Peow’s comics are exactly for me and my stomach ⊟

Sometimes people go on wild runs making the exact art you want at that point in your life, a wonderful period when each release feels iconic and speaks to something thus-far unattended in your heart. Remember how Aaliyah followed up “If Your Girl Only Knew” with “One in a Million” and “4-Page Letter”? Or when early-2000s Adult Swim had the TV game locked up with programs like Home Movies, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop in the same evening lineup? Or indieszero’s decade-long reign when they were grinding out gem after gem with GameCenter CXs, Theathrythms, and NES Remixes?

That’s how I’m looking at comic book publisher Peow Studio lately. They caught my eye with Jane Mai’s Animal Crossing doujinshi Pond Smelt years ago, and I kept seeing them pick up intriguing books from talented artists like Valentin Seiche (Pocket Fantasy). More recently, they put out Patrick Crotty’s Black Border Flowers, a webcomic combining sports manga with Magic the Gathering  tournaments; and Jean Wei’s Heat, a “beautiful slice-of-life centered on a naked 8-foot fire demon and farm life with an old Aunt and grand-niece”. They are not playing around when it comes to keeping my attention.

And now they’ve brought out Mami, a lovely, lighthearted book from Manila-based illustrator Diigii Daguna that follows a detective’s career as he chases after a slippery and often hungry art thief. The criminal’s empty stomach keeps getting him into trouble, but it also gives Diigii a chance to introduce readers to delicious Filipino street foods with flavorful intermissions.

No lie, I had to go out and buy tocino (pork belly cured in a sweet mix) at our local asian grocery store to eat with garlic-fried rice and eggs after developing a sudden craving from Mami’s “Pinoy Breakfast” page. And the food intermission for taho, a syrupy amber-colored drink teeming with sago pearls and silken tofu, left me longing to book a trip to the Philippines to enjoy the treat again.

You can buy the 65-page book now for $13.50. Peow Studio has more comics you’ll want on the way – Jane Mai’s Painfully Embarrassing Otaku Weekend apparently includes “Pond Smelt 2”, and Valentin Seiche’s Trigger Soul graphic novel for Samurai Gunn 2 (coming to Switch next year) will have a release with the publisher. Expect posts on those, too :o)

Mario Paint their hands back ⊟

Filipino clothing brand Bench recently put up a set up billboards in Manila showing smartly dressed couples, with two of the advertisements depicting same-sex relationships. Some jerk took offense to seeing two men holding hands and vandalized the billboard by painting over that portion. :o/

People responded on social media channels by adding the couple’s hands back using apps like Line, sharing their fixed photos with the hashtag #PaintTheirHandsBack. Some of the edits are kind of clumsy, but that’s part of the charm — they’re not meant to be Photoshop masterpieces. My favorite (and the one that makes this appropriate to post here) was 8-bit Fiction’s with the Mario Paint interface, playing on the imperfections of these edits.

Contribute to Philippines typhoon aid ⊟

I feel dumb for not taking advantage of this huge platform we have at Tiny Cartridge to direct you to aiding relief efforts in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda earlier – especially since a lot of you have blood back there (and a lot of you actually live in the Philippines). Thankfully my own family in La Union is alright.

If you’d like to help out those in the Philippines recovering from the disaster, Aksys is running a special sale with cheap versions of Muramasa: Rebirth and BlazBlue goods, donating proceeds to victims of the typhoons. If you’d like to just send money directly to relief efforts, you can donate to Unicef, Oxfam, and other organizations.

Inazuma Eleven anime commercial with English dubbed clips. Oh God, those voices sound awful!

Though the announcer here sounds Australian, I think this commercial is for Cartoon Network Philippines. Perhaps the channel’s using a dub made for Western markets because it’s cheaper than recording a Tagalog version? If the Philippines receives a localization for one of the Inazuma Eleven RPG/soccer DS games before the States, I will be all kinds of agitated.

I’m unsure if anyone plans to start airing this in the U.S. (“animation” is mentioned in Level-5’s Inazuma Eleven trademark filing), but apparently it’s already available in Spain. Check out the dubbed Spanish version here; it sounds way better than the English edition, IMO.

DSi/DS Lite cases decorated with recycled candy wrappers by Ecomismo. They’re not only great for the environment, they still smell like candy , too! (They’re thoroughly cleaned before they’re attached to the pouches, of course.)

Ecomismo and non-profit group Action work at several levels to raise awareness of environmental issues and help people in the Philippines. First, they partner with and pay high school students to collect the wrappers and help clean up cities. The companies then make an effort to employ single mothers in poor areas of the country to put the cases together. A portion of the proceeds are donated to support education programs for orphanages and street children.

The DSi/DS Lite cases are available in several styles with red or black pouches, silver or more colorful wrappers, and plain or multicolored zippers. You can also buy PSP cases, pen pouches, and small clutches.

Helping orphans isn’t cheap, though, at least if you’re looking to buy a case for your handheld. The DSi/DS Lite pouches run from ¥3,675 to ¥5,040 ($41 to $56) – those orphans will be able to buy mansions in Manila if enough people buy Ecomismo’s products!

Eric’s tiny vacation

image

I just wanted to give you guys a heads-up that I’ll be out of the country for the next two weeks, vacationing in the Philippines and completely ignoring the internet.

Though I won’t be around to put up the latest DSiWare news and video game fanart, I made sure to prepare a lot of posts to go up while I’m out, so expect a bunch of Shiren junk, Golgo 13 scans, and pantsu during my absence!

Also, we have a few friends scheduled to stop by and help JC get up a some interesting items while I’m out, so you won’t have to worry about the site no longer receiving regular updates. Enjoy an Eric-less Tiny Cartridge!
