as a jumping off point for two other X-Scape things I want to talk about.

Totaka’s Game

I just learned, thanks to Wikipedia, that Kazumi Totaka, composer for games like Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and even Mario Paint, is the director of Wii Music.

This changes everything. What was once a cute novelty that I was a little curious about is now very important.

Wii Music owners: please begin looking for Totaka’s Song. Pause the game and leave it for 3 minutes or so. Sit still at menu screens.

With Totaka directing rather than just composing, he has even more influence over the game, which makes it even more likely to be hidden in there. And this is THE game to hide a secret song in. His quirky little jingle could be played in an infinite number of variations by bands made up of different combinations of instruments.

The song is in there. We can find it. We can achieve this.
