Super Mario Bros. (VC) ambassador update

Nintendo has put out some weird updates for eShop titles lately, and many have had trouble identifying what they add to their respective games. That’s not the case with the Super Mario Bros. update for those who downloaded the NES game as part of the 3DS Ambassador program.

The obvious change, as you can see in the image above, is the new menu icon, which replaces the generic box with an NES, a TV, and a shot of the screen. It also adds save states (tap screen) and a digital manual for the game.

Nintendo hasn’t announced this week’s downloadable games yet, but early reports indicate that they will be iSpot Japan on DSiWare (200 Points), Strider on Wii Virtual Console (Genesis, 800 Points), and the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D demo on eShop (Free).

It’s also likely that Super Mario Bros. will be made available to non-Ambassadors now, making it the first NES game offered for sale on the 3DS Virtual Console in the States. There are reports, too, that Dillon’s Rolling Western releases next week in Europe — maybe we’ll get it in North America at the same time!

Game Gear games rated for 3DS →

The first two 3DS Virtual Console games from a non-Nintendo platform will likely be Shinobi and Sonic Triple Trouble. These two Game Gear games have been rated for 3DS release by the ESRB. As someone who just loves the Virtual Console in general, I’m excited to see this GDC 2011 announcement come true. Ah, I love this period in a Nintendo system’s lifespan, full of hope for new services that has yet to be dashed by the minimal fulfillment of those services.

Turbografx-16 games were supposed to come along, but it’s not clear whether that will happen because there’s no Hudson anymore. I hope it happens anyway. I’ll buy Devil’s Crush on any platform. Let my redundant game purchases be the fuel for the company’s renewal!

Punch-Out!! on 3DS VC in Japan Feb. 1 →

Japan will soon see its first NES Virtual Console game on 3DS that isn’t a former Ambassador Program release: Punch-Out!!. There, eShoppers will be able to punch Don Flamenco in his stupid face starting February 1 for 500 yen.

The only bad thing about this release is that it seems to preclude a 3D Classics remake, which seems like a natural for this game. Don Flamenco’s stupid face emerging from the screen! The dream is over.

Club Nintendo  (U.S.) updated its selection of downloadable games, which you can grab by trading in the coins you receive from registering titles you’ve purchased.

The new rewards include Kirby’s Dream Land (3DS Virtual Console), Dr. Mario Express (DSiWare), Dr. Mario Online RX (Wii), and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Wii Virtual Console), all available until January 31, when Nintendo will introduce a new set of games.

First look at an updated Virtual Console/NES game for 3DS. Nintendo is rolling out updates for the NES titles released via the 3DS Ambassador Program, starting with the original Legend of Zelda in Japan (the game also appeared as the first NES VC title in Japan’s eShop).

You’ll see here that instead of the bland, boxy icon in the menu, you get a scene of the game’s original system and a TV showing its title screen. There’s also a digital manual attached now, as well as the ability to create and load restore points (by hitting X+Y in the game), as you can in other portable Virtual Console titles.

In the U.S. eShop today, we get Mighty Switch Force, Tetris (Game Boy), Doodle Fit, Rytmik Retrobits, and Chronicles of Vampires: Origins. Um, where’s SwapNote?

[Update: SwapNote is on the eShop right now for free!]

You can buy select downloadable games with Club Nintendo points now! Well, not now exactly, as North America’s Club Nintendo site is down for maintenance, but as this screengrab shows, you can soon choose to spend your points on a handful of first-party eShop, DSiWare, Virtual Console (on Wii), and WiiWare releases.

The initial selection includes the following:

  • 3D Classics: Xevious (eShop) for 100 points
  • Super Mario Kart (VC) for 100 points
  • Fluidity (WiiWare) for 150 points
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! (DSiWare) for 150 points

The games are chosen based on Club Nintendo member feedback, and are replaced with “a new surprise selection each month”. This is an obvious idea that I always assumed Nintendo would never implement because it’s too awesome, but here it is! The only problem is now I’ll never save enough points to get a Game & Watch: Ball.

In other digital download news, Pushmo is out on the eShop today or $6.99! Grab that shiz.

Metroid 2 on eShop this week →

Metroid II: Return of Samus will be out this Thursday in both Europe and North America. That’s great news for those of you who, say, have a Metroid II cartridge, but haven’t seen it in a couple of years, and aren’t sure where your old Atomic Purple Game Boy Color is anyway.

For example.

I think it would be really interesting to go back and play Metroid II after Aliens: Infestation. They’re both inspired by the same source material (Metroid and Aliens, both to varying degrees), and they’re similar in style.

Blaster Master: Enemy Below for Game Boy Color. The Japanese version of this game, Meta Fight EX, comes out on that country’s 3DS eShop next week.

This week (in Japan), it’s Bionic Commando, another Game Boy sequel to an NES classic. I’ve played neither, and I love both NES predecessors, so I’m way interested in seeing these make their way to my 3DS.

As for eShop/DSiWare releases in North America today, we get 3D Classics: Kirby’s Adventure (!), Escape Trick: Convenience Store, and Play and Learn Chinese.

Double Dragon games coming to VC on 3DS and Wii →

Looks like Aksys is going to start supporting the 3DS Virtual Console, which is good news. The specifics of that early support — by which I mean Game Boy Double Dragon — may not be as encouraging, but it’s support nonetheless. That’ll happen in North America on October 20.

More directly exciting is the announcement that Double Dragon 2 will be released on the Wii Virtual Console at some point. Can you believe someone is still out there working on a Wii VC release? HEROIC.

Balloon Kid comes to 3DS Virtual Console -- in color →

If you’re a 3DS Ambassador, you’ve no doubt played the hell out of Balloon Fight. “If only there were more Balloon Fight in my life,” we imagine you saying dreamily. Well!

Nintendo of Japan is releasing Balloon Fight GB on Virtual Console on October 19. That’s the Game Boy Color re-release of Balloon Kid, the Game Boy sequel to Balloon Fight. It’s basically an expanded version of the “Balloon Trip” minigame, with bosses and a multiplayer mode.

This color version was only released in Japan (as was this Hello Kitty World/”secret Nintendo game” variation) , making it technically an “import” as far as NOA is concerned. I hope that doesn’t keep it from our VC.

Super Mario Land 2 hits eShop VC today

The eShop is having a great week — first it saw the free release of Four Swords Anniversary yesterday (also free on DSiWare), and now it has Game Boy classic Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for $3.99. According to an Australian OFLC rating update, the beloved Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is coming to the 3DS’s portable Virtual Console service in the West soon, too.

Also on the eShop today: 3D trailers for Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and Mario Tennis. Japan has had these since TGS, but we’re finally getting them.

Puzzler Crystal Caverns of Amon-Ra ($4.99) and action game Bugs ‘N’ Balls ($1.99) are on DSiWare now, too.

The 3DS Ambassador Program has launched in North America and Japan! Those of you who bought Nintendo 3DSes before August 11, log into the eShop now and download your 10 free NES games (and the Ambassador Certificate video, which has some rad music).

Downloading these titles is a little different than the process we described yesterday but just as complicated. Jump into the eShop’s Menu, then Settings / Other, then Your Downloads, scroll down, select the game, hit Redownload, then hit Download. You have to download the titles one-by-one, which is a bit inconvenient — then again, these are all free.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to play Balloon Fight.
