LA micro-gallery Capsule Corner is hosting another collection by Thymine with 30 custom cartridges (new designs plus reprints from last year’s show) and two painted Game Boys featuring her original artwork. A lot of her artwork for this round are ghosts and slimes, two of my favorite things!
From Thymine’s artist statement:
“I think my art is overall usually seen as cute, but it touches upon darker, bittersweet themes sometimes. Some of the carts are bright and silly, some sad or scary, and some that are inbetween. With this show I wanted to have fun with the carts and this idea. I also wanted to have it as a reminder that with the bad comes the good (and vice versa), & that the darkness and light need a balance of eachother and work in harmony.“
Most of them are sold already, but you can still buy a handful of Thymine’s framed Game Boy carts for $50 apiece – otherwise you can see them all online at Capsule Corner’s site or in person at The Hive Gallery and Studios. The [SELECT START: Harmony] exhibit will run there until July 10.

We’ve featured only a couple modded Game Boy Advance systems here in the past decade somehow, amidst dozens of posts for custom Game Boys. Shout-outs to Bernard Capulong for helping us fix that with this beauty!
For this mod, he installed the screen from a Backlit GBA SP onto a Game Boy Advance, then added a “Pure White aftermarket shell, bumpers, buttons, and Start/Selects, with a sterile white glass lens (better clarity and scratch resistance).” There’s a super-rare decal of his dog Louie on there, too! You can see more of Bernard’s mods on Instagram (@berndoggers).

I was staring at the Thingiverse listing for this thing for longer than I’d care to admit. “Is it the stand? Is there a case on it?”
No, this thing is a custom made portable Wii in a Switch form factor, designed by Predue, and it rules. Full instructions and 3D printer files are at Thingiverse! Maybe you’re smarter than the guy who couldn’t figure out it wasn’t a Switch, and you can make one of these.

Just earlier this week, I raved about Thymine’s moving concept for Meteor’s My Famicase Exhibition in Tokyo, and now I see the artist has a solo show dedicated to similarly sentimental designs, except this time on Game Boy carts!
Opening tonight (7PM) at Capsule Corner – the “capsule-based micro-gallery exhibit” located at Downtown LA’s Hive Gallery & Studios – Thymine’s Select Start to Continue exhibit features 20 colorful hand-painted Game Boy cartridges with custom labels for titles like Selfcare and Everything Is OK.
“Using a piece of childhood nostalgia as the medium, Thymine portrays a juxtaposition of both light and dark that everyone experiences in life as they grow beyond those formative years. Presenting a wide breadth of emotions, some lighthearted and cute yet others heavy, dark, and solemn. These themes presented in the work are all results of experiences, and interests that have made the artist who she is through out the years – present and past.“
The cartridges will be sold for $45 apiece. You can preview a couple of these touching pieces after the break (Capsule says the show will run until June 13, and all pieces will be posted online after the opening.).
Who cares that the controls are there just for decoration? This custom setup by bioecn looks great! Keep making Switch docks/arcade cabinets, everyone.
BUY Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers (Switch)
Starting August 30, Nintendo will knock down 2DSes prices in the U.S. to $99.99. That’s a big drop from its previous MSRP of $129.99 (though “Crystal” 2DSes were already $99.99), and each system includes a digital copy of Mario Kart 7! For those who’ve forgotten the budget-priced wedge portable, it’s pretty much a 3DS without the autostereoscopic 3D support or clamshell design.
We never got the Famicom-ish Red/White model that Europe enjoyed (granted, the Teal/White edition we received is still hot af), but you can always decorate the boring systems with Steven Universe drawings like Danielle did here!
BUY Nintendo 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL
Custom packaging too! Katharine Cheshire has the Squid Sisters – and other figures – up for sale on her Etsy page. You can grab this pair for $100!
The latest North American Splatfest starts at midnight eastern time! Don’t even talk to me if about marshmallows – Team Hot Dog all the way.
BUY Splatoon, Inkling amiibo
This Inkling Girl figure – customized with a trucker hat, a roller weapon, and teal paint – comes from Project Upgrade. You can see a video of the figure rotated around, more photos, and progress shots here.
Nintendo just announced that it’s upgrading the game too, adding a new online multiplayer mode called Tower Control:
“This mode will be added to Ranked Battle, which also includes Splat Zones. The objective of Tower Control is to ride a single floating tower into the enemy’s base. Both teams rush toward the tower, which is initially placed in the center of the map, and the tower will start moving automatically once a player climbs aboard.
But beware: Riding the tower will increase the chances of being splatted, as every player has his or her target on the tower. Riding the tower alone is pretty tough, encouraging randomly selected teams of players to team up to accomplish their goal. Just like in Ranked Battle and Turf War, players will be rewarded for working together as a team. Surrounding the tower and protecting the player riding the tower, using each stage’s features to gain an advantage, and supporting each other are the keys to victory.”
Tower Control will be made available starting tomorrow at 10PM ET. Nintendo will host a special Treehouse: Live stream for the mode at 6PM ET today!
BUY Splatoon
Yup, I love this. Hard not to. Cambo225 received this custom figure as a birthday present. It turns out that having friends/family/people who appreciate your existence (or at least feel obligated to buy you gifts) has its benefits!
BUY Amiibo, Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS
All customs – this isn’t an all-Toad wave hastily thrown together after Nintendo realized the character’s quite popular, somehow. Heyseusfreak’s Captain Toad custom, complete with a light-up headlamp, is up on eBay (via GoNintendo). Toadette comes from Ash3r, while Toadsworth is from SneakyAsia000.
BUY Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Toad amiibo
Wow wow wow, it’s even hotter than the the limited edition Traditional White Game Boy (Japan-only). It looks like this modded/custom system once sported a red LCD display, but @jgkry268 has since replaced it. This is almost the most beautiful Game Boy ever.
You can build one of these yourself by picking up parts at Kitsch Bent!
BUY Game Boy games
Here’s another slick custom job from French artist Oskunk. This looks too nice to actually play with! Like, you can’t even leave this in the sun or do anything to let the vibrant colors on it fade. You can see more customs from Oskunk here!
