Gaijin Games’ brainstorming session for Runner 2, its new Bit.Trip Runner follow-up! … for XBLA and PSN.
I hope you’ve got an Xbox 360 or PS3 because Bit Trip Presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien expands on the original awesome game with HD graphics, 10+ new abilities for Commander Video (and other playable characters), unlockable outfits, difficulty modes and checkpoints, and more. Hopefully Anamanaguchi will make a return on the soundtrack, too?
You can follow Runner 2’s development and see its concept art (very different style from the Bit.Trip series!) here.

Titled Astroman, it’s a 2D platformer/exploration title available for 240 MS Points on Xbox Live Indie Games:
“The greatest of space cliches has befallen our unfortunate hero—crash landed on an unknown planet, his space ship in pieces, and nothing but his space suit and a gun that doesn’t seem to have enough ammo in it.
Luckily, he can find suit upgrades scattered around enormous levels to make finding the ship pieces easier, ship pieces will expand the range of his ship to search other worlds for more parts and upgrades, and it turns out that the worlds in this system have plenty of extra ammunition lying around, because he’ll need all the ammunition he can find in order to zorch the many varieties of hostile alien life he’ll encounter along the way.”
I haven’t seen many people talking about it unfortunately, but the reviewers who’ve spent some time with Astroman have said some really great things about the release.
Also, the game’s music composer, Jeff Edward Ball, who worked on the Monkey Island 2: Special Edition soundtrack, has released Astroman’s full OST for free!

There are probably dozens of platformers with retro-style visuals and music on XBLIG already, but this one seems worth checking out for a few reasons:
You can grab the XBLIG game here and stream its soundtrack composed by Daniel Davis on Bandcamp.

“So, where do we place all these new cameras & sensors?” As interested as I am by Microsoft’s Kinect push and learning the dance moves to Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” through a video game, this easy joke cracked me up.
Never change, NeoGAF.

The good news: It’s a four-player brawler featuring Scott Pilgrim (naturally), his girlfriend Ramona Flowers, and bandmates Kim Pine and Stephen Stills as playable characters with unique movesets — names that likely don’t mean much to you unless you’ve any familiarity with Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic.
Along with standard attacks, blocks, grapples, and weapons, your characters can taunt enemies, summon mystical ninjas, and more. You can also level up to gain new abilities, and collect cash to spend in shops scattered around the game, à la River City Ransom.
The bad news: It’s releasing for PSN this August and for Xbox 360 (likely also as a downloadable game?) at a later date. Doesn’t look like there’s a DS version. Bow bow.

I mentioned this project last Wednesday at GameSetWatch, but since it’s a collaboration between my two favorite French DS developers, Pastagames (Maestro) and Arkedo Studio (Big Bang Mini), it seemed appropriate to share here.
Though it’s an Xbox Live Indie Games release (recently submitted for peer approval), it looks like the type of thing you characters would be into. Platforming! Cute music! Cats! Count me in!
[Update: It’s now out on Xbox Live Indie Games!]

Instead of taking place in feudal Japan and drawing from local mythology, this upcoming (Xbox 360?) game is set in a fairytale Holland with settings/characters from Dutch folklore. Who needs ninjas and dozens of blades when you’ve got a farmgirl and her spinning top?

“Fire Wall” by Levi “Doctor Octoroc” Buffum.
“A custom, framed, solid bead sprite depicting an RPG style battle between Nintendo’s three main mascots (Samus, Link and Mario) and a giant XBox 360 posessed by the head of Microsoft’s Bill Gates.
This scene parallels the battle with the Evil Wall in Final Fantasy 4 for SNES.”

The third-person shooter segments and uninteresting cutscenes are worrisome, but it’s still a Contrastlevanoid game, and they’ll never take that away from us. Well, unless they do. That clip with the hero hanging on a box carried by an overhead conveyor while blasting at enemies in the background — that’s the stuff.
This is the last Xbox 360 post I’ll put up here for a while, I swear! If JC were around to keep me in check, and not at E3, this never would’ve happened! Also, if Ubisoft had shown more of No More Heroes 2 at its press conference than a game logo, I probably would talk about that instead.

I don’t normally talk about XBLA titles here, but I found this 2.5D “Contrastlevanoid”* title super interesting, something that Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi could perhaps learn from. The hookshot and interaction with background enemies are particularly rad.
This seemed like a really strange project for Epic, the leading “bald space marine” game studio, but Epic is just publishing the title. Chair Entertainment (Undertow) is handling the actual development duties.
Apparently, Shadow Complex is based on Orson Scott Card’s novel Empire. I’m surprised that Empire has nothing to do with Card’s Shadow series, though I suppose it would be odd to have an action game based on Bean. Chair, however, is working on an Ender-related downloadable game titled Ender’s Game: Battle Room.
*Props to Daphaknee for inventing this term.

I would like to see Tiny Cartridge become a repository for photos of people drawing on their gaming gear with Sharpies. Why? Blame Eric for showing me that this happens. Plus, you know, we’ve gotta be famous for something.
I’ve got a silver Sharpie that would look pretty badass on one of my DS Lites, but I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler, so the world (and the DS) is safe from me.
