Spelunker on Wii U VC

Here’s the big news everyone’s going to be talking about on Twitter today: the NES version of Spelunker is being released on Wii U Virtual Console. Not Spelunker HD, as released on the PlayStation Network, but Spelunker One.

This is truly the next generation of ways to play crazy hard platformers from 1985. And unlike some other world-changing video game news announcements, we have a firm release date and price point: May 30 for $4.99. You can also yell at it. Not to change your TV inputs or anything, but just out of rage.

Great, even Nintendo is exploiting crowdfunding now
I’m sick of hearing about big publishers taking advantage of services like Kickstarter, which is supposed to be for indies, or at least people who would have trouble raising money for their projects themselves otherwise.
And Wario is the last person I’d give money to. Hasn’t he already raked in millions from his WarioWare series? Plus he’s known for running scams, so I don’t trust this Crowdfarter site he just launched at all. His business plan sounds fishy, too — I’m not sure how he expects to make cash by asking people to tweet or like his site.
The rewards don’t even sound that great!:

At 50 KAJILLION coins, you will receive my voice as a ringtone for your too-cool-for-school phone. HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

If I help him make 50 Kajillion coins, the least I’d expect is a DRM-free copy of Game & Wario, a cameo or credit in the game, and a downloadable soundtrack. This is just straight-up greed and an abuse of his fans’ good will. It’s official, Wario now is worse than Penny Arcade.

Yakuza Direct
I was watching the US Nintendo Direct yesterday, so I missed this significant development in Nintendo Direct Gesture Semiotics over in the Japanese stream, with Satoru Iwata and Sega CCO Toshihiro Nagoshi revealing the Yakuza-themed Ring Flash Direct. GIF via HN3DS, because I tried and failed to make one of my own. :(
It’s to signify the announcement of the Yakuza 1&2 HD Collection coming to Wii U, an announcement that somehow manages to be both totally minor and totally desperate. Like, Yakuza’s a big deal in Japan, but these are old games, and even the HD versions came out on PS3 back in December…
The good news is that since Nintendo of America is also desperate for Wii U games, maybe we’ll get the collection over here! Both have been translated, after all (and Yakuza 1 fully localized with English voices).
I love the Yakuza games. Part RPG, part soap opera, part tourism, part brawler, part absolute nonsense…

2,000+ DC characters in Scribblenauts Unmasked

So Warner Bros. and 5th Cell announced this morning that they’re releasing a DC Comics-themed Scribblenauts game — featuring over 2,000 characters from the DC label — to 3DS, Wii U, and PC this fall.

The people you’d expect are in there: Superman, the Flash, 33 versions of Batman, 130 Green Lantern Corps. members, etc. I was really curious about whether anyone from DC’s Vertigo imprint would make it in the game, and I had a whole post here detailing how Scribblenauts Unmasked would handle those peeps, but I deleted it all because I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble! :oP

So, uh, enjoy this trailer after the break instead:

New Adventure Time and Regular Show 3DS games!
D3P wil put out two games based on my favorite Cartoon Network shows this fall, including a new Adventure Time release for Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows. Titled Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!, the game has players “exploring the mysteries surrounding a massive Secret Royal Dungeon deep below the Land of Ooo.” It will feature voices from the show and four-player co-op.
In Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land, which we now know is a 3DS exclusive, the game’s eponymous characters “get transported into some of their favorite video games [where] they’ll have to use their best skills and unique abilities to traverse the various challenges to escape and get back home.”
Both are under development by WayForward — that news is either awesome or disappointing, depending on your opinion of the studio’s output and the first Adventure Time DS/3DS game.
Love this art by JL Hirten, by the way!

Wii U GamePad Famicom skin

Because in this day and age, everything must have a skin that looks like an old video game system. Consoles, controllers, clothes, iPhone cases — everything. Eventually we will see a Game Boy decorated with a Game Boy decal, and modded with a tiny PC to play Game Boy games.

Datel Japan will begin selling this Famicom decal at the end of July for ¥1,980, or around $20.

Enka singer Aki Yashiro does Wii Karaoke U

Nintendo has laid bare its strategy for boosting the Wii U’s sales, with this commercial featuring Aki Yashiro singing “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” the opening theme from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Maybe having an enka singer perform an anime theme in a living room is a weird strategy to you, compared to the obvious avenues like “having an E3 press conference,” but here Nintendo shows its willingness to ignore conventional wisdom and create new paradigms.

Earthbound will be on Wii U’s Virtual Console in the West this year
itshappening.gif, guys. itshappening.gif. Nintendo of America has not only acknowledged that a game called Earthbound exists — it has decided that humans in North America and Europe should be allowed to play this game on a modern console. We did it.
Also, I love this fanart from Sakusama.

Nintendo Game Seminar returns!
Focused on the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript-based Nintendo Web Framework for Wii U, Nintendo is restarting its “Nintendo Game Seminar” program, a classroom instruction program featuring lectures by Nintendo staff, that results in the creation of new Nintendo games.
This time, in addition to classrooms in Tokyo and Osaka, Nintendo will offer online viewing of lectures to participants in more remote locations (or, I guess, in Kyoto where NCL is located!)
Past Nintendo Game Seminars have resulted in DS games that were only released through Download Play in Japan. Hopefully Nintendo’s desperate need for Wii U games will lead them to release some of the games from this seminar worldwide…

Monhun Off-TV update coming 4/15
Aw yiss. I’ve been spending every free moment training on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 3DS (which means I’m still in the tutorial) so when the update arrives allowing me to play on the Wii U GamePad, Eric and I will be able to hunt together.
That update is coming April 15, Capcom announced, at 5pm PDT. The update also allows North American and European players to hunt together, so maybe we’ll be able to find a few compatriots when we’re no longer too humilating to behold.
I do not know what I’m doing yet. I’m so bad at this you guys.
