Sega’s Uta Kumi 575

Sega’s making a new rhythm game for Vita, due in Japan for 2014. Uta Kumi 575 is a combination music game/word puzzle game, in which players fill in blanks in the scrolling lyrics, which the on-screen Kawaiikochans then sing using Vocaloid tech.

The use of synthesized Japanese speech and Japanese fill-in-the-blank word puzzles means this is unlikely to make it out of Japan. But in Japan, Sega seems to already have its eyes on making a new franchise. There’s already a tie-in iOS app, and there’s already a selection of goods for sale!

This seems like the kind of thing that could either generate massive interest, or sit unloved in a line-free Tokyo Game Show demo booth despite being adorable and fun (Rhythm Thief, looking at you).

I wish one of these procedural song-generating games would come out over here, even in Japanese. I need to import Kuma Uta

Oh hey, Tokyo Jungle Mobile is out

If you have a PlayStation Mobile device, like a PS Vita or… man, I don’t know, probably some kind of phone (real talk: a PS Vita), you can now check out the Tokyo Jungle spinoff on the PS Store for 3 bucks.

I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but it looks exactly like the PS3 game (which was a tense action-roguelikeish-survival game) but in an isometric grid view instead of a Final Fight side view. Which is really weird!

$50 credit with Vita purchase
Coming so close to E3, the timing on this offer is super suspicious, but on the face of it this seems like a good deal. From today through June 8, if you buy a PS Vita from Amazon, you’ll get a $50 credit. Use it to get PlayStation Plus and start playing Gravity Rush and all the other free stuff! Or preorder Dragon’s Crown! Or pick up my favorite RPG ever, Persona 4 Golden! Or PSN credit for Sound Shapes! Or subscribe to monthly deliveries of some diapers or something, I don’t know.
Why is it suspicious? The cynical part of me thinks that if there’s a big discount like this before E3, Sony could announce a price drop at the show. But if it’s $50, same deal! Who knows what’s going to happen at E3 anyway.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate 2.5D Metroidvania hitting 3DS, PS Vita
Warner Bros. has two new Batman games on the way, the first being a prequel, Batman: Arkham Origins, starring Deathstroke as the primary antagonist and coming to Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. No one cares about that, though, because it’s developed by WB Montreal instead of Rocksteady (original Batman: Arkham series studio), and it’s not the second title…
Which is a 3DS/PS Vita spin-off titled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, a 2.5D Metroidvania-style game coming from Armature Studio, the development house formed by Retro/Metroid Prime veterans several years ago. Normally a portable spin-off Batman game wouldn’t excite me too much, but doesn’t the combination of all those words in the previous sentence just sound baller?
All we know about the latter game is it’s a “completely separate experience that takes place after the events of Arkham Origins," according to Game Informer. The console and portable editions release on October 25.

Dragon’s Crown screens are blowing my mind

The last few minutes have just been a stream of semi-angry IMs to Eric about how crazy great these screens look.

  • "this art my god"
  • "how is this a screenshot"
  • "THIS GAME"

This game looks better every time I see it.

Dragon’s Crown trailer

Creepy Renaissance-esque dudes! Incredibly intricate shading! Also some butts! Dragon’s Crown looks like the absolute business. I’m so glad to see Vanillaware drift all the way into arcade-style stuff.

This comes out July 25 in Japan, and I’m seriously considering importing. Don’t need much language skill to hit stuff with a sword.

Wake-up Club comes to Vita next week

Wake-up Club is a super cute Vita app that lets you set an alarm clock, then puts you in a group of 12 other random users, to compare how quickly you get up after your alarm, compared to your group. You can also send encouragement to your group to help them get up, and see who’s still sleeping.

The PSN app will be released next Tuesday for free. It’s a pretty smart way to encourage people to integrate the Vita into their daily lives…

Muramasa: The Demon Blade Vita gameplay footage. It looks pretty much exactly like the Wii game, as far as I can tell! I am okay with this!

If you want a PS Vita, jump up on this deal immediately! Starting at 3PM ET, Amazon will have the white Vita + Assassin’s Creed 3 Liberation bundle, a copy of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and a 90-day trial of PlayStation Plus (and therefore free Gravity Rush, Jet Set Radio, Uncharted, etc.) for $179.99.

Regular price for a PS Vita is STILL $250. This is the best deal until that silly MSRP changes. We should warn you that AC3: Liberation has a serious save corruption bug, but Ubisoft says a patch is on the way.

Speaking of deals, here’s a totally unrelated but still cool offer! Scribblenauts Unlimited for Wii U, which I super want to play after reading Eric’s review, is $50 ($10 off!). Oh, and don’t forget all the other Black Friday sales!

Virtue’s Last Reward watches on sale for Hurricane Sandy relief. For once, the boobytrapped watch is being used to save lives, not to end them in bloody explosions. Aksys is selling the watches (which come in three random colors) on its website for $20, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross, earmarked for Hurricane Sandy-related efforts.
I still have the t-shirt Aksys sold for Japan tsunami relief. A nice shirt and a nice gesture!

How to apply the Persona 4 Golden pre-order Vita skin. Man, what’s Atlus going to do without Aram Jabbari? Dude’s the best. Here he is putting a skin on a Vita and it’s totally fascinating.
