DS/3DS Release Dates & Sales // Tiny Cartridge Stickers For Your Games!

Umihara Kawase fanart by Ashley Davis. Just a couple of days ago, we posted a deal on the DS version of this fantastic grappling platformer, and here’s some really cute art of the main character and an enemy! Unlike the ones in the game, this giant fish isn’t CREEPY AND HORRIBLE.

So, uh, that deal we posted has since expired, unfortunately. I’d love to have been able to say “you can try this game now, because it’s totally on sale!” It’s not totally on sale. It’s $67. Still an awesome game.

Umihara Kawase DS reels in pirates

Umihara Kawase DS released in Japan last week, and while the series hasn’t ever left the country, it maintains a small following in the States, so some of you might appreciate news about the grapple-based platformer.

As mentioned before, this release includes the original Super Famicom game and its PlayStation sequel, as well as extra levels. The Umihara Kawase PSP title that shipped last year was also port of the PS1 game, but it was plagued with bugs, according to import previews.

With Suzak working on this latest release (instead of Rocket Studios, which developed the PSP title), I thought the DS game was in much better hands. Then a Tiny Cartridge reader notifed us of an awful bug: “The physics seem fine, but the fishing lure starts acting wonky after ten minutes, refusing to hold onto fish or platforms.”

The fishing line, of course, is an imperative instrument in the game — it’s how you navigate the levels and deal with the wandering enemies. Sounds like a disaster!

Three minutes with Umihara Kawase DS. This crummy footage is more than 10 months old, but I wanted to bring up the game because this is probably Suzak’s “secret” DS project that Siliconera brought up yesterday (if not this, then Genterprise’s new Wizardry).

Sega had a demo station for Umihara Kawase DS at Tokyo Game Show, and while the title failed to receive any coverage on the U.S. side, I hear it’s bangin’.  At the least, I doubt it’s as disastrous as last year’s PSP release.

This hits stores in Japan soon — next week soon even. Decorate your desktop with Umihara Kawase to remind yourself that you should import this!

Umihara Kawase DS trailer. One of our crazy readers (you know who you are) has campaigned for more coverage of this grapple-based game, a DS port of Japan-only — but still revered — PS1 release Umihara Kawase Shun Second Edition, so I hope this will make him happy.

[Update: As reader MX7 points out, the video indicates that the DS game will also include the original Umihara Kawase released for Super Famicom in 1994.]

The game is on track to hit stores in Japan late next month. Publisher Genterprise has even put up wallpapers and widgets to make sure you don’t forget its release.

While we haven’t seen much news on the game, JC and I were chit-chatting about it a few weeks ago and dug up this old trailer, which I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else:

And if you’re starving for even more media, here’s a video showing eight minutes of the game (starting at 05:14), presumably at a demo event, accompanied with hands-on impressions. So far, it doesn’t sound as terrible as last year’s Umihara Kawase Portable for PSP.

“That one has been put on permanent hold. Have I given up on it? No, but unfortunately I don’t think the PSP game going to make it to North American shores.”

Natsume’s Graham Markay, talking to Siliconera about Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, the planned US version of the ruinous PSP Umihara Kawase port. He said he hadn’t seen the DS version, suggesting that Natsume had no plans to pick that one up.

Umihara Kawase DS may not be terrible →

Importer NCSX has confirmed the existence of a DS port/remake of Umihara Kawase Shun Second Edition. According to the description provided by the retailer, the game is a new port “supervised by the original series programmer Sakai Kiyoshi”. Hopefully this is someone we can trust to make the inevitable touchscreen controls optional. Sakai is also contributing a new stage? It must be some stage if he’s only doing one.

Umihara Kawase is my favorite grappling-based game ever, and if the DS version turns out not to suck, this port of an old game will be a serious contender for my personal game of the year.
