Hey, this makes your Vita look like a Game Boy! It also makes it… waterproof…

It’s $13.99 from Play-Asia, if you want to play some Spelunky in a nice bath and oh man I was joking but actually that sounds really great.

The Vita version of Dragon’s Crown is on sale at Amazon for $19.99. I loved Dragon’s Crown when it came out, and frequent tweaks, patches and updates have only made it better since then! There’s an endless tower thing now! Via @wario64.

Magical Beat on North American Vita this week ⊟

Arc System Works’ Magical Beat is a color-matching falling-block puzzle game – that asks you to drop blocks to the beat of the background music.

I played a demo of this on Japanese PSN, hoping I’d be able to get it on my US account  – and it’ll be here Tuesday! And so will the demo, which is good because I don’t know if I explained it very well.

Pre-order a PlayStation TV ⊟
It’s like a Vita that you plug into your TV, to play (some) Vita games, PlayStation Now streaming, and PS4 Remote Play (from another TV)! Weird! The base model is $100, and there’s also a Dualshock 3/Lego Movie game/HDMI cable bundle for $140 that I don’t see on Amazon yet.
The US model is black, unlike the white JP version.

Hyperdimension Neptunia PP’s meta-metaphor ⊟
The Hyperdimension Neptunia series is already based on a metaphor… sort of. It personifies consoles – and hardware and software companies – as teenage girls, each in control of a section of the land of “Gamindustri” and fighting for “shares” of the people’s attention. They represent games, but they also acknowledge the existence of games, and play games, hence the “sort of.”
Hyperdimension Neptunia Producing Perfection for PS Vita takes this a step further, adding a strange and even more self-referential layer to the story. I’m not entirely sure how intentional it was.

Neptunia PP uses the invasion of a new idol group as the plot device to get its characters singing. A mysterious singing, dancing idol group called “MOB48” moves in and gains popularity, taking “shares” away from the Neptunia crew. Suddenly, the “CPU” characters find that singing idols are better loved than video game girls.
And so, in order to win the love of their subjects back, they become singing idols themselves, summoning you to guide them through their training and early careers.
Video games begin to lose out in public consciousness to idols, and so the video games become idols. In that sense, it’s basically a retelling of the creation of Hyperdimension Neptunia.

When I think of the “moe” culture that has overtaken Japanese otaku media in recent years, I think not just of anime and light novels with preposterously long titles, but more of idols and idol groups. True, these groups have always existed in Japanese pop culture, but AKB48 et al. are part of a new generation of idols, younger than ever and presented as entirely innocent, playing to the weird fetishization of youth that exemplifies moe. Anyway, I don’t claim to be an expert on moe; my only real assertion regarding the phenomenon is that it exists and has changed the tone of a lot of nerd-focused media out of Japan.
The Neptunia series takes the history of video games, and reframes it as a moe story, by turning video game consoles into moe idols. Neptune is a Sega console, but she’s also somebody the player can accidentally walk in on while she’s showering. Then Neptunia PP takes that reframing, and turns it into a literal story about idols. It’s all a bit "Bachelorette" video.
The thing is, I’m not sure how much credit to give Compile Heart and Idea Factory. The rest of the game proves they’re able to write a self-aware story, as Neptune cheerfully refers to video game tropes, and even buys and plays video games starring herself in-game. But this is a different level of self-awareness, dealing more with the impetus behind Neptunia’s existence than about, like, haha video games.
I’m almost certainly overthinking this.

Hohokum on Vita August 12 ⊟

And PS3 and PS4. I’ve been looking forward to this one! I played a bit of Hohokum on Vita last year, and it was absolutely gorgeous. It feels really chill to fly around as a snakey kite string thing or whatever. Even though I had no idea what I was doing or what I was supposed to be doing, I still enjoyed it!

I imagine I’ll enjoy it a lot more with some context.

Tiny Roundup: Vita Slim accessories ⊟

I went looking for accessories for the new slim PS Vita, and surprisingly there aren’t that many. I mean, there are a million variations on the silicone/plastic shell, but those don’t seem that interesting or useful to me.

Of the relatively short list of remaining options, I’m highlighting the ones that seem most useful. I haven’t tried any of these!

Terraria, Mutant Mudds free on US PS+ in June, Dragon’s Crown in EU ⊟
PlayStation Plus is changing its format a bit, launching all of its monthly free games at the beginning of the month, leaving them up for the whole month, and restricting them to two per platform. Basically, two new PS+ games a month on PS3, PS4, and Vita.
So! Upcoming + games for June are Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe! I hear Terraria is cool, and I know Mudds is. If you have a subscription, you should absolutely download them! Also, you should download everything else ever, or at least “purchase” it, because why not.
Meanwhile, Europe gets Dragon’s Crown and Surge Deluxe. Dannggggggg. Get on that Dragon’s Crown.
