“Family Don-Don” by YMCK, from Taiko no Tatsujin: Do Don to 2 Daime on Wii. Not only is the song featured in the game, but it’s even got YMCK characters dancing with 8-bit versions of the anthropomorphized Taiko drums!

NES-style drum sounds would have been too much to ask for.

“A Crimson Rose and a Gin Tonic” by YMCK, from the Katamari Forever soundtrack. This is the last YMCK video for a while, but I was reminded of this last week when I was looking for new YMCK content, and I had to post it.

If my YMCK posts last week were a response to a kind of crummy (for no reason) week, let’s say this one, which combines two of my favorite things ever (Katamari and YMCK) is going to help us start this week off right. Or something.

YMCK’s theme song for the Coro Coro TV show Okashi Deka (Sweets Detective). The lyrics for this song were solicited in a contest a couple of months ago, and this is the result.

If I were a good blogger, I’d translate the lyrics for you. But it’s me, so I’m just going to feel ashamed as I present this incomprehensible song and hope the music and animation are enough to entertain.

“Kasa ga nai” (“No Umbrella”) by YMCK, from the album YMCK Songbook: Songs before 8bit.

This cover of an Inoue Yosui song adds an element of melancholy that shouldn’t work with YMCK’s bouncy Famicom pop, but oh god it so does.

“Invader Disco YMCK FC+Arcade Mix” short sample from Space Invaders Extreme 2 -Audio Element-.

Taito’s sound team Zuntata put out this CD in Japan last month featuring music from the DS game along with a few mixes from other artists. Here’s another remixed song preview from Japanese music collective Norishirocks (with Pepper Shop’s visualization of the album’s cover):

Can you believe Space Invaders Extreme 2 releases in the U.S. in less than two weeks? How did that sneak up on us? Don’t forget to buy a paddle (only available in pink)! Unless you have a DSi. In that case, yeah, forget about it.

Preorder: Space Invaders Extreme 2 ($19.99)

Adam Robezzoli’s “videogame culture shop” Attract Mode has launched, offering some amazingly awesome stuff designed by people we love. Above: “Game Girl” shirt by Harvey James, Calamity Annie buttons(!), Family Music by YMCK, and Matthew Hawkins’s rad FORT90ZINE.

Aside from the shirts and stuff, it’s going to be cool to have a shop at which I can pick up YMCK albums! Congrats to Adam for getting the shop up, and I hope to spend money there at my earliest convenience.

Slap-up Party: Arad Senki anime’s 8-bit ending, with music by Japanese chiptune sensation YMCK.

I’ve never watched Arad Senki and am tempted to try it out, but OMGN’s Alicia says it’s “really pretty terrible”, so maybe I’ll just enjoy this cute video and leave it at that.

The show is based on a Korean MMORPG from Nexon, known in the States as Dungeon Fighter Online. Apparently, it looks, plays, and sounds nothing like this 8-bit homage, which makes me very unhappy. This video has more charm than 90 percent* of the Japanese RPGs released this handheld console generation.

“The Legend of Zelda Part 1” by YMCK (PiCTOBiTS)

The first half of this track is typical “Zelda remix” fare, but at around the 3:00 mark, YMCK turns it into something magical. Seriously, they totally killed this PiCTOBiTS/PiCOPiCT remix.

By now, you should have realized that I did not exaggerate about Art Style: PiCTOBiTS’ greatness. If you’ve yet to appreciate this essential truth, then either:

  • You haven’t purchased the DSiWare game yet, or
  • You don’t have any damn sense about

I know last week was expensive for Nintendo nerds, what with Punch-Out!! and Boom Blox: Bash Party out at stores, and Majora’s Mask on VC, but if you haven’t picked up PiCTOBiTS yet, you’re really missing out! And if you’re one of those forum/blogger dudes who refuses to buy the game but loves carping on the internet about DSiWare’s selection, basically you’re a dick.

A good day for DSiWare news

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS now available on DSiWare!

The second-best DSiWare game, Art Style: PiCOPiCT (right under Art Style: Hacolife), is finally available in North America as PiCTOBiTS. It is imperative that you purchase this addictive puzzler, if nothing more than for its YMCK remixes of classic NES/Famicom songs:

Make sure to read my PiCOPiCT review, too.

Real talk: Dragon Quest Wars looks like ass.

As exciting as the idea of Fire Emblem developer Intelligent Systems teaming up with Square Enix to create a strategy game for DSiWare sounds, these screenshots make the 3D game look like total Buttsville, a town widely known for its population of butts.

Dragon Quest Wars will release in Japan this June for 500 Nintendo Points, and will allow up to four players to battle online with Dragon Quest monsters.

“Panic Racer 005” by YMCK. It’s been a not-particularly-great couple of days, and as usual, my main tactic for combating crummy days is to post a YMCK song. If this song and accompanying Wacky Racers-esque video don’t make you smile at least once, then you… don’t like YMCK and I’m sorry.

“Cette année-là” by YMCK, based on Claude Francis’s cover of the Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” from the Claude Francis tribute album Clo Clo Made in Japan.

I’m continuing with my new tradition of responding to stressful days with aggressive YMCK treatment, on behalf of a friend.
