Dragon Quest XI would like all of my money

First, the Nintendo Switch Dragon Quest XI S Loto Edition, for Japan. Okay, the Slime Joy-Cons are great, but I can resist–

oh no, the Dragon Quest Slime Controller for Nintendo Switch. It comes with a treasure chest that works as a Switch stand. And then the Slime sits on top of that when not in use. How can I live without this… (checks listing) one hundred dollar video game accessory? You know, I skipped the PS2 and PS4 controllers. I think I’m due.

It’s time to preorder Dragon Quest XI S ⊟

I know some are upset that they bought this for PlayStation 4 or PC just a few months ago, and now here comes a “Definitive Edition” with features the other editions likely won’t get. A lot of Switch owners like me, though, have been pretending those releases didn’t exist, and are thrilled that it was worth the wait for a semi-portable Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

This Switch version due this fall will have “newly added character-specific stories, the option for increased battle speed, fully orchestrated field and battle music, and the ability to switch between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals.”

Amazon has Dragon Quest XI S available to preorder for now.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age coming to the West next year ⊟

On the eve of Dragon Quest’s new mainline game releasing for the 3DS and PlayStation 4 in Japan, series creator Yuuji Horii announced that localization work (five languages, including English) for Echoes of an Elusive Age is underway with a planned Western launch for 2018.

More details will come this fall – pray for a simultaneous Switch release here!

I love you, Liquid Metal Slime New 2DS XL ⊟

The Dragon Quest special editions of DS/3DS systems are always the very best versions of each handheld, and they’re always exclusive to Japan, and they always make me kind of sad.

This one, out alongside Dragon Quest XI, is arguably the best special edition ever in the history of the whole DS line, with a custom Liquid Metal Slime casing that rises up off the surface of the system, a cool Dragon Quest pattern, and a matching theme. I love it.

The Dragon Quest XI double pack just got more appealing ⊟

I know, the PS4 and 3DS versions together in a fancy box is already near irresistible. But NCSX is offering a version with bonuses including an activity story book and a little Slime bowl, which is obviously better.

This set is exclusive to Square Enix’s Japanese store, and I don’t see the bowl for sale separately there. NCSX is buying them there and shipping them stateside, I guess. Whatever – that’s a lot of desirable items in one package. If only the game weren’t in Japanese…

Dragon Quest XI hits 3DS, PS4 in Japan this July ⊟

Check out this “Double Pack Hero’s Sword Box” that releases with the game on July 29! How do you even fit a box this unwieldy in your collection?

Square Enix put out new 3DS and PlayStation 4 trailers for the game, as well as this video mixing footage from the two versions to compare their visuals:

While the company didn’t mention a release date for its Switch version, a representative told the Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki, “Support is planned, but there is nothing to announce today. We cannot say today whether the release date is the same as or different than the PlayStation 4 and 3DS versions.” (translated by Gematsu). No news for the West yet either!

Lots of new Dragon Quest XI footage ⊟

Looking at this opening movie… 1) wow! 2) Check out those people riding dragons! Here’s a video showing both the PS4 and 3DS versions in action. I want both, and I hope there’s some way to cross-save (there totally will not be).

Check Gematsu for more details, videos, and character intros. This is happening in 2017!

We have Dragon Quest XI 3DS screenshots ⊟

Here they are. Don’t they look great? 4Gamer also has shots of the PlayStation 4 version. I am really digging the look of the 3D world and characters in the top screen, maybe even more than the throwback 16-bit bottom screen!

Dragon Quest XI coming to 3DS, PS4 & maybe NX ⊟

Square Enix unveiled the next mainline entry to the Dragon Quest series, which will have two distinct versions with the same story on 3DS and PlayStation 4 (similar to Level-5′s Ni no Kuni release). The company also said it’s bringing the game to Nintendo’s mystery NX platform, though Famitsu (which posted the 3DS shots above) reports that edition is only “under consideration.”

While Square Enix is developing the PS4 version on Unreal Engine 4 with the help of a developer named Orca, it’s working on the 3DS edition with support from Japanese studio Toylogic (Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Smash Bros. Brawl). It looks like the 3DS game will have 2D sprites on the bottom screen and a 3D world on the top – at least while walking around – but Square Enix showed battles can be played out in either 2D or 3D, as you can see here:

Square Enix intends to ship both versions of Dragon Quest XI in Japan around the series’ 30th anniversary (the original game launched on May 27, 1986). The publisher also announced that the Dragon Quest X MMORPG will release to PlayStation 4 and eventually the NX. No word on plans for the West!
