Oh wow, Cave Story 3D’s Japanese cover is like a spillion times better than the North American box — yes, the counter we used to measure just how much more amazing it is shot up so fast, numbers started spilling out of the device and left our floor a jumble of digits.
I am pretty sure this cover is from Zanpan, the same fellow behind this fantastic Cave Story fanart we featured a couple of years ago. Now, who’s with me in pressuring NIS and Nicalis to put out a high-res image for this, so we can print it out and use it as an alternate cover?

“Bloody Sacred Ground” by Zanpan.
It’s Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya’s birthday, and I thought it’d be nice to celebrate the Cave Story creator’s continued existence with wicked fanart. Adam Saltsman, who developed the awesome Gravity Hook Flash game we featured several months back, also has a nice piece of his own posted on Nicalis’s blog to honor the occasion.
[Update: Wow, I had no idea Adam was handling the high-res art for the WiiWare remake. Awesome!]
Here’s another wonderful Cave Story illustration from Zanpan, this one titled “Barrack Hut”:
