TinyCast 24! We spent some time here discussing Level’s 5 eShop surprises and Nintendo’s free-to-play experiments, but we also go in-depth on the uncertain future of Zero Escape, and why you need to play Danganronpa. There’s also a great discussion in the second half on how the teams behind these two visual novel series riffed off each other when designing their respective titles. If you love the Zero Escape series, don’t miss this episode!

Danganronpa's tributes to Zero Escape ⊟

I’m sure I’ve said it a bunch of times already, but if you liked the Zero Escape series, definitely try Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc for PS Vita.

We talked a lot about how the two Spike Chunsoft teams that worked on these two separate series riffed off each other in the latest TinyCast episode — that’s available to download now for Club Tiny’s Elite patrons. The public download/stream for that episode goes up tomorrow morning.

Credit to 037saya, Phioris, and Mary for posting these Danganronpa and trophy screenshots. And sorry about the initial unedited spoiler image. :o(

Thoughts on how to save Zero Escape ⊟
As I’ve mentioned earlier today, we have a podcast episode coming up in which we talk a lot about Danganronpa and the future of Zero Escape, but until we put that out, you can read this great piece from TinyCast member Christian Nutt about how series director Kotaro Uchikoshi can finish this trilogy.
Uchikoshi admitted last week that he’s having difficulty getting development approved for the next Zero Escape game due to poor domestic sales for the past two releases. So Christian detailed several options Uchikoshi can pursue to make sure he completes the trilogy: stripping down production values, finding partners in the West to launch a Kickstarter (Aksys?), building more interest for the series by releasing entries to PC, and other ideas.
Many won’t like the idea, but paring the budget and production values makes sense, considering how expensive Virtue’s Last Reward likely became compared to 999, what with its 3D models and voice acting. Check out Christian’s blog post to see what I mean.

Oh no, Virtue’s Last Reward/999's future is in doubt ⊟
I just presumed that Spike Chunsoft was well into development for the third Zero Escape game, but series director Kotaro Uchikoshi says the next sequel is in jeopardy. The problem is that while the franchise has a bit of popularity in the West, it hasn’t made a profit in Japan.
"I’m so sad, but all companies exist for profit-making purposes," Uchikoshi posted on Twitter earlier today. “If the profits can’t be expected, naturally, the project isn’t approved. We were not able to present a convincing reasonable basis to the managers. … I am very sorry to all the users who are expecting Zero Escape 3. I feel ashamed of my own inadequacies.”
He added that if circumstances change — say the next project he works on turns out to be a hit, or if someone generous steps in to finance Zero Escape 3's development — the game could still happen. Though his team looked into Kickstarter, they were not convinced that they would be able to pull off a successful campaign on that platform.
Uchikoshi continued, “I believe there is still hope. Zero Escape 3 will definitely be released somehow, someday! I will continue to seek a way out in cooperation with allies. So, I would appreciate it if you could wait until then. Thank you!”

Virtue’s Last Reward finally on the 3DS eShop ⊟

I don’t know why this took so long — I believe it had a day-one PSN release for PS Vita — but you can now buy the second entry from Chunsoft’s Zero Escape series on the eShop. It’s available with nice discount, priced at $24.99 (until September 3) instead of the $39.99 it’s going for at retail.

More details on today’s handheld download releases, including the 100th 3DS Virtual Console release in North America, over on this page!

Junpei will return for the next Zero Escape game
Answering fans’ questions on Twitter, Zero Escape series director and writer Kotaro Uchikoshi disclosed that 999's hero Junpei will participate in the next nonary game. This third game is expected to delve into the mysteries of Radical-6 and Phi, too.
Also returning in the next Zero Escape release: Virtue’s Last Reward's Dio and Tenmyouji.
I’ve no idea where this rad GIF came from (maybe Omocat?), so drop in a comment if you know its origins!

There’s not much in the way of virtue in Virtue’s Last Reward. Aksys really took advantage of the “M for Mature” rating here to give us a really immature 3DS/PS Vita game! Also, Sigma is a total perv.

Virtue’s Last Reward doesn’t care about your feelings. The game sees your sad attempts to solve its puzzles, and is like “IDGAF,” and tells you what it really thinks.
I’ve been posting a lot more screenshots and photos from games, just because I’ve been really into sharing the “tiny” moments that make a particular game fun.
It’s so easy to post all the promotional media for an upcoming release, then forget about the game once it’s in stores. I would like to get away from that, and spend more time looking at the different moments people are enjoying in the games they’re currently playing. So I hope you don’t mind us putting up these silly screenshots more often.
