Amiibos! Come get’em

Wow, these look a lot more detailed than I expected! Nintendo’s first line of interactive figures will feature 12 characters, each selling for $12.99 this holiday season. Wii U games like Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Wooly World will support the figures, as will other upcoming titles — the 3DS will eventually connect with them too using an NFC accessory or the new 3DS’s built-in support.

You can preorder all of the figures right now on Amazon. We’ve also got more photos after the break. I like how the colored lines in the Amiibo logo are the same as the ones on the *new* 3DS logo.

Link, Isabelle, and more coming to Mario Kart 8 ⊟

What. Not sure if this reveal was accidental, but Nintendo UK’s official site posted listings for two upcoming downloadable content packs for Mario Kart 8.

The Zelda pack, coming this November, includes:

  • 3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link
  • 4 Vehicles (is that a Blue Falcon from F-Zero?)
  • 8 Courses (including an F-Zero stage!)

The Animal Crossing pack isn’t due until May 2015:

  • 3 Characters: Villager, Isabelle, Dry Bowser
  • 4 Vehicles
  • 8 Courses (an Animal Crossing stage, yay!)

Each pack is priced at £7.00 or the UK, or around $11.60. The listings note, “As a bonus for purchasing both packs - as a bundle or separately - you can get eight different-coloured Yoshis and eight different-coloured Shy Guys that can be used right away.”

I would be down for this female Link ⊟
Nintendo and Tecmo Koei have shared what looks like concept art for a gender-swapped version of Link, according to these photos taken of the Hyrule Warriors strategy/art book for Japan. The design looks great, even if it’s hard to tell her apart from the Dragon’s Crown Elf — then again, I guess bows, flowing cloaks/tunics, and thigh-high boots are common accoutrements when designers set out to create elves.
You can preorder the English version of the Hyrule Warriors Game Guide, which includes a 70-page art section, from Amazon here (currently discounted by 30%). Thanks to Layiko for the photo (via GoNintendo).

Super Smash Bros. Wii U bundle preorders open ⊟

The bundle comes with a Wii U copy of the game, a special edition GameCube controller, and a four-port GameCube controller adapter (Wii U console not included). It’s $99.99 for the package, which is $10 cheaper than what you’d pay for everything separately.

And here’s where you can buy everything separately:

You also have the option of finding someone to mod your 2DS/3DS with a GameCube controller adapter. Thanks to @Wario64 for the tip!

Loved these reactions to Smash's Game Boy stage ⊟

They’re all cute sketches from a Miiverse thread yesterday, when series director Masahiro Sakurai announced that the new Smash Bros. will feature a Game Boy stage. ♪Ba-ding!♪

Smash Bros. will have a Game Boy stage ⊟
So many neat things announced for the new Smash Bros. lately! So far all we’ve seen of the pea green stage is this screen, but series director Masahiro Sakurai noted:

"If you turn on the 3D effect, it really looks like there’s a Game Boy inside the screen."

This is perfect, what with the portable celebrating its 25th birthday this year. That said, I can’t believe PictoChat was featured as a Smash Bros. stage before the Game Boy.

Hyrule Warriors guide has a nice cover ⊟

Not sure if people are still doing the strategy guide thing, but if that’s your deal, you can pick up the Prima Hyrule Warriors guide with this cool wraparound cover, which is part epic battle scene, part “late-90s polyester Dragon Ball Z shirt”. In addition to gameplay strategies, the book has developer interviews and a 70-page (!) art section.

Prima’s also releasing a 288-pge guide for the new 3DS Smash Bros. game, specific to that version — preorder that here!

Yay, more Kid Icarus stuff in Smash Bros. ⊟

Our affection for Kid Icarus: Uprising's multiplayer mode is well-known, chronicled and glamorized by poets, a love story passed down from generation to generation since time immemorial. Or mentioned on this blog time-to-time during the past two years, whatever.

So, we’re pleased as punch to see one of the most fun items from Kid Icarus: Uprising's multiplayer, the Daybreak cannon that blasted away enemies with a juggernaut of a beam, introduced to the new Smash Bros.

"Look at these three radiant pieces… Yup, you guessed it! It’s another combinable item like the Dragoon — the Daybreak. This is what it looks like when all three parts are combined together. How powerful will its beam blast be? FYI, you can fire shooting items while moving backward and forward. Change direction by flicking the Control Stick or Circle Pad toward the back of the fighter.”

If Smash Bros.'s battles manage to match Uprising's fun, perhaps the bards will sing of this game's online multiplayer too.

Ganondorf’s in Hyrule Warriors ⊟

In case anyone didn’t think one of the, like, three Zelda characters I can name would be playable in Hyrule Warriors, last night’s Nintendo Direct officially revealed him. For four weeks after launch, Club Nintendo members will be able to download a costume pack for Ganondorf for free. Is one of the characters based on Tim Conway’s hilarious sports humor character Dorf? I cannot confirm this.

Costume packs for other characters, like Skyward Sword Link, will be retailer-exclusive pre-order DLC. Cool cool cool cool cool.

There are also weapons in the game that can be found later, like the Fire Rod and a dang Chain Chomp! There’s a co-op mode for two players, and an Adventure Mode that puts specific challenges on each square of a grid that looks like the Zelda NES map.

Hey, and since we all like Warriors games now, Koei Tecmo just announced Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 for 3DS and Vita!

Smash Bros’ latest assist is a Game Boy gem ⊟

The newest assist trophy — items that allow fighters to summon a video game character to help them in Smash Bros. — is Sable Prince from Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, or The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls.

"He transforms into a snake or a frog, and unloads multiple attacks on any opponent he catches. Keep attacking your foes when they’re trapped in his dust cloud."

Longtime readers will remember the title as first-party Game Boy release that never made it outside of Japan. We’ve featured it here several times in the past because it’s super charming, it shares a lot of similarities with The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and it received a fan translation a few years ago — go back and play it!

Sonic Boom boxarts ⊟

Hey, Tails, can you stop playing Minecraft and put your tablet down for a sec? We’re trying to take a photo for the 3DS game’s boxart here. And is there any way we can crop out Knuckles’ creepy mummy fingers? No? Okay, whatever.

There’s an Angry Birds bit in the new Smash Bros. ⊟

It’s in a new mode called Target Blast:

"What’s up with this bomb? This looks like the stadium for the Home-run Contest, but there’s no bat. Once you touch the bomb, it begins to count down. Give it enough damage and launch it at the right time…then once the bomb’s countdown hits zero…!!

…It goes BOOOOOM! Not only will the blast destroy targets, but it’ll also cause a chain reaction by using shattered walls and bomb blocks—all of which contributes to you getting a high score!! This is a new activity that combines the concepts of Target Smash and the Home-run Contest—it’s called Target Blast! Your final score is the total you rack up over two rounds. Of course, your Target Blast scores contribute to your Global Smash Power, too.”

Stay tuned for a Flappy Char minigame.
